Abstract thoughts are conveyed with a class of language, this has not worked well in its predominance historically ( only math survived) similarly how music is communicated but not accepted as a universal language.

It is interesting to see how start-ups (twitter, forsquare and now yammer) adopting or dropping programming languages rains hailstorm on twitter, HN and blogosphere. As a serious PL designer, start-ups seem to be the prime market to target your language.

You probably didn't see what kind of crap SF.net was before this redesign. I think they did a good job of redesigning homepage but project pages stlll look like they are work in progress..

It appears that his primary assumption, NPE prevention, on Options is based on blogs rather than actual good quality code.

If you look at how Options are used in Scala core lib, you wouldn't make such claims and you will definitely not use it only for null checks.

Three reasons I can think of, in order of time to get things done:

1. Availability, ease of use of Java based hosting provider

2. Time from writing code to live deployments

3. Lack of agile frameworks like rails, django or any other php framework (hot code reload etc.).

The only reason why RTFM fails is because documentation is outdated or non-existent.

With intermediate level this is lowest bar to achieve, and you will learn a lot just documenting the stuff as you will be forced to understand internals.

Ah, another eager, frustrated dev with 5 years of experience. As much as I can relate to your experience and mindset, I gotta tell you that I'm happy to not be alone.

I have a very simple advice that I got from someone far back, do one thing that will make you feel that you accomplished something. It could be anything, an android/iphone app, a usable web app or a game (in HTML5 may be?) or just patches to your favorite open source project.

The joy of building something which people use is unprecedented. It helped me a lot and I'm pretty confident it will help you too!

I think that FP is much more than that, it actually helps me solve problems in a very different and elegant way. I don't know how you classify this benefit but for me it was analogous to solving a problem with recursion or loop; while both can solve problems, recursion seems to be much more intuitive and elegant way - Same for FP vs Imperative approaches.
