Yeah excellent point. When presenting numbers for reading/interpretation then talking in terms of cubes with a certain side length has to be the easiest to interpret. Its important to be specific about the units and not say "5 metres cubed" because that will just lead to confusion with m^3 (already confusing to be fair!).
An alternative is using "known" points of reference like Olympic swimming pools, the Sistine Chapel etc (similar to "an area the size of Belgium"). But that risks getting absurd.

I can't see the difference. Seeing them side by side they're virtually identical except the blog author specified stashing!
How is it different from the second bullet point? Except the second bullet point is more specific in that it says what to do with uncommitted changes.
How strange that it took someone saying that for you to realise you didn't like the show! It might warrant further introspection.
I'm not sure anyone is claiming Seinfeld invented the words but he presented them in newly humorous contexts that become widely used.
Shrinkage became a word used in a comical attempt to quash rumours of small penis size as well as to describe what happens when men swim in cold water. In the time when Seinfeld was popular then the word shrinkage used in a certain way would have been understood in these contexts and wouldn't have resulted in a HN-style overly literal interpretation and the question "what shrunk?". (speaking of overly-literal interpretations I feel the need to clarify that i'm referring to people who were vaguely up to date with popular culture).
Regifting isn't a literal description of giving a gift you received to another person. After Seinfeld's use it became a humorous euphemism for cheapness and tactlessness.

I've seen this as an LPT or similar posted on Reddit. I think it helped save a life in the New Year pre-pandemic.
I'd stopped at a picnic location near a rocky Atlantic (European) coastline with my partner. It was a picturesque location but the sea was inhospitable - huge swell and waves that just looked violent. We'd sat down at a bench with a view of the sea and set out our lunch. At some point after that I noticed two people in the sea, maybe 30-50m out. They were bobbing about in the swell. Initially I was confused. It didn't look right but my mind tried to make explanations - maybe the locals just swim out there in crazy conditions? After some time it became clear that they were in trouble, I guess that's when the "drowning doesn't look like drowning" advice came to me. Luckily the beach (tiny strip of sand between cliffs) had a well-labelled sign with an emergency number that I called and managed to ask for an English speaker and described the situation.
Whilst waiting for the response one of the people in the water started trying to tow the other towards shore but made no progress. They kept disappearing behind large waves and at some point I could only pick out one of them, then I saw a pair of shoes or sandals floating then I saw the other person face down in the water, occasionally visible behind the swell. There was some dithering where a local official came to the beach to check out the report but eventually we heard helicopters and one person was rescued and the body of the other recovered.
It turned out there was a group of three tourists, two sons (teenage/early 20s) and their dad. A local had taken them to a fishing spot - a flat rock that spanned out towards the sea close to water level. A large wave had washed the dad and one of his sons out to sea. The dad died. I witnessed the other son - who hadn't been washed out to sea - being interviewed by police, as utterly distraught as i've ever seen a person, understandably.
Looking back on it I should have realised the severity of the situation sooner but perhaps without this advice I would have left it too late and neither would have made it.
It's amazing what different people take from articles. That someone would read through this page and instead of appreciating the effort and craft their response would be an absolute textbook example of tedious internet pedantry.

Is there a subset of these constrained optimisation techniques that work when the constraint bounds are unknown before evaluation time? This applies to certain physical engineering problems where, due to the complexity of the environmental system you're modelling, you don't necessarily know what combination of input parameters lead to a non-viable solution. That is, a given solution might be numerically valid but the objective function could determine it to be non-viable due to not satisfying engineering constraints (e.g. it vibrates too fast).
Switch the view so it shows reported deaths (drop down in top right). Those numbers should be more reliable comparable.
One method I use fairly frequently is to combine ipdb and importlib. You can set a breakpoint in one module, after some time intensive task, and pause there in your console. Write some code in another module - your working module - and then import it from the ipdb prompt. You can then make some changes to your working module and use importlib.reload(working_module). It will reload that module practically instantaneously and execute any top level code.
Any idea why a surround feature isn't in vanilla Vim? It seems to follow the Vim philosophy, i.e. enacted with a command that has action and movement components.

So it's not that Home Depot (i'm not sure this applies to Target) had the credit card info stolen from their servers. It's more that it was skimmed from their self-checkout machines, though by software though rather than hardware.
Mapcodes also have to be combined with some context. In most places it's just the country name, but in large countries it also requires the state (or equivalent).

This is harsh. I read the comments here before reading the article and so found the article much less narcissistic than I was expecting. Fair enough, he does toot his own horn a bit but then it sounds like he's very much justified in doing so!
Those who went in expecting an exposé of the Berlin startup scene have misinterpreted the title of the article. It's clearly a personal piece written about a personal experience.
In my experience most civil engineering organisations use spreadsheets for the majority of design calculations. Some large organisations even still insist on engineers writing out calcs by hand. For example, a calculation that determines whether or not a retaining wall is of sufficient size more often than not will be completed in excel. Ditto with the calculation that checks the weight bearing capability of a column or beam in a large building.
Bespoke tools will be bought for tasks too complex or important for excel - finite element analysis, problems involving non-linear springs etc. Some time-consuming, repetitive tasks may also be deemed worthy of more automated tools, but on the whole the engineering industry is very much in the dark ages when it comes to modern software approaches. I often wonder what you'd end up with if you introduced a team of computer scientists into a civil/structural engineering company and told them to assist with analysis. I imagine you'd get some pretty innovative approaches to concept screening/design/cost-optimising etc.
I'm of the impression that concepts only have fundamental meaning to us because we can relate them to sensory input. For example, initially a child is taught what a boat is by seeing pictures, it eventually learns that boats, cars and bicycles share common characteristics and can be grouped together as vehicles. These common characteristics are all understood and identified by seeing, hearing, touching or smelling.
It would be impossible completely describe a concept such as "horse" to a person with no knowledge of animal physiology, without recourse to pointing at a a horse or impersonating a horse noise. Resorting to analogies with other concepts - "a horse is like a cow" - doesn't work because the person has no knowledge of the other concepts. This person could be a young child or an untrained computer, and they can be taught fundamental meanings of concepts by feeding them information in the form of sights, sounds, smells etc.
I haven't thought about this very deeply but these are the thoughts that always come into my mind when this topic comes up. Concepts have no meaning without relating them to sensory input. Humans learn by connecting the two. Why can the same not be applied to computers?
It's the latter. By only displaying the domain name users are more likely to notice a scam domain name, e.g. the Halifax.co.uk case in the parent blog post.
I've witnessed exactly that kind of informal public transport system in cities in Africa. Interesting that it's taken hold in New York.
Doubtless it occurs in numerous other cities, though i'd always assumed it was a developing countries phenomenon (cue joke about Queens).
