Right now it would be pretty noisy even on slow-moving games, but it’s a good start. I’ve never done graphics work professionally so take this with a grain of salt, but I’d wager that fast-moving games can probably actually get away with tricks like this even more than slow-moving ones because you can add motion blur on top of it and players will rarely have a chance to closely investigate the graphics, which allows you to take more shortcuts.

The sony cameras support a fair amount of external control, I’ve never written code for it directly but third-party apps have no issue other than the requirement that you connect to the camera as a wifi access point, which is a pain but understandable.

Because it’s an effect system, it’s not returning monads. It’s a different kind of type system with different restrictions and benefits. You could make every function implicitly pure, but that would be syntactic sugar, as opposed to Haskell where pure-as-default is a consequence of how the type system is structured.

Unless someone with more experience can chime in and add some more info, I’ll say that my understanding is that HDDs are better for archival since they last longer when not in use. Certainly the price of SDDs, while within reach for most nowadays, is still significantly higher than for HDDs. I still use HDDs for backup even though I haven’t used them for daily hard drive purposes in years.

I completely agree, and it’s also a problem that other immensely powerful languages like Ruby and C++ have but Lisp has it far worse since A) the more arcane abstraction features are more immediately accessible from day one of writing Lisp code and B) the culture of Lisp code is far more obsessed with elegance and with twee little tricks than with readability or simplicity. It’s not a necessary issue that Lisp dialects have though: Common Lisp seems to be better as far as culture goes, and Racket has both a more simplicity-focussed code culture and the tools to make the arcane and elegant abstractions easier to understand.

How much control do you have over rendering without having to discard Bevy's renderer and asset server entirely? A big problem I had with Amethyst (and, honestly, other big engines like Unity and Godot) is that you have very little ability to use custom formats that have prebaked visibility, lighting and so forth because there’s no good way to efficiently control how the renderer gets called. You can only convert your scene to their format, usually discarding useful information. I want to use BSP as the level format in my games because I’m familiar with it and it allows for modders to easily create content, but no engine with a pre-built renderer allows you to render them anywhere close to efficiently. This isn’t just being able to have custom file format loaders and render pipelines, you need to be able to have a single vertex buffer while creating a number of index buffers based on various precalculated visibility clusters, and then be able to choose the index buffer to be rendered based on the camera's location.

I self-medicated with caffeine for my ADD for years, not realising that my (pretty serious) case of the condition was absolutely not normal, and eventually realising that I needed a diagnosis at the age of 24. Even after that, I still took months to kick the habit of starting to drink caffeine, building up a tolerance, realising that it harms more than it helps overall and kicking it, then having some downer moment (a cold, a workday after little sleep) that made me crack and drink more, starting the cycle again. I’ve now just about kicked the habit, but even though I’ve regularly experimented with and always had access to plenty of harder stuff, caffeine is the only thing I’ve ever been addicted to and likely always will be.

People with racist or otherwise regressive views know that these views will (rightly) get them criticised by the majority, and so they won't couch them in those terms precisely, but it's often very clear when you take context into account. I can't speak for this exact case, because we don't know what his exact words were, but it's telling that even your defence of him describes him criticising protesters at a time when protesters are being shot and having chemical weapons used on them by the police, a state militia who can kill pretty much anyone without threat of consequence. If your stance in this case is to support that militia, their murders and their use of chemical weapons, then I think that it's not remotely unfair to say that you not only do not support the black lives matter movement, but that you support the continuation of black people in the states being murdered without recompense.

When you have such a significant power over someone's higher education and therefore their life earnings, I don't think it's unfair to scrutinise these people's views further than had they little structural power.

Genuine question - I hang around in some pretty seriously left-wing, often social-justice-obsessed circles and I've never heard anyone complain about the term black market, or want to pretend that slavery doesn't go on in the middle east. Have you got examples of this kind of thing being commonplace? I have heard people complain that people complain about these things, but never first-hand experienced people's complaints about language beyond stuff that seems pretty benign like "don't use ableist or racist slurs". I would say that I'd be the most likely to see stuff like this - I spend a lot of time online, mostly in leftist and social justice circles, and most of my friend group in the real world aren't too different. I think that the idea that free speech is under attack is entirely a fabrication, and the idea that people get "offended" at this stuff is no more real. The term "triggered", which is so often used by the right to refer to people offended over nothing, is a term specifically referring to people with PTSD or trauma. You'd understand that they might want to be careful with subjects that might "trigger" them - i.e. set off episodes of PTSD - and when people give content or trigger warnings that's what they're talking about. No-one who liberals and the right might call a SJW cares about "offensive" content, and if anything leftist and social justice circles LOVE offensive content, they just hate when people openly and deliberately punch down. It is definitely true that leftists will criticise use of language, but when they do it's often that there's a good reason that is deliberately ignored by those who rail against this criticism (see use of "retard" or "spastic", or the fact that "aspergers" is named after a nazi who wanted to commit genocide on those with autism) but this idea that it's arbitrary or that everything is offensive isn't borne out by reality.

I know the Rust Evangelism Strike Force is a meme, but Rust genuinely has a good solution to language rot with its "edition" concept, where the language can be updated and the compiler just converts all code to a mutually-interoperable internal representation. It’s not dissimilar to using something like Babel for JS, except that because this internal representation is extremely simple, it’s far easier for the language to change more, add restrictions, remove restrictions, and so forth, while still being interoperable. Sadly, Rust has no good equivalent when it comes to libraries, and it’s not unheard of to have two libraries that should be interoperable fail to compile because there’s no way to find a single version of a shared library that satisfies both of their version constraints, even though the actual types in question are identical. I’m not sure if the error messages still look like this, but they used to say something like `expected foo::Bar, got foo::Bar`.
