I've often wondered how much it would cost to learn HVAC stuff myself and then set up a "business" so I could purchase the the necessary items to DIY AC fixes.

I was under a similar impression. I recall it being a midly interesting idea, before a lot of people determined it had too many issues and it fizzled out and the company began to push some other project.

I looked at going back to school for about a year and and no matter how I spun the numbers I wouldn't be able to afford it. I dont have the time, space or likely the coherency to explain it all in a single HN comment, but the way the costs were structured and the financial aid system struck me as quite blunty, incredibly stupid.

I saw a comment on HN the other day about bay area nurses making like $200k. Idk how true it is, but fuck if so, what the hell am I doing with my life.

Practically, there are plenty of ways to unbundle college. Culturally... it doesn't work like that.

Yep. And you can replace college with a lot of things in that statement and aptly describe why I have nope hope for anything anymore.

I mean I suppose it's possible to suffer heat related injuries or dehydration, but people have survived in equal or worse climates, so I assume you dont mean that literally.

Generally though, the heat is pretty bad, particularly if you're stuck inside with no AC. I've had a couple rounds of that and its certainly not comfortable at all. Honestly I'm sick of southeastern weather.

I switched a couple *nix machines I had to ctwm a while back. Its a neat manager if you want to go for a "retro" twm look but want a few more features Config is mostly like twm but more options.

I do it as well. I've done it in other states down here as well. Like you said its possible, but theres definitely a hit on my QoL.

I'm working on some projects right now related to quasi-retrocomputing stuff and Windows is the target for some of them for a few reasons. The Windows kernel still offers some some nice API's that linux either doesn't have anymore or is in the slow process of gutting. Plus whe shopping for specialized hardware, I'm often stuck with linux kernel 2.x drivers, and while I doubt the equivlent Windows drivers have been updated since then, I have more faith that they can run unchanged. Plus WSL offers me enough of what I'm missing for now. Also, admittedly I'm just more familiar with it.

Also my GPU does not play well on Linux. Games have performed much worse under Proton or even natively on Linux than they do on Windows.

Eventually I'd like to start trying some OS's outside the Unix-like and Windows family though. I've had my fill of Linux, Windows and *BSD.

Sleep deprivation had gotten to me this year (for unrelated reasons). I remember at one particular, my AC had died and I was waiting for someone to replace it and I hadn't slept in few days. By mid day it was so hot and stack with the sleep deprivation it was incredibly disorienting. I remember laying in bed hoping I could catch an hour of sleep but never fully falling asleep, just sweating and unable to think straight. The combo made it feel almost comparable to some moments from a bad trip.

Interesting. I remember sometime last year someone on HN asked a question about predicted conflicts in the near future and Egytp and Ethiopia over this damn was one that caught my eye, as I had not heard of it before. It looks like they were correct.

Unfortunately most of the things I've learned from my incomplete side projects are useless. Some may make for interesting discussion sometimes, but ultimately nothing that will help me in any tangible way.

I've always thought down-votes could be removed without losing much. Rule breaking content can still be flagged and it removes one low effort kneejerk response option.

I wrote some swift maybe 4 or 5 years ago when I was doing mobile app stuff and had access to a Mac. I remember finding the language pretty enjoyable, but considered its xplat potential questionable. At the time, I believe it did run on linux and people were touting it as a solid platform for building server side applications. I dont think that was ever realized though.

And how many of those are going to let you in without at least a decade of experience in the specific domain, and real world experience with whatever guidelines or practices they use (i.e. MISRA for X).

I recently tried adrafanil (modafanil pro-drug) to combat really bad sleep deprivation. It works, as far as I can tell, as I'm not passing out mid day and I can think coherently. I'm also hoping I can take some of my weekends back, but there are some side effects which I'm not sure are a product of it or something else.

I wish I had taken anything but latin in HS. Only reason I did it was because of colleges requiring foreign language classes, and by the time I had graduated, I didn't have any plans of going to college.

It seems like the only realsitc pivots are going to be adjacent business type positions, and even then there's a chance of a payout depending on company / position, etc. Like you said though I would hate these more than I do the software jobs.
