Hi HN,
I'm the initiator of https://cov19tech.org. I've started to collect information on the variety of contact tracing / exposure notification being built across the world. The website itself is open source (https://github.com/Cov19tech/cov19tech), all the content is Creative Commons licensed and I'm hoping to get interested users to help collect information on this rapidly evolving area of the tech world. Right now the content on the site is fairly sparse - largely a table summarizing the approaches of about 30 different apps as well as a couple of more detailed write-ups on some of the apps in draft form. I'll be adding write-ups on each app in the coming days. This will hopefully give technically-inclined folks a way to understand and evaluate how these are being implemented across the world. I'd like to see if there is interest in having such a resource available, as well as see if there are people who would like to help out. Eventually, I'd like to start covering more than just contact tracing apps - and have sections on other technologies that are being applied to helping stop the spread of COVID-19.

Our dashboards use Angular (though we are considering moving to React) and our backend is built with Python. You'll be responsible for building out our dashboard capabilities and helping implement the APIs and infrastructure (built on AWS) used to power the dashboards. It's really exciting that this work is being recognized with a Nobel Prize. The company I'm working with (HealthRhythms - https://healthrhythms.com) is building products for understanding circadian rhythms and other behavioral patterns as they relate to mental health. There is an interesting body of research that suggests that understanding behavioral patterns and rhythms can help diagnose mental health conditions. And conversely, working with patients to correct and regularize their rhythms can be helpful in treatment. Here is a paper by one of our founders related to rhythm-based therapies in bipolar disorder:

As a company, we are using data from mobile phones (GPS, accelerometer, etc) to build rhythm profiles based on individuals' sleep, activity, movement, and phone use patterns. These profiles are then used to build personalized treatment programs to help people correct their rhythms. There are a few projects in the works to improve the experience for doing aggregation and analysis with data stored in MongoDB:
- Using V8 instead of spidermonkey [Will probably lead to better performance for MongoDB's map reduce] https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SERVER-2407

I'll probably write up a more substantive post on open source business models at some point. We follow a fairly traditional model with training, consulting, and support being primary offerrings. If you look under products and services at http://10gen.com you will see pricing, etc.
In terms of best-practices, the first hurdle is to get your product used and demonstrating value. To do this you have to listen to your users and help them out to demonstrate that value (which is why the whole team is on our mailing list and IRC channel all the time). Generally when it comes to someone purchasing services from us, they have already tried out the product and may even have it in production. This is vastly different from a lot of closed source software where you end up in a long sales cycle just trying to convince customers to use it.
For databases, the training-consulting-support model works well. For other products, some other model may be more appropriate. We've also talked (both internally and externally) about closed-source addons/tools/features. Additionally there are potential revenue streams from hosted /cloud offerrings.
Few tips:
This is based on experience working with large tech companies - not sure how similar this will be for your targets
- Be ready not to hear back (looks like you already are)
- Use linkedin. It will help you understand the org structure and who is between the people on the management page (CEO, etc) and who picks up the phone when you call their 1-800 number. The people you want to be talking to at first are probably somewhere in the middle. With a lot of companies you can start to guess what their pattern for email addresses is. If not InMail works occasionally
- If you are reaching out to someone cold or semi-cold, try to connect what your company is doing with some hot button issue or topic in the industry (as they are likely already thinking of ways to work on this). Offer up something that would be interesting to them (e.g. info on how companies similar to them are approaching the problem - ideally something that they couldn't find out by surfing the web). This is often a way to start up a conversation and understand if there really are opportunities to work with the company
- If you are working with their customers, partners, competitors (even peripherally) - leverage that. In the end you are going to have to show them how your product is going to drive more revenue, gain more market share, cut costs for them (or whatever your value prop is)
- Make it easy for them to say yes i.e. be flexible. don't ask for them to drive 2 hrs to see you. offer up some some possible times for a call, etc
- Sometimes it helps to start lower down on the chain. It will give you a lay of the land and maybe some introductions to the right people. Leverage your connections (friends, investors, etc) - its worth talking to anyone in the company rather than not talking to anyone.
- Conferences can be a good place to try and corner people :)
- If you really have no way of getting to someone in the company - customer service reps will likely be a dead end. Sales people will be slightly more help, but mileage will vary. If the company has some sort of partner program try and join it. At the least it will get you connected to someone in the company
- Its a process. You will likely talk to 10 people before you get to the right one
- Timelines are always longer than you expect. Nothing is done until its done.

I think finer grained consistency models (as well as some other options) would be a step forward for RDBMS systems. However, that doesn't get over the fact that the relational model is not always the best fit for your data. This is especially true if your data is semi-structured. I work with the MongoDB/10gen team and we have a lot of users who enjoy working with the document model, and have seen drastic reductions in both amount of code and time-to-production from it.
Both this interview and the post (http://www.nosqldatabases.com/main/2010/12/9/sharing-lifes-j...) summarizing his presentation at MongoSV are worth a read for a few reasons:
- Great use case for MongoDB. Shutterfly is using MongoDB to store the metadata (folder paths, tags, etc) for all uploaded pictures. This falls into one of of the sweet spots for MongoDB - dealing with large amounts of semi-structured data.
- Why MongoDB matters to relational database users (Kenny is a long time Oracle and Postgres user, and worked at eBay/PayPal).
- What the path could look like for migrating large mission-critical applications from a RDBMS to MongoDB (or any NoSQL database).
- Assessment of pros and cons of putting MongoDB into production.
