If you have High Sierra on USB, it installs just fine. You need a High Sierra machine to make the USB stick, but once you have one, its simple to reinstall.

The MacMini will still be running in 5-7 years, reliably, and still have updates from Apple on the macOS side. It will still be running in 10+ years too should you keep it that long.

MinisForum makes disposable hardware. We used to use them for TV computers at work, and while they are cheap, they are fidgity with hardware and drivers, come with hacked-Windows Enterprise installed by default, and generally last for about 2 years before they hit the recycle pile.

Kroger here has done that with their app. The loyalty card/phone number still works for many of the specials, but the "digital deals" thing by using the app and scanning a QR code on the price sticker gives BIGGER discounts. Its not the most convenient way to shop, but I am willing to save 15-20% more usually.

I use LuLu, it works great. Its kept my older versions of Photoshop and Acrobat from complaining and showing me ads for newer versions for the last couple years!

Was this NetZero? I kind of recall their CDs would do something similar, launch an Ad supported version of Netscape--but if you just copied the Dial-Up connection it made, you could recreate it without the need for the Browser.

I haven't either, though I've purposely kept my M1 on Sonoma for now because the newer OSs have dorked up my Ham Radio software.

I'll echo this, I've been buying these for my wife since the original Bip, and the battery life alone is more than worth it. She wears hers nearly daily.

Me too. I haven't used Facebook since 2010, Twitter since 2016, and I recently closed out my Instagram after using it since 2012ish. Tiktok has almost zero of my info besides my email address, a few videos I've uploaded, and my watching preferences. I'm actually fine with data collection on the location/watching habits/likes--it gives me more relevant content.

I completely agree. Another thing I like is that Tiktok is also nearly completely anonymous. I don't see anyone I know on there, showing me their stupid kid videos or telling me about the latest thing they just bought. I see OTHER PEOPLE's kid videos and things they bought and if I don't want to see them, I just scroll on.

This has been my experience--once and awhile a new topic will start showing up in my feed, say 1%'r motorcycle clubs or peanut-butter-whisky drinkers. All it takes is a couple "not interested" clicks and poof, back to people showing off vintage computers and HAM radio videos.

Not sure why this is downvoted--that's basically exactly how the app picks videos for you to watch. YOU click on things or linger on them; the AI remembers and shows you more.

Having watched a lot of TikTok, I can say they aren't going to get much from the vast majority of that data.

I completely agree on keeping old gear running but the tradeoffs in power consumption make it worth upgrading to current-gen after a certain amount of time.

I did this a few years ago to support an HP3000 in a new job. Spent a year working with COBOL enough to get semi proficient and feel confident running and editing programs. We eventually turned the system down in favor of web+SQL and I'll likely never COBOL again, but the truth is COBOL is a pretty straightforward and fun language to work with if you're not already stuck in the C/C++ mode of thinking. Its pretty easy to read and decipher.

I LOVED my 11" Air, bought one in 2010, used it daily as my only laptop until 2017, gave it to my son who used it until he graduated in 2019. I replaced it with a 13" MBP which I also really like. MBP died a cat-related falling off the table tragedy recently so I pulled out the Air and was shocked--in 12ish years, my eyes no longer think its tiny screen is reasonably viewable. I wish they'd make another 11" with a retina display, but I guess Apple knows best, I replaced the 13" MBP with another 13" MBP, an M1 this time.

Grape Nuts with a just a touch of honey or piloncillo and allowed to soften for 3-5 minutes before eating them is my breakfast of choice for over 20 years now.
