End stage True Capitalism™ is when you have to subscribe to a streaming service to watch as the streaming service cartel fixes their prices.
This reaction is surprising to me because the previous comments about its utility seem so obvious to me. I also grew up in the US south where this is often used as a filler word. The other use I observe is as a cushion for a statement that may be unwelcome or hurtful. Perhaps this is proprtional to the frequency of courteous little white lies and rhetoric that uses disengenuity for emphasis or comical effect.
"Honestly, mom, I've never liked your fruitcake. I just ate it to make you happy."
"That's why you're my favorite child! Do you want another piece?"
"I'd love one."
This is why I read Hacker News. Thank you.
The final rotation around the horizontal axis was brilliant.
In such situations, the golden mean is a useful lens.
If you read the article, you might rescind this prediction.
If one of these clients of yours became an engineer, doctor, or lawyer, would you want their services for yourself or your family?
It's always fun to see an interrobang in the wild.
Thanks, now I'm craving Ovaltine for the first time in 20 years.
Much has been written on dietary simple sugar. It's controversial, so I can understand why the author may have skirted the topic. I thought the bit about tooth decay in chimps was a good hint that there are probably _some_ health effects.
I think what's interesting about this article is that one common bit of advice about limiting dietary sugar is that there's a big difference in the rate of absorption of simple sugar between fruit juice and raw fruit because the fiber content of raw fruit offers a natural means of limiting the rate of simple sugar absorption. But, if we are breeding extremely sweet fruit, it's a reasonable hypothesis that if such a "natural balance" of fiber and fructose exists, perhaps it has been undermined.
True believers will leverage themselves all the way to the moon by selling gold calls so they can buy more SpaceX calls.
In the onslaught of discouraging news that is our world, this piece is downright inspirational.

Co-worker 4 is the one I want to have a beer with.
+1
Photo storage and display is definitely a top 5 reason to self host these days. Restic and backblaze make a great off site backup solution because, like the OP said, this is important stuff.
I am confident a gofundme would provide enough tokens for this work.
For me, it's the difference between taking your medicine a bit at a time on your own schedule or taking it all at once as an unwelcome surprise. Sure, setting up file system mounts or adding udev entries is easier to do once in Ubuntu than in NixOS, but I only need to do it the one time with NixOS. Thereafter, the config serves as both documentation and backup. For a hobby self hoster like me who occasionally shoots himself in the foot and has to rebuild a system, it is ideal. I don't know if it really saves me time, but I do know it saves my sanity.
I am no nix whiz, but it's the only OS I run outside of containers. Anything I can't easily get with my nix config I shove into a container, run it as a quadlet, and call it good.
Medical equipment reps often play a pretty active role in patient care. Can't get in touch with a rep to put a device into its MRI safe mode? No MRI for you. Can't get a rep in to help the surgeon with the type in hardware they were going to install? No surgery for you.
People's AICDs aren't going to start exploding, but I'm pretty confident this will hamper care for many patients.
And then that 25% is 10% of US banks' entire lending portfolio, so private credit is about 2.5% of their entire portfolio.
I thought the same.
"Dictated but not read."
This is by far the hardest anything on HN has ever made me laugh.
Came to say the same. Neither Ctrl+F by this human nor ChatGPT could find anything at all about age or identity verification. I think the title should be changed.
As the founding fathers said, "If the king comes knocking, a fight just means you're the enemy."
Honest conversation in the AI era is just sending your prompts straight to each other.
I wonder whether the original study was in GPT-5's training data. I asked it whether this was the case, and it denied it, but I have no idea whether that result is credible.
Why are studies on mice so popular on HN?
The only thing that feels better than a caffeine buzz is having my biases confirmed. Thanks, JAMA! Can I have mine with cream, sugar, and an hour of CME credit?
As a parent of a middle schooler and an elementary schooler, I don't need a formal study to answer that question. I've met my childrens' classmates. Sometimes, anecdotal evidence is sufficient.
And, I wish they were using real computers! Unfortunately, they're on tablets.
