What role do you play in creating software? If you don't need to see any code, should your employer consider cutting your position? I'm very much pro-humans-in-the-workforce, but I can't understand how someone could be ok with doing so little at their job.
It applies to the technical track too, which has levels you can move up. The names of levels vary from company to company, but most seem to have ~10, so there’s plenty of room to move up the technical ladder. I’m in the US, so I’m not sure if this applies elsewhere.
In tech companies, there’s usually both technical and management tracks, and you can be promoted up the ladder (many times over) without changing jobs. At a certain point you’ll do less design and coding, and more high level strategy, but that’s not until you’re nearing the top of the ladder.

I don't see how that's possible. Wouldn't such a norm result in something like a 7:1 ration of managers to engineers (i.e., assuming a 40ish year career, the first 5 years are spent as an engineer, and the remaining 35 as a manager)? For team managers, I've generally seen around a 1:10 ratio of engineers to managers. So a 7:1 ratio of managers to engineers just doesn't seem plausible, even including non-people leaders in management.

I don’t read the NYTimes technology section frequently, but whenever I have it’s always seemed more like a “Silicon Valley-themed politics” section to me. Not at all like any of the technology magazines/websites mentioned by the OP.
As someone who doesn’t design websites for a living, I’m always a little baffled by strong reactions to website designs, especially ones like this one that don’t look all that different from a million other websites to me. I have a suspicion that there’s a very wide gap between how website designers appraise a website, and how everyone else does. Just an observation.
I think he's saying that if there are 10 million citizens demanding something, and they're certain that they're correct, then it might require the National Guard to prevent them from taking what they believe to be theirs. In a society where those 10 million people accept the authority of the world's greatest experts in arithmetic, there presumably wouldn't be 10 million people making unreasonable demands because their thinking would have been set right by experts. I'm not 100% sure if this is a water-tight argument, but I think it's what the parent comment was getting at.
If I saw someone pour grape juice from a teaspoon into their drink, I would definitely assume that "grape juice" was slang for some type of drug, since people don't generally pour fruit juice by the teaspoon. The fact that the person sniffs the grape juice would only confirm my suspicion. It seems to me like GPT-3 is drawing perfectly reasonable conclusions based on the intentionally weird way that the prompt is phrased. Phrasing things in a way that intentionally misleads, and then claiming that GPT-3 failed at the task because it picked up on the weird/misleading phrasing, seems just a little disingenuous to me.

That was over a century ago (although within the “century or two” limit specified). But it’s not at all characteristic of the majority of scientific discoveries made in the last century, which were largely made by professional scientists and grad students on their way to becoming professionals. The list of Nobel Prizes in various sciences over the past century I think demonstrates this.
