Could I buy another car and it cost me less a month to own, sure.

In reality, I spent about 5k on that crap bucket the last year I had it. What did I sell it for? 5k. Asset it was not.

I went carless about a year and a half ago in Los Angeles (wife still has a car) and it’s been awesome.

I had a ratty 2006 liberty. Going through my bank history and tabbing up costs for the previous years I figured if I spent $25 bucks a day on Uber I’d be saving money. (Actually I spend about $18 / day)

Things I took into account were:

- insurance

- gas

- parking tickets, garages and meters

- maintenance (something expensive broke every few months)

- Amex platinum gives a $200 credit / year for Uber

Qualitative-ish things:

- time saved not parking (some days I’d spend 45 minutes trying to find a spot in Venice)

- time saved not forgetting where my car was parked or walking a mile to it

- I do all of my emailing during my rides

- credit card points

I’ll hopefully never own a car again.

Rearranging: the punctuation helps you think about how you’re rearranging. You can’t copy/paste around in any function and expect it it work!

The records comparison to a struct is unfair. He could have patterned matched on the record instead of destructuring and accessed the attributes of the record.

Looks cool. Seems like a good alternative if you can’t use listen/notify for some reason.

I’ve used listen/notify with triggers for a while with good success. The flexibility of my apps controlling what they want to listen for instead of having that config elsewhere.

Downside to l/n is that if you aren’t listening you aren’t getting changes. Seems like the same is true if the webhook fails here since there isn’t a retry.

If you want to check out another cool alternative see Debezium[1]. It’s uses PGs logical decoding feature to stream changes. Supports protobufs and JSON output.

Edit: Godaddy isn’t straight up gouging. Seems like dictionary words are much more expensive than made up words or non-dictionary brand names.
