Money is not a representation of value. It is a representation of desire. I agree that, in principle, an economy does not have to be set up as a zero sum game, and at smaller scales (many of us don't realize that 1 billion is relatively small for global scale economics), it really doesn't have to be. I agree that value can be created. But value doesn't run this economy, desire does. And sometimes desire runs totally counter to what is _actually_ valuable.

Not to mention that, especially in a fiat environment where currency is printed out of thin air, it is literally a zero-sum game by definition. When the printer winds up, the bankers win big at everyone elses expense; setting the tone for the entire market. Anecdotal success stories of hard working, honest billionaires is a nice distraction, but that's all it is.

The substantive reality of the status quo is one of unprecedented levels of extraction, and as we continue down this AI power consildation story, that will be harder and harder to deny as we go forward. If you happen to win big as an outlier, more power to you, but the article even admits to the rarity of this story implicity. 20 years. thousands of companies. 30 billionaires.

Even if every single one of those people are honest to goodness saints, that's only slightly better odds, perhaps, than winning the lottery.

Seems a bit hypocritical to write an article critical of "power-over" and then end on a note that essentially suggest giving "power over" others to the supposedly and self labeled marginalized.

Let's not forget, the truly marginalized don't have voiced to speak up themselves, in the majority of cases.

This isn't going to make anything better, except perhaps the size of your ego.

Open-source isn't the reason the world is in a dismal state, in fact it was doing a fairly good job of addressing the world's overt shift toward authoritarianism in the 20th century until folks like you, who think that there are legitimate stipulations on freedom, came along and gave the war mongers the rhetoric they need to again take our rights away completely.

Congratulations, you are officially a part of the problem, and your too smug to even care I bet.

Did you ever consider that public is horrendously misinformed on basically every "social issue" that arises, and it would literally do more good by just staying the fuck out of it?

It's just a fucking circus to prove to everyone on your Instagram how much you care. You really think people give a shit if it's true or not?

Let's take Gaza. Save the dudes who use babies as human shields. Destroy the universities if they resist! Ridiculous.

If you want a summary I can give you a really quick one. I've watched this bias, manipulative and corrosive moderating action escalate from the moment the team was created.

I was there arguing against the moderation team when it was first founded because I believe in principles of consent and civility, not compulsion and coersion, which were already starting to manifest themselves in argument for the moderation team to begin with. I was very vocal at the time, but not radical, when I lost I didn't fight it. I just consented and watched as things got worse.

I've watched a lot of people, some who were quite prolific contributors walk away, I've watched extremely well reasoned positions, including some of my own going completely ignored or silenced, and I've watched technical problems that could and should have been addressed by some of these very same people (some of which were actively being worked on previously) go completely stale.

I understand the document is "a lot of words", which I am not necessarily a big fan of either. But we have tried several times to give specific examples of corruption and been shot down, so we felt the only way to show proper cause at this point, that would be impossible to dismiss, would be to compile a much longer and more thorough narrative.

And as it states at the top, it is by no means exhaustive. Only a few months worth of activity in the 4 years or so I've been watching this trainwreck. Also, the last few days have shown us almost and equal if not moreso amount of strife.

I'm not sure if you realize that people aren't as stupid as you seem to think they are, and they are getting tired of this ridiculous rhetoric, and in this particular case, it is quite provable that you are lying.

We know the game well, pretend you are legitimate at all costs, whether you are telling the truth or not. Well guess what? That doesn't inspire anyone to do anything, and only inflates your ego.

You know what does inspire folks? Being honest, even when you don't have to be. This is about more than just the BS unsubstantiated claim that Srid is somehow a "dangerous person" as so often is dubiously suggested, this is about folks being tired of this garbage already. It is quite ironic, in my view, that the only "crime" srid is commiting is being a part of a different culture. I thought we were all about inclusivity? What happened to that?

Tell the truth, or stfu so those that do can speak, I leave it in your hands. Please and thank you.

You would have to be able to overwrite a syscall in userspace (which would be a massive security hole) or have some kinda kernel driver (but you said disk encryption doesn't work for some odd reason, otherwise that's your solution right there).

I guess, as you stated, you might be able to write a fuse application to do it, but I don't see the benefit over just an encrypted disk.

A lot of people put minimal possible effort in at the gym or other kinds of exercising.

I often see people "jogging" that are basically just walking with a bit of a skip, for example.

I believe this is correlated with diet, which most people think is just nutrition, but it's a lot more complex now. There are petrochemicals and toxins in basically everything, avoiding them is expensive and incredibly difficult and you will still inevitably be exposed. There are many of these chemicals that have been shown to have a direct correlation to slow metabolism, so it can make it seem to make everything more difficult if you are consuming large quantities of say, glyphosate.

Most people also don't realize that the bioavailability of food is important. Probiotics, enzymes, etc are usually completely dead or stripped by the time they reach your mouth after the highly processed pipeline.

Another note, there are literally thousands of micronutrients that we barely know anything, so that's also another variable. This is also just not looked at often, so you have to actually know to look to even understand their are natural compounds that may be useful, and then you have to deal with the quality control problem in the industry, and find a reliable, preferably third party tested supplier.

And also just discipline, which is harder when you don't have good nutrition, or your body is constantly processing mass amounts of toxic material. It also just requires willpower though, and applying it will build will to wade through the complex landscape of not poisoning yourself constantly. If you want to get ahead, you are gonna have to push yourself to an uncomfortable position.

Most folks would rather walk for 2 hours than do sprints for 5 minutes, even the the later has been shown to have significantly more effect on your metabolism, and requires much less time.

So in a way I agree, it's not as simple as just activity, it is moreso intentional activity at a level that is just above your comfort zone enough to make consistent progress, and hopefully you can do that without constantly consuming mass amounts of toxins that makes that whole process harder.

I quit social media in 2012, when I was 22 and often, it feels like I live in a completely different universe.

GitHub, and a few tech forums, is about the closest thing, and I guess it is basically a full social media platform at this point, but I try to keep to on topic technical discussion, and stay out of the political cesspool that seems to have infected every aspect of society at this point.

I did use git for a long time for just this purpose. I don't even remember the details now, but it worked well enough for a single machine.

The main reason I switched to Nix about 8-9 years ago to manage my configurations was the deterministic package versioning. This is mainly because I started managing a lot more machines and each machine had different versions of different software and some config options were deprecated or removed, or syntax was changed, etc etc.

This is around the same time I started to get fed up with Ansible for provisioning and Nix along with NixOS solved both problems quite nicely, enough that I haven't felt a need to change nor any regret since. If not for that, I'd probably still be using pure git.

If we make it that far, and if freedom ever returns, 100 years from now (or more) they will gloss over the atrocities of the 20th century and the main event will be how in the 21st century they actually convinced the whole world that powerful people always have the best interest of the common folk at heart and never doing anything for their own interests, the government loves you and wants to take good care of you, the media always tells the truth, and to think otherwise was a mental illness worthy of ridicule and scorn lest you repent to the gods of the internet. Then they will list off the horrendous atrocities that led to, starting with..

Well, we are in for one hell of a century

Physically healthy how? Just because she doesn't have any medical conditions or because she exercises on a regular basis.

In the latter case, recent studies have shown exercise to be even more effective than medication or therapy. As so keeping a clean diet (which is so much harder than anyone realizes with all the petro-chemicals everywhere). I feel like this used to be (if not for the mass indoctrination by the church of Big Pharma) common sense.

It's a little silly to encourage or enable such a young woman to take such a drastic step without asking critical questions and trying to address the problem, and then acting like your morally superior for supporting "her choice".

If you really gave a damn, maybe you actually encourage her toward life, but so many nowadays are so hopelessly nihilistic they would just as soon join her. Sad.

Sure, and bit for bit reproducible builds are useful in their own right, but what Nix provides is (effectively) reproducible environments.

I used to be a huge fan of Arch as well, but NixOS has significantly boosted my productivity over the last 8 years or so due to the simple fact that my system state is fully declarative and read-only.

I never have to stop what I'm doing to fix an unexpected change or broken update. Worst case I roll back and solve it later so I can continue working.

It may also be important to point out that while Nix cannot guarantee reproducibility at the bit level on its own (and no single make-style build tool could) it gives you probably the best build environment conceived to date for eliminating environmental sources of non-deterministic build behavior so you can narrow it down to specific build tools, dependencies, etc

Also worth mentioning that there is a growing contingent in the Nix community actively working on increasing the number of truly reproducible builds in nixpkgs at a steady rate.

Once content addressed derivations become stable, that will be a really nice property for independently verifying the integrity of packages

In my view at least, DevOps is more of a philosophy, whereas platform engineering is a specific, integrated approach in the spirit of that philosophy.

The former is about keeping a tight and integrated loop between development and operations.

Platform engineering is about developing a specific platform to expose to developers which should embrace that goal and offer tangible benefits to both developers and operations specialists, making it easier for them to iterate, share information and automate processes.

In reality, there is always some level of disconnect and tension between the two, but the point is to develop tooling and automation to close that gap as much as possible.

As in the xz vulnerability, many exploits rely on some sort of open listener directly to the internet.

So with that, you can go a long way by not exposing anything at all to the internet. If you want to host private services use a VPN or zt mesh like nebula.

That won't solve everything, but it's a start.
