Like all big companies, when something comes along that is growing fast, where they don't have a product, they might choose to buy an existing one to get in the market. On some of them they might spend lots of time and money building huge amounts of new technology and improving on some of them so they were hardly comparable to the original. SQL Server is one example I worked on. The original sybase product had a pretty nice sql language with stored procedures, but the implementation didn't take us very far. It was basically awful. We spent years building out a new database with that same sybase surface layer, we added lots of new things over time - new execution system, new query optimizer, integrated it with .net, etc. Because we didn't have to develop a new surface or sql language, it helped a lot. I always wondered how much that cost Microsoft to buy it. I'd say even at 100 million it was worth it.

It is a fact that there was an insurrectionist attack on congress on Jan 6, that there were obvious lies about false election fraud pushed by the president and eventually by the majority of the Republican party. What are you getting at by saying whether it reflects the views of half of America? Those views are objectively incorrect, not based on reality. Reality here is not based on someone's opinion, no matter how widespread the belief in it is.

Do you see Tesla as a snakeoil company today when it comes to their batteries, drivetrain, range, reliability? I wouldn't put Nikola and Tesla in the same categories. Tesla has one serious issue imho that they can only fix with refunds of the cost, that their auto-driving cars probably won't get there in the next 5+ years, so all the people that paid up to 10k for that will have to get some compensation.

We should get a WA state law passed controlling information access for cars. I'm sure it will be really hard with all the usual suspects against it. Most recent cars have a privacy policy and have some part of opt out. But it's unclear what you really get. A customer friendly law would be something like you can opt out and have your private tracking info deleted whenever you want. We should have a law against phone company tracking too. A year later and they have no reason to know what cell towers I was at, unless they are selling tracking on people. You've always paid the bill in a couple of months at most anyway.

One more piece of this is they endlessly mutate, I don't think in reality there is a limit. Most mutations probably don't help the virus proliferate, might cause it to not be effective. Eventually the shape of a new one, what your body is looking for in it's remembered virus history will change enough that it can't be detected. We see this in real time with the cv19 variants. My mental model of this (I am in software so I welcome corrections to the applicability) is it's like antivirus in software - the bad guys making viruses keep trying new variations on old ones, switching what the protection software is looking for so they can get around detection methods, as well as trying to find new holes.

It's different this time ;-) In 2008 there was a lot of new construction that wasn't yet sold, and people bought houses out in the boonies sometimes, but they got loans they could never pay for - expecting the house would appreciate and they justify a new loan, or sell it soon for more money. Prices fell and they couldn't get a new loan or pay their old loan.

Today there is a housing shortage, & that's driving up prices. I'm sure there are some people hoping to flip their houses, but all I read is there is much more stringent mortgage requirements than before and in hot markets at least there are multiple offers. So it's similar in a vague way, but it's much different in it's the housing shortage that is driving a lot of the price increase today. Still, eventually I expect the shortage to ease, builders will make more houses, so that should lower the pressure or lower prices, eventually, at least somewhat.

If people aren't buying so many houses they can't afford, then shouldn't the problem of mass loans going back to the bank be avoided?

If the workers aren't important, then they don't need laws to stop them from looking for jobs elsewhere. Are us software engineers more important than those in other countries with comparable costs of living? That's hard to answer in general, but software engineers in the US are paid much better on average than in most European countries. Of course there are exceptions but hacker news is full of stories talking about this issue (many euro engineers come to the us bc we pay so much more).

It's very hard to overcome economics. If they don't pay their engineers at TSMC something approaching alternatives, they will start to leave. It doesn't matter whether the company made billions of dollars because of a few people - the company will struggle if they start losing their engineering talent. So that kind of sets their value.

What I'm arguing is that they'll need to pay better wages, otherwise people will leave, regardless of this law about advertising jobs.

It's not impossible, it just takes planning and multiple technical steps. Until the last 6 months, no other cars had plug in and charge (with your car telling the charger the credit card number and/or car id)! You had to sign in to an app or scan your card on the charger itself.

Telsa also is the only car manu. was access to enough batteries to ship car in en masse. All the the companies making evs are significantly limited by batteries. Finally teslas have much better energy efficiency/mile. 800v charging and car systems is one area tesla is behind (they are 400v).

There are few repairs needed so parts don't matter ;-) More seriously I do hope that there can be third party access to shop manuals and repairs though.

Correct! Teslas have been reasonable for a lot of long distance travel with their superchargers for 5+ years. They built chargers between big cities, close enough to each other. Every other ev suffers in comparison for long distance travel. The writer did mention that it was different for teslas (still not perfect), but I don't think they really made it clear enough. With a tesla model s you can drive cross country and I can go almost anywhere, whether that is across Washington State to San Diego or BC to Banff.

So consciousness is some kind of messy combination of matter, responding to inputs, to connections between particles. This feels wholly inadequate. My human consciousness is reduced when I get shot in the head but the particles are still there, so think about when my brain deteriorates, when I die. If you put my matter into a container all that matter is still there but I'm no longer able to have human consciousness (unless there is some kind of thing outside of physical laws, which I am not going to just jump to).

So this feels like a useless definition. Like the computational power of something is a product of it's mass. It's much more than that.

The 10x class here are not 10x programmers - they have 10x or more the reach because they can be a celebrity/leader on a platform that reaches vastly more people. But the other side of that is the very few people will be able to command much attention, 1 in 100k or something. They will suck up tons of money and the network affect of being able to reach thousands of people at once will suck ever more money to them. As people lose their jobs from increasing automation, the somehow lacking in clear conclusion article says more income will go to these kind of incredible-reach people.

Nurses and teachers are more important than me, a programmer. I was reminded of this when my state put me in the last vaccination group. Yet because of supply and demand, but also the potential for companies to earn from software and the vagaries of stock compensation, that programmers often can earn much more. I want all people to earn a living wage, especially those other "essential" but hopefully not continuing to be disposable workers in grocery stores and other underpaid jobs like food preparation and the people that take care of senior citizens - they need health insurance, a living wage, time off, respect. In other countries than the US it's much better for them, perhaps we'll get there during our current 'new new deal' phase in the US.

"Sumer is icumen in". I can puzzle that out more than 750 years later, hopefully without false cognates, "summer is a-coming in". It kind of matches the translations. A human being just like us wrote it, trying to be happy, get along in his life. What am I doing that will last that long or make an impact? I mean except for my twitter feed, obviously.

It seems like as soon as spacex has more polar satellites they'd be able to match this service with lower latency because they'll be closer to the earth. The only thing spacex can't handle is dense areas of usage like a big city, but Alaska doesn't have that kind of density. These can be targeted to a specific user or area they say, but still seems like Spacex could cover a lot of their use case. What are their advantages then?

Instead of negative energy this warp drive idea requires 10^30 more energy than the matter contained in Jupiter, so we aren't quite there ;-).

The additional issue is whether something going faster than the speed of light violates causality, like a warp drive. I've never understood how to reconcile causality with the fact of so called 'spooky interaction at a distance'. If it's faster than the speed of light, and you can communicate even the info of a bit, isn't that going to violate causality? Multiple other ev companies used the skateboard. After 9 years, tesla is probably moving to a related system, where the batteries are structural components. But it's been a major success, including for the S, 3, Y. There are more tesla skateboard evs than all other evs combined.
