You are going to have to cite "Many people love the suburbs" part. Most people live in the suburbs because that is the only cheap option available and that's because of zoning doesn't allow any other form of living.

And when cities do decide to upzone, they tend to centralize high density towers in one part of the city.

There are countless studies on why suburbs are just one big ponzi scheme. Strongtowns is an advocacy group that is trying to show more light into this issue.

Most of the tax revenue comes from downtowns where there are more density and more economic activity. Meanwhile a lot of the infrastructure cost are sunked into the suburbs that contribute little to the total tax revenue. The situation is even worst in California due to prop 13.

The ban on renting single family housing is just pure classism used as a way to ban people who can't afford a downpayment on a SFH to live in the same neighborhood.

This is a supply issue and thus why people should be considering joining YIMBY Action.

Cars in general are just getting bigger and more expensive to repair while our insurance liabilities are not being scaled for that.

On the flip side, I wish the fed gov't would regulate vehicle sizes such that we don't have such an arms race for bigger cars.

We really should be upping the minimal liabilities for cars. That might be the only thing that would really push our local gov't to invest in safer driving infrastructure along with alternative transit options. Vision Zero in many cities have been extremely lacking in comparison to our european counterparts.

The fact that we need tech companies to build housing on behalf of the city is a huge policy failure.

The city should have just rezoned many parts of the city a long time ago for mixed used. But instead the city and its residents has always fought against new housing. It’s only because of new RHNA mandates that they are required to zone for new housing. This is going to be a win for NIMBYs.

I hope the cities involved will rezone other areas especially in single family neighborhoods such that we can get more housing when interest rates drop. There is a lot of demand still for housing and there are policy tools that can be leveraged to encourage more housing to be built.

Bicycling infrastructure goes together well with higher housing density. When you have higher housing density where people live near their jobs, they wouldn’t be a need for high speed streets that are in conflict with sharrows.

Depending on regulations of this, I doubt they can resell. Especially if each background check is done days apart from each other. You may run into a scenario where a felony case was recorded in between background checks.

I used to work in the background screening company before switching careers. The background screening process is very tedious, each state and sometimes counties keep records in their own way. If you are lucky, you can easily just search for the person’s case online, however many times they only allow case searches over the phone. I’m wondering how Checkr handles that since it’s not an easy thing to scale. Even looking at their careers page, they are not even hiring any data entry folks to handle that.

What about the web browser, how do you get around that?

Seems like the credit and banking industry is so dependent on the credit bureaus. Is there a way we can have credit cards, loans and mortgages without the need of centralizing pii data?

How do we know that Equifax fell into this category? That this was due to negligence? I see a lot of disdain towards Equifax but yet the breach details have not been out yet.

Apache brings up a good point about having layers of security. I wonder how Equifax was storing the data. Was it just plain text files?

I think the banks and loan industry are as guilty for giving information like this out to ththe credit bureaus.

Next time you apply for a loan or open a credit card, ask them who they report this too. If it's Equifax, walk away.

Kind of worried since I had to switch careers and now I have a late start to my technology career

Yea I have been spending a little too much. It's the moving cost and weddings I have been attending that are killing my budget.

Yea rent for studios are between 2k-3k a month. And I'm near downtown with only 20 minute walk to work. I live with my brother but if it wasn't for him, I still prefer to live with other people.

Again, depends on the lifestyle that people want. I know people who want their own place, have a car, maybe even a boat. They will have to work in places that aren't NY or SF.

Make 110k, take home around 4800 month after taxes and maxed out 401k.

Rent $1600 in SF (lucky here). But I still have over $2k month after all expenses. As a single person, I consider myself fortunate.

People will complain about living expenses but they need to calculate the income - expenses plus what the area you want to live in. City living isn't always a viable option for people. Whereas some people love it.

I don't think I can find any urban city that I can live in and find myself in a situation where I can bank more than $2k a month after expenses and maxed out 401k.

SoCal was an option for me. However I hate the suburbs, hate having a car and the salaries for new grads were 50-80k where most rents were still at least $1300.

Housing is still expensive in socal with lower salaries. Anything in California is a bad deal in my opinion.

As a non-lawyer, I don't understand how this will zero out your taxes. You will get X amount and then take a X deduction, so wouldn't it look like 0 change on your taxable income on your tax returns?

What happens after death? Do you simply cease to exist? What happens to your mind and soul? I'm not a religious person but sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about this. It's such a weird feeling when you think deeply about it.

I try and not think too much about it.

I used to drink coffee occasionally but if I take a break or drink too much I get really jittery and sick. So I'm not longer drinking it. Though I might have a half cup before the gym as a boost.

As for alcohol, it's always present at work and it's hard to not drink. I can't say no to free beers ;)

The best way to see if your company is willing to give out salary information to random verifiers, is to ask HR yourself.

In most cases they would not give out that sensitive information unless they have a written consent specifically stating that you allow salary information to be given.

Both would be great but there is only a limited amount of time in a day.

The fastest way to get into the industry is doing projects. However I would take the specific approach that some other member posted here. Find local companies near your area, research their product and build a programming project that is related to their business. Then email them directly to a few key players of the company to showcase what you did.

After you get the job, you can start focusing on CS theory. There are tons of materials online for CS theory such as Coursera, Udacity and edx.
