Very cool! So much potential for interesting stuff in this algorithm. I also recently made a minimalistic browser playable cellular automata [1] implementation for a game jam - I think it's relevant enough to link here, might be interesting to some.

This is huge, and unfortunately not surprising at all in the age of massive ever-growing out of control tech monopolies that do whatever the fuck they want. Whatever reads in the TOS now, they can and will just reword it when they need it. There's no trust.
Every service and utility gets enshittificated sooner or later, it's a given at the moment. I deleted all my private repos, github and all other MS services should be avoided in the future.
The only solution is to self-host. Gitea is good.

I installed Matrix and Synapse to my local server, but the installation process is not good, and the usability is bad. Clients are super buggy. Unusable, basically, as information got lost all the time.
I'm a game designer and a low-level game engine programmer, grumpy about slow hard-to-use software, so maybe there's a higher chance of doing more good than harm, lol.
I'm talking about the general path towards the future. Not about the present moment.
The American culture based on greed and violence started to rot the western civilization from inside. Massive out-of-control monopolies continued to balloon to unbelivable scales. It was the beginning of the end for both the USA and the Putin dictatorship in Russia.
The pace of innovation kept growing exponentially as predicted. In the 20's humanity has reached a crossroads with technology, and will have to choose the path. Four choices. Two forwards: either a utopian or a dystopian type II civilization. Two backwards: technological degress or extinction.

I had the exact same impression. Is anyone working on similar projects and planning to open source it soon? If not, I'm gonna start building one myself.

Just as I was complaining about the worst monopolies taking the lead on AI - Mozilla comes to the rescue by announcing independent open-source AI ecosystem. This is great news!
What a HUGE shame that the worst and greediest american tech monopolies are leading us into this new world. It feels extremely dystopian. Let's hope the OSS community can build something with the llama models.
I've had those exact same feelings. Yesterday I used GPT-4 for the first time and it blew my mind. Every time I start to doubt if it's just hype, I go test it, and it blows my mind again. My personal productivity has skyrocketed, so the future seems extremely bright.
I hope we can eliminate all mundane tasks in the world with this. Let's just focus on advancing science, developing new technologies, and addressing all the neglected problems in the world. Let's democratize and open source all these tools and build incredible software for everyone in the world.
I think the curious creative builder -personality will thrive in this new world, because the productivity of an individual is so next level. We'll be able to accomplish huge things with small teams.

Yeah, I get your point. Of course their point of view about the culture and society is unique and important and absolutely worth listening to, but it is true they will certainly miss a lot of the cultural nyances for exactly the reasons you described.
I'm finnish and work with a lot of international people, many of whom have lived here for decades. None of them speak Finnish, and I, and all the other Finns I know, would never expect them to speak it. It's not that big of a deal.

So much of the software industry has been consolidated into the hands of a few monopolies. Web, with all of its horrible problems, is pretty much the only democratic platform we have left, and even it is constantly being eaten away by these monopolies.
It's your device. If you want a website to be able to store data permanently on it, it is your choice. Not apple's. Not google's. Fucking yours.

I agree, it's quite ridiculous to call that performant when considering the reality of what's possible. But compared to other electron apps, it's way better, and the team has done a good job with the bad tools given. I suppose the bar isn't very high when it comes to performance, but it's a nice positive signal that it's used as a marketing point like that. Although you do point out that the expectations are often like from two different worlds, which is true. I guess it leaves room for competent competitors.

He put the running costs at $10 million a year. Being generous, as some costs fall every year, let’s double that. Wikipedia can operate quite comfortably with the cash it has already, without running another banner ad, for twenty years.
So where does the money go? Not on the people doing the actual work on the site, of course.
Foundation lists 550 employees. Top tier managers earn between $300,000 and $400,000 a year, and dozens are employed exclusively on fund-raising

In general I only select services that are easy and fast to install and backup and have a nice UX so it won't go unused. I always install a service into a virtual machine first and take notes about the process. If there are any red flags like too complicated configration, missing documentation, heavy reasource usage, crippleware aka paywalling core features, then I just skip it and move on the next one.
After the service has proven itself trustworthy and useful, it's nice to start contributing to the project too. Everybody wins. And I gotta say, there are some incredible open-source software out there.
I am/was their paying customer but I already explained that in the other comment.
My point was that I'm tired of not being able to trust any SaaS company long term. The service generally only gets worse over time, and then your data is at risk. So I decided I'm not gonna take any more chances with these and just try hosting everthing I need myself. So far so good.
