It’s more that software books ruin your brain and make you incapable of enjoying good literature. Same for existentialism which you fled into out of despair from working in and reading about software. It is a hollow and empty profession that only breaks humans or turns them into monsters. Or not. Either way you should be worried if you can’t read fiction, it means you’ve lost the ability to put yourself in someone else’s mindset.

Stan Ulam has a great book discussing his worry about the change in research environments pre-wwII vs post-WWII. Before the war, they’d sit in cafes and draw in tables and just sit and think sometimes as a group. After they would meet in offices with blackboards and no life in the room or fun with direct funding telling them exactly what to study. I think his concern will be shown to be sound.

I wonder if LLMs can help bring that kind of exploratory culture back. Because this is not an exploratory culture.

I just talk to an LLM like it’s a person who is smart, meaning I expect it to be confidently wrong now and then but I don’t have to worry about hurting its feelings. They are remarkably similar to people, though others seems to not think that so maybe it is a case of some people finding them easier to work with compared to others. I wonder what drives that. Maybe it’s the difference between a person who thinks life unfolds before then vs the person who views life as a bundle, with each day a fold making up your experience and through this stack you discern the structure which is your life, which sure seems how these things work.

The fuck are you taking about? They can’t even fill the seats with the demographic bomb hitting. Dude, populations change. Therefore they have demand and supply they meet. I don’t care for the system for other reasons but discriminatory? Get fucking real.

lol. Imagine realizing in 2025 twitter is broken trash.

If you think your feed worked before, you’re a fool and lying to yourself. Fools everywhere, as far the eye can see. Fools as CEOs. Fools as engineers. The amount of foolery in the world has reached meme levels and I love it. I love watching you turds scream and wretch. I love watching you be autistic. It puts money in my pocket and provides endless entertainment. When you know it’s not an honor society but just a lolz society it’s easy to make the big bucks on all these fools, and I love it.

lol. Twitter is trash in 2025, you fuys crack me bulp

What better way to increase the hyperreality needed to sell products then to have you in the ad! But also this is HN, so someone needs tk lecture you on “what you mean” and also remind you it’s their product you used and signed up for and signed your rights away too so it’s YOUR fault, or some such pompous condescending trash. I say, lucky you! I say, embrace the future! I say, plaster my face on adult diaper ads and sell them to me. I say, slap my face on that TRT ad from my podcast that I listen to in my lonely apartment to feel a connection to the world while I write code that “matters”. It’s a beautiful world.

If you want to see how shallow and utterly stupid anyone in tech is that has money, read this post. It is golden. I was doubled over laughing at the DOGE part. What a chud. And they say the rich know how to use capital. No, they don’t. They’re just like you and me and it’s mostly just to get their rocks off. Typical HN trash.

Feel bad for the author. This was clearly an information pump. They just wanted info from them. That’s it. Of course google lies. Of course they steal. It’s Google and it’s not 2007 anymore. Don’t trust them. Don’t engage with them. They just steal and harvest from others. They couldn’t even keep a simple chat app running. It’s a trash company filled with trash people who will talk down their nose at you while destroying the fabric of society. Pretty par for the course these days for anything tech though. I work in tech and can say we are awful, vampiric, and pretty much useless people who get off on having power over people through knowledge. If you approach most software engineers with that understanding they are much easier to deal with, but that doesn’t make them and the industry any less parasitic. I hate my career choices.

Cool. Im underwater and have zero help an open source progect and AI has been crucial in saving some of the little sanity I have left. These things rule if you just speak with them and don’t use it like a moron or regular computer. Maybe one of best coworkers I ‘ve ever had.

Gödel had great respect for their work and was considered one of only a few people at the time to have read and understood the work. He wrote an entire paper later in life explaining he wouldn’t have come to his result without Principia because it showed him a base case to work from. Him and Russell would continue to meet and discuss logic well into the 50’s.

Lame. Sounds like a bunch of douchebags that would be into Jordan Peterson or some other lame ass new age bullshit.

I don’t know. It seems like a total mess to me and everyone deeply immersed in it a broken person. Horrible science. Horrible. Look how broken the society is when everyone gets a computer. Awful. Just awful. But can’t stop what’s coming, but I also don’t have to pretend CS is coherent or interesting or even a science (it’s not).

I used to do this for a living and went on to work for a splunk partner.

This company was run like ass from an inside perspective. Made me realize how most of Splunk isn’t for making things secure, it’s to bring your insurance premiums down. I’ve certainly seen insecure setups with Splunk often and it’s a huge myth by having it you’re more secure. Doesn’t count if you run it as root and I was amazed how many major companies did exactly that.

Cured me of taking most of the security space seriously when I saw how the sausage was made. Most of its bunk and games with an insurance premiums. Literally companies would pay to just set it up then never touch it or turn off all the alerts. Didn’t matter though because by having it the insurance premiums went down. Just a money game. Very little to do with security.

I think he misrepresents Russell and also Godel in ways. I enjoyed the book when I was young and it did launch my interest in logic but reading Godel’s personal writings, he had great respect for Russell and literally wrote in a paper defending Russell that he would not have made his discovery without the Principia Mathematica, because it showed him an instance of a consistent language and then he took the further step of noticing you could do this infinitely. My recollection was Hasshelhoff thought Russell was a kind of dunce who didn’t know what he was doing. He was putting in the fucking work for others to build on, and it was incredibly hard work if you read Russell’s autobiography of that time.

Oh good, a FP post. I love watching people argue over nothing.

Here’s the actual rule, do what works and ships. Don’t posture. Don’t lament. Don’t idealize. Just solve the fucking problem with the tool and method that fits and move on.

And do not try to use this comment threat to understand FP. Too many cooks, and most of the are condescending douchebags. Go look at Wikipedia or talk with an AI about it. Don’t ask this place, it’s all just lectures and nitpicks.

All good points. Problem is, they didn’t attribute after the copy. And that’s literally all they had to do. Now they stand in violation of that license which I admit I don’t know what that means, but it probably isn’t good. I mean, how do you fuck up piggy-backing off open source? I’ve had many companies piggy back off my own project and it’s whatever, because they attribute to the original codebase. But it’s all whatever. Most these discussions are gonna end up in the trash over the next 5 years anyway as rationalistic machines spread more and more.

You are not kept in the dark. This is not 2016. If you use these companies you know good and god damn well what they are doing. Grow up and take responsibility for using them, or delete your data and get off. Zero sympathy in 2024 for people shocked by this.

Also, you don’t own your data. That idea is itself an absurdity that is already meaningless. Once that is accepted life becomes much simpler. You want stock growth and tech jobs, that’s part of the deal. I didn’t make it and I’m not responsible for it but that’s how it is.
