I had read somewhere that a lot of waste(supposedly recyclable) from the US ends up in these poorer asian countries. These countries that actually don't have a lot invested in high efficient recycling systems.

Headline is misleading. A fair number of launches are pushed back due to a number of reasons and this is definitely worthwhile mentioning in the article itself. But mentioning "on second try" in the title itself is misleading as you can see in the comments where multiple people were led to believe that the first attempt was a failure instead of an abort (which isn't a failure).

We should think about investing in smoke/heat sensors that can broadcast an emergency signal that can be placed in the wilderness areas close to human habitation. Just thinking through here, we need to determine the max radius of fire that can be confidently contained by the nearest fire department (taking into consideration some metrics such as time taken to reach the spot, how prone the area is for fire, wind speed averages, number/ability of the fire safety crew). Place a pole at the edge of such radius with sensors at different height , inbuilt GPS, and ability to broadcast its status to a remote control room. The number of poles in an area can be based on the above metrics.

I understand that some wood fires that start naturally, actually are part of the natural cycle and is necessary. So remote areas could be spared, but still monitored to check its spread.

Maybe a combination of such sensors and satellite data can help catch a fire when it is still small enough to be contained.

I have worked with multiple American senior engineers who are not as technically proficient and productive as junior foreign labor. What you are saying is anecdotal.

This is true for your second point, specifically pointing out that asians hire other asians. This is true for white Americans as well. So, how is that any different?

Also, if foreign accents bother you, maybe they caught on the fact that you weren't a cultural fit for that team. Or maybe you are not a pretty good software engineer. Maybe both.

American kids drop out of school at a very high rate. The percentage who make it higher education is so less, the institutions have to look at foreign kids for their income. The kids from India and China who come here for higher education stay back and try to get a job (So that they can pay off their loans) If they get lucky, they get a H1B and stay back to earn a living. So yes, Americans don't go to tech as much as other nationalities do. Yes, there are not enough of non asian/Indian Americans who make it to the level demanded by these jobs. Lazy, yes, usually the immigrants are more driven than the resident population.

Early in my career, my then really good manager taught me to say no, Which was initially difficult for me. But, I am really thankful for that lesson. Learning to stand your ground and say no to excess work is very important if you care about a life outside work.

People from India, like me, especially have a hard time saying NO to being assigned something that, either you have no time to work on or something you don't want to work on. It's a cultural thing combined with the golden leash of H1b visas. I see a lot of my colleagues from India accepting more and more work and end up having almost no life outside of it.

I believe it sounds like desperation because of the societal constructs that make it a stigma to use this drug. Significant number, maybe. Penetration of medical services in these countries has increased quite a lot in the same time span. But, impact of this depends on the type of disease.

Significant increase in breast cancer cases for example is I believe a direct result of increased diagnosis. But, for the increase in cases of viral diseases, I believe the majority cause is due to things like more dense population, unsanitary conditions and poor infrastructure.

Diseases transmitted by mosquitos have increased tremendously in the last decade, Especially in developing nations. I am from India and we never used to hear about cases of Dengue or Chikungunya 10-15 years ago. Now its all too common. Looks like this is a similar disease, now with links to microcephaly. Dramatic increase in city populations, poor infrastructure result in increased mosquito breeding grounds These nations need to heavily invest in taking out disease carrying mosquitoes or situations like these are only going to increase.

At VMWare, I was working on ESX performance for a while, and I can say that performance is taken very seriously. Major features have been pushed back to the drawing board when the performance was not up to the mark. The handle on performance of ESX is tight.

I think it is our society which has encouraged the cuddly, cute side of these animals to be more recognized. Maybe, If we get to look at a wildlife conservation group's data, we will probably find that the cute pictures of these animals got through to a bigger audience and brought in more donations than a violent/non-cute picture. I am not saying it is wrong, but that is just how it is. This will continue to happen unless more people actually show interest and try to learn more about the wildlife around them.

You might have misread a bit. I believe the author is trying to point out that people in other countries don't think about America on a daily basis. They just go on about their lives trying to make a living. Even with the consumption of products which originated in America, people don't really care where it came from.

The number of layoffs the article mentions is worldwide numbers. Not just inside US. H1b employees are cheaper, decently trained. A lot of companies favor such employees which add to the local workforce which in turn means shipping less jobs to India and China.
