Former Green card holder now Citizen as of a few days ago.

Submitted an online form 4 months ago, received an interview date two months ago, had my interview last week.

Interview was at 8:30am Oath ceremony was at 9am Registered to vote at 9.15am Back at work at 10am!

Submitted passport application the day after.

Interview was straightforward and most of the time was double checking all the information I had previously submitted was accurate. Learning the answers to the civics test was fun.

I think there is a cliche of a stern interviewer who is looking for any excuse to say no, but this officer was kind and encouraging.

The oath ceremony was actually quite moving. I often see most displays of patriotism as some kind of pseudo mental illness but the patriotism shown by the officiant was actually rational, inclusive and inspiring.

All that to say, am lucky and pleased to have such a smooth journey to citizenship and am happy to be able to vote!

I have a friend who worked in the past five years for two tech companies that IPOd and has lots of vested stock.

She wants to buy a house in San Francisco but doesn’t want to sell her stock to make the downpayment. She plans to use a collateral-loan offered by ETrade (who manages her employee stock plans).

Don't ask, Don't get.

Everyone I know who has asked for a discount has got the discount.

After several months of the pandemic, and noticing the adjacent apartment being relisted by my landlord at a discount I emailed my landlord and asked if I could have my rent adjusted by the same discount. They said yes, if I committed to another years lease.

Saving 5% of rent, at the cost of a one year commitment didn't seem like a win, so I politely declined explaining my reasoning, and suggested we leave things as they are.

A week or so later, out of the blue by my rent got adjusted by 10%+ instead of 5% with no need to commit to stay.

Sufficed to say, if their intention was for me to stay put, it worked!

San Francisco and cities like it are not oil wells; they are collaborative social efforts that ideally involve participation from everyone involved. Paying taxes (ie paying someone else to do something for you) is great, but you always have the invitation to roll your sleeves up and participate in more ways.

Have you ever picked up trash? Or helped build a trail? Or gone to a city town hall meeting? Written to a local committee? Volunteered at the food bank?

If you’re like me and have the privilege of affording to live here, before and during COVID, this is still a lovely place to live an interesting, fulfilling and content life.

Be here, take part :)

As a Brit; I'm a capitalist with a sprinkle of socialism.

I'm disappointing none of these tech companies are acknowledging the happiness that comes from camaraderie and togetherness. (Note: I don't have a family though)

I love the company of others; and the unpredictability of what my day has in store when I venture out my front door.

Everybody working from home for me sounds like one step closer towards a blander, lonelier, disengaged, dispassionate, oppressed workforce.

Seems like a nice positive way for people to feel useful and lend a helping hand.

The headfake could be that this leads to an improvement to the health and well-being of the 250k volunteers some of whom might otherwise suffer from feelings of loneliness and helplessness

I’m having a really hard time tinkering away at my beginner electronics project in San Francisco because I keep sitting down to do it and then realise I need a new component and then having to stop, place an order on adafruit and then wait a week for it to arrive.

Online stores aren’t great when you are just in need of a $1 component. ideally you’d be able to just nip to a real store and quickly get what you need

This article is anthropomorphising a company. The journalist has no way of knowing if everyone at Skip was a nice guy.

I had to complain to the city twice about a Skip distributor’s aggressive strategy of tying their scooters in the early morning to every available bike hoop (and even trash cans) around the Twitter building.

The city has rules about how many scooters can be tied to a public bike hoop and at least one person at Skip was not nice and was ignoring that rule.
