Go is great, its open source. I wish Hacker News open sourced their code so that we knew what they are doing. Scared of having folks game the system? Why not have the community make it the best algorithm possible. Why keep pushing YC all the time? Do they not have enough already? Painters and hackers! ha!

Facebook censors so much and swaps out links. I can't even post a link to https://scientificamerica.com. Their SSL cert is weak and should not be trusted. It is swapped out for phishing scams.

Containers in themselves offer little additional value to virtual machines. Don't switch over just because of the hype. Evaluate it yourself! (I personally LOVE vagrant!)

Services like Airbnb and Uber will be become commodities. There will be some service like Kayak or Expedia to find you the lowest fare in the future. These companies will have to offer an API or be undercut by competitive services. Uber and these other services better grab as much money as they can right now.

We currently support 1.8.0 GAE features but we do add patches that are a part of more current GAE releases if they are bug fixes.

We were initially funded by Google with a grant to start the project back in 2009 at UC Santa Barbara. Follow on funding came from IBM research, and then larger grants from the NSF and NIH. In 2012 the project spun out of the university and was commercialized. AppScale Systems is now a Cloud Technology Partner with Google.

I've been working on AppScale (https://github.com/AppScale/appscale), the open source implementation of GAE, which implements the datastore API, along with most of the other GAE APIs. Your app is portable to any other hosting environment if the need ever comes.

Their traction numbers seem pretty impressive with over 3 million active applications, which they announced at Google IO of this year. Last year, iirc, it was around 1 million apps.

I agree. The private case may be more appealing though. App developers might have some enterprise customers who want to run their applications behind a firewall.

Well my team and I have been working on AppScale for the past 3-4 years to do away with the lock-in for GAE. They iterate pretty fast on their platform, so we're always playing catch up. Eucalyptus and AWS did recently partner, so AWS has come around to supporting other implementations of their API. The EC2 API getting further reach is a good thing in my opinion for AWS even if they aren't directly making money off of it. Google has been cognizant of this from the beginning and hence why they helped fund AppScale.

While there are a lot of AWS offerings/cloud services which have vendor lockin, the core EC2 API is supported by Eucalyptus (http://eucalyptus.com) and OpenStack (http://openstack.com).

Actually Goolge and the GAE team are very much about app/data portability. They even sponsored our open source App Engine project AppScale (http://appscale.cs.ucsb.edu/sponsors.html) which lets users run their app on their own hardware or on EC2.
