I think the idea is that it gives a bit of time for the companies which run automated scans of new versions to run through and detect any issues with new versions before users install them en-mass.

Why does it need millions of users to be useful to the individuals which use it? It's not a social media site, so I don't care how many other users they have as long as it's a sustainable business for them to keep providing a service to me.
As someone who lives on a residential street right by a primary school in the UK, the majority of drivers are going over 20mph even at the peak time when there are children everywhere.
While in theory human drivers should be situationally aware of the higher risks of children being around, the reality is that the majority will be in their own bubble of being late to drop their kid off and searching for the first free spot they can find.

If you lease a car the owner of the vehicle isn't the driver, but the lease company itself. Tesla was contacted to provide the drivers name (as is their legal obligation) and when they didn't they were fined.
Exactly the same is true if you own the car outright. You as the owner of the vehicle will be contacted and asked to provide the details of the person who was driving at the time.

The median range is 15p-20p (60% of the time in December) and the UK "price cap" is about 26.35p.
With a tariff like that, shifting usage outside of 4pm-7pm can lead to massive savings. With our usage from the Octopus API, I can see from OctopusCompare that in the past month my effective average unit cost would be 19.24p/kWh, and we don't do any specific load shifting.

Pretty much every electric car has charging stops built-in to the navigation. For some the quality of the data isn’t as high, but it will be there.
Many like Polestars and Renaults are built on Android Automotive (different from Android Auto) and the built-in navigation is full Google Maps with direct access to the cars battery state and control systems.

For use cases where consistency and future support is key (education and industry) you really can't beat a Raspberry Pi. Their hardware and software support is top class. The first Raspberry Pi is still supported by the latest version of their OS over a decade later and it's even still being manufactured.
For all their products they commit to long term availability. For example, the Pi 5 will be in active production until at least January 2036 (assuming the company itself exists of course).
For anyone with a fleet of these, that's an amazing commitment. It means that when a piece of hardware breaks you can buy a band new but identical piece of hardware to replace it.
For most other companies you'd need to buy a different piece of hardware. Yes, the specs would be better, but now you have a fleet with mixed hardware which _you_ need to support and maintain going forwards.

It’s hard for me to conceptualise what a million tokens actually looks like, but I don’t think there’s a way around that aside from making proving some concrete examples of inputs, outputs, and the number of tokens that actually is. I guess it would become clearer after using it a bit.
I completely get why this pricing is needed and it seems fair. There’s a major flaw in the announcement though.
I get that the pro plan has $5 of tokens and the pricing page says that a token is roughly 3-4 characters. However, it is not clear:
- Are tokens input characters, output characters, or both?
- What does a token cost? I get that the pricing page says it varies by model and is “ API list price +10%”, but nowhere does it say what these API list prices are. Am I meant to go to The OpenAI, Anthropic, and other websites to get that pricing information? Shouldn’t that be in a table on that page which each hosted model listed?

In the UK most are directly from the grid. A few like the InstaVolt charging hub in Winchester have batteries installed on site. These are filled at off peak times using cheap power so there’s less load on the grid and cheaper rates for customers.
That’s not typical currently though and I presume it’s similar elsewhere.
I kinda hope nobody tries. Their attempts at monetization have been pretty friendly and tame thus far & if something spooks them that could change.
To be fair to them they've been making a big push on adding backup support recently. Their Nabu Casa subscription has built in support for this and was a major selling point for me getting the subscription (I have Wireguard for remote access already).
At the same time they implemented first class support for their own subscription, they added the hooks for other integrations to provide the same level of backup support. Now you can easily choose to use Google Drive, S3, BackBlaze and others just as easily as Nabu Casa. In some ways it's "better" as Nabu Casa only supports a single latest backup.
From this they seem pretty friendly and not too interested in lock-in.
The major benefit of a service like Gumroad is they are the merchant of record and handle worldwide taxes for you. Stripe does not do that (yet?)

Fastmail[0] is what I use for my personal email. They support all the standards, but are also pushing things forward with standardising the JMAP protocol[1] which is much better suited to mobile clients than IMAP.
They only have email and calendaring though, no equivalent of Drive/Docs/Sheets.

The tooling for Flutter is better, but Expo brings React Native much closer.
I fend that React Native app "feel" more native because they're actually using native components, but controlled via a JS runtime. Flutter on the other hand mostly renders to a canvas and re-implements native controls (although it can also wrap native components like RN does).
This leads to there being less of an "uncanny valley" in React Native apps compared to flutter. It also means that all the little details from the system (the text selecting and editing interactions in text inputs being a major one) are idential to native apps when using React Native, because it IS the native component.
The downside to this is that you need to consider platform differences more with React Native, which is one of the things which leads to developers without mobile experience having issues with it.
As the article says, you get the most out of React Native if you're a mobile developer, or at least have someone on the team who is. You can't abstract away all the details of a mobile platform without some tradeoffs.
The popularity is now mainly based around the software support and the product lifecycle.
With a lot of other SBC (single board computers) you're lucky to get a very of the Linux Kernal which works in the first place. The likelyhood it will get upstreamed or kept up-to-date with upstream is basically zero in most cases. Raspberry Pi has great software support and the original Pi 1 has only just become end-of-life and unsupported by Raspberry Pi OS at the end of last year.
There is also clarity on when the hardware will be produced until. For the Pi 5 for example they've commited to it still being produced until at least 2036.
Those together mean that if you're using it in industrial, educational, or embeded settings then you can depend on the board lasting a good while longer than other options which might become insecure and useless before the hardware itself fails.
This is slightly less of an issue for hobbyist who are running Homelabs or personal projects on SBCs.
