In my user support days at the university I studied at, I remember receiving many students on the brink of crying and with a corrupt 3.5" disk in hand. They had their only copy of their thesis on this floppy and were desperate for help.

Why? With the host packaging system I get versioned packages, through host management tools I can control which packages my production, staging, and development hosts should have, and I can describe my dependencies on host libraries and software through the host system's own tools.

Together with distribution systems like apt I can also significantly ease deployment.

I can see that executing some commands over a set of hosts at the same time could be useful, but doesn't sound like a killer feature for me.

As for deploying from staging to production servers, it sounds more tidy to build proper packages to deploy in staging and test before deploying the same packages to production.

I am probably missing something about Fabric, but it seems to me it solves a problem already solved by most unix distributions.

Total number of queries for a day doesn't really matter much if your peak traffic is above a per-second usage quota. That being said, I think the quota is pretty generous.

I tried setting IntelliJ IDEA to Emacs key bindings, but I had to switch back to the default bindings. With the Emacs-like key bindings my fingers automatically expected a lot of things to work that IDEA plainly did not support (like kill ring).

My preference when I am not using Emacs is to make a clean break so my finger macros don't run wild, often unintentionally pressing key bindings that do other things than I expect.
