Without seeing actual power flow modeling for the lines attached to these data centers no one on the planet can accurately weigh the expense of these customers.

You can't 8760 where and when overloads happen elsewhere, unplanned downtime can't be identified in (or out of) the ISO, you can't forcast demand, you can't plan pre-purchasing of power before it's on demand. You can't speculate on if reconductoring could save money, or remove overloads.

You want to look at rate increases as the core driver. So much so you dump it on replies to others comments. Too many variables are opaque for me to have a discussion about what is the 'largest' factor when each item on the above list could represent 10 million to 8 billion+ in cost.

But I can tell you I won't be convinced that new large loads, and who approved them are not a contributing factor because no one has "proven" it in real time. That's the kind of logical falacy that results in dismissal of real issues.

If you want to pretend the only source of information on this subject is the linked article I'm sure you can find many users here to debate within your arbitrary parameters.

Same goes for proof, which I'm sure would exclude power flow models if they were available for said debate.

Agreed, this is a difficult topic to simplify. "The grid can handle it" is almost always a * statement.

Can it handle it today? What about next year with the approved interconnects? What about in 2030? Does "handle it" include summer load or just average, what if temps are 5 degrees hotter than power models ran? What if PJM can't solve it's high priority overloads this year?

People want to talk about the grid as a binary system vs what it really is.

If serving those 37 customers forces choices that increase risk or cost for real customers (citizens, critical infrastructure like hospitals), it's a bad deal.

It seems like power utilities are optimized to solve problems, and serving these 37 customers can be framed as a solvable problem more easily than "Keeping the grid affordable and reliable" can.

Obviously there are not easy solutions here. Has Mullvad considered offering to buy out Daniel's shares?

The mission statement that Mullvad has promised it's users does (did) come with a duty of care.

In my eyes that mission statement is compromised, it either dies here and Mullvad is just another product financing political parties by proxy, or something is done.

I hope you find a way to protect Mullvad from actions that are counter to your mission statements.

What pcie version are you running? Normally I would not mention one of these, but you have already invested in all the cards, and it could free up some space if any of your lanes being used now are 3.0.

If you can afford the 16 (pcie 3) lanes, you could get a PLX ("PCIe Gen3 PLX Packet switch X16 - x8x8x8x8" on ebay for like $300) and get 4 of your cards up to x8.

I think that was always Alan Moore's intent. The feelings you just listed resonated with the comics audience as it came out decades ago.

That value (of one company) is from speculative investment. I don't think it negates that the field has a perception problem.

After seeing something like blockchain run completely afoul/used for the wrong things and embraced by the public for it, I at least agree that AI has a value perception problem.

I do think Facebook and Instagram are forced on the public if they want to fully interact with their peers.

I just don't participate in discussions about Facebook marketplace links friends share, or Instagram reels my D&D groups post.

So in a sense I agree with you, forcing AI into products is similar to forcing advertising into products.

I believe Berkshire bought (or agreed to buy) part of dominion (a public utility delivering power) on the east coast, I don't know any particulars of how it was run or if the deal even closed. Thats the only related example I know of (non exhaustive).

This is a really cool project. Your post is the first time I am seeing the figures on how much others also hate CGM notifications.

I have been working on software for the G1 headset to display glucose data without any audible alarms, just a visual notification.

The issues I run into are:

* Dexcom sensors have limited Bluetooth connections (with pump support), so I need to pull data from a phone.

* Battery life (I can get 9 hours maybe with a not always on display, a far cry from 6 days).

* xDrip gets readings slower than directly from dexcom.

* General UI edge cases for missed readings.

It seems like a valid metric to pick on. Premium devices are refreshed early/short cycle their lifespans because they are purchased by customers with disposable income. Budget devices should be sold to last as that's what's important to the customers buying them.

As a counter though, I would say with 2gb of ram this device just won't be fast enough for most of its users in 3 years anyway; so although I find this a valid argument to make, a new issue pops up immediately (for me at least).

I think the expectation in 2024 should simply be 0 day exploits are available for purchase that target both platforms, neither is secure.

I do not want to stop this bill; I want it revised. If that is not understood, then I suspect my primary goal for safer, less biased models is at odds with your primary goal of unregulated innovation.

At least if we continue to discuss this as a binary where agreeing with this affuture.org post means killing this legislation (as the post asks for) and not replacing it.

Oh wow that's because there is not a Moon breakup scene in Cloud Atlas!

It's in the movie adaption of The Time Machine. In the book though he just arrives in the future and the moon is already gone (Chapter XIV The Further Vision https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/35/pg35-images.html).

I think I read cloud atlas and the time machine, and watched the time machine movie around the same time, and got everything mixed up.

That was a fun afternoon reading through bits of books until I could figure out what I was remembering.

I guess I think we should hold models used for non-academic reasons to a higher standard, and there should be oversight.

I don't know if all the language in this bill does what we need, but I'm against letting large corporations like a META or X live test whatever they want on their end users.

Calling out derivative models are exempt sounds good; only new training sets have to be subjected to this. I think there should be an academic limited duty exemption, models that can't be commercialized likely don't need the rigor of this law.

I guess I don't agree with affuture.org and think we need legislation like this in place.

Cloud Atlas (released 6 years after Moonfall was released as a book) also has a story with the earth being destroyed by mans attempt to harness the moon for energy (and also has a bad film adoption).

Moonfall is the first book I know of that used the concept, but it seems like humans have been fascinated with man or god(s) manipulating the moon for a very very long time, the oldest case I can think of is from the Quran (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splitting_of_the_Moon), so we've been fixated on the idea for a long time.

Maybe there are more cases and I will read about them in the comments here.

nvidia-smi exposes all cards, so you could run the same workload on multiple cards. This (likely) won't solve the problem of certain failure modes being intrinsic to the work being completed/compute environment. I would speculate some of those aggressive failure modes would present themselves across all the hardware.

Maybe someone could run workloads across CUDA and ZLUDA (Nvidia, and other hardware), but really we just might need more reliability to efficiently and reliability run a file system across disparate GPU hardware.
