Any tips or reading you would recommend about organizing the workspace to improve focus? If it makes you feel any better (I 'quit' at the start of my bioinformatics PhD), there's a high chance that their projects went smooth as butter because they were also happy-go-lucky about double-checking their results. See for example that 75% yield paper you mentioned.

Any recommendations for books/other information sources? Currently doing some backend work for a company that mainly does scraping and a lot of this seems to be based on the tribal knowledge of the resident old wise one.

Could you give an example for the 'eliminating weaknesses is more important than growing strengths' part? I think I've encountered this before - where letting an incompetent developer go would have accelerated a project much more than hiring a very competent one.
