The Soyuz-FG which has been used since 2001 has had a 100% success rate till today. Seems pretty good to me.

Off topic, but I found those photos to be very nice. Is it just an app and an iPhone? I would love to be able to take photos like those. Are there any blogs or anything which have guides on this sort of photography?

Am I alone in finding the graph scary? This rate of change in temperature is probably not something that would be easy to slow down, yet it feels like not many people care about this.

I love the romance of this. Even though the earth is only going to be a few pixels, the frame will contain a snapshot of the entire human race.

I had a front page item about a year ago. The article ended up getting like 300 points so it was on the front page for around 12 hours. All the content was served by nginx on a micro EC2 instance, nothing was even put on a CDN. But still, it worked flawlessly.

I kind of did something vaguely similar, except less cool. I wanted to learn a little python except there was problems with getting internet access at my house. I was only without internet for like 3 weeks but that didn't cause too many problems with learning (and could always go to a friends house if I really needed internet). The best thing that helped me when learning was the python docs.

I highly suggest downloading documentation. Just going through little sections of the documentation was a great way to learn. Not having internet was also sometimes a good thing as there was very little distraction.

Hey, OP here. I realize now that it was a mistake to come off like that but there were a few reasons on why I did:

- I just felt like a piece of shit when I wrote it because I have no connections and have had a very hard time trying to get a normal job. I also had no confidence that any of this would work out so that did not help my ego when writing.

- When I submitted this to HN, it was fairly late and I went to sleep about half and hour later so basically I slept through the entire discussion going on here and it would have been a bit late to change anything after I woke up.

- There was a comment or two saying that maybe I should change the post of labs.im (before I went to sleep) but I did not know what I could write. I didn't just want to write something like "im smart and can do this well" because anyone could say that and I particularly dislike talking about myself like that.

The hardest part to that for me is the "get to know people" part. He already had a mentor before he started learning. How would one get a mentor in the first place? How do you get to know other people?

I doubt you will be able to just fly around with it anywhere you want. They probably will give you training since you are paying $100,000 and there is no other way to get any training.

Pretty disappointed on the comments here (this was written when people were saying moon landing was fake)... The training had to be exhaustive, there was no retrying. Each Apollo mission was an important step from the previous. They had to be prepared for just about anything and know how to do each step of the mission in their sleep. This kind of redundancy has always been there in manned spaceflight including the shuttle. One cool thing they have to assist in training these days is virtual reality training. One thing that is too common in these aerospace related budget estimates is that they go up. I am trying not to be pessimistic, but I have a feeling that their launch costs might go up a little bit. Even if it does it, their prices would still be groundbreaking nonetheless. I bought Dr. Zubrin's book on mars direct (its great!) and lets say that somehow the cost to send three spacecraft with the capability to come back (including development costs) is $10 billion (which I am pretty sure is a super under estimate but the spacex way might say otherwise). To put that into perspective google could have funded a full fledged manned mars mission and still save $2 billion to spare by not buying motorola...

But this is definitely possible even with nasa's reduced budget now that the shuttle is retired.

I am really hoping everything goes well in this mission; we are so close to being able to send astronauts into space through commercial companies. Space X is doing things cheaper and faster than any government has. These commercial companies are going to revolutionize spaceflight.

While they are doing all of this they need to develop their heavy lift rocket as fast as possible with the goal of landing a man on mars within 10 years. Elon Musk himself said a few days ago that we need to go to mars and it is possible for them to do this "as early as 2018". The reason for the quick timeline is because funding and political slaughter for space programs is more likely to happen as time goes on and as new presidents come in or some new economic trouble happens.

Following the success of the ISS, going to Mars should be an international endavour. It needs to be a goal not for one country, but the whole human race to become a multi-planetary species and go to Mars.

That is exactly what I was going to say. Investigating these UFOs would be a waste of money and a waste of time. I remember reading something where people would call to say they have spotted a ufo when they were actually looking at venus (the brightest "star").

I don't see how most computer screens - even the large widescreen ones are a problem when reading webpages. I sort of like scrolling... It would be weird for me to read from the top of the screen, move down to the middle and then make my way to the bottom. What I usually do when reading is keep my eyes in a relatively fixed position and I just scroll down very slowly. This thing is pretty cool, but it might be a little annoying to have tabs on the side just to save 10-20 pixels of vertical screen.

And while I don't find it difficult to click on tabs (keyboard shortcuts!) I really like the idea of having the url inside tabs - adding that firefox/chrome and then getting rid of the url bar would be pretty cool.

How is GPS going to be "inaccurate for some time in the near future" with the recent solar flares? Could you give me some links to articles or something? I read a lot of space related stuff and I haven't come across something like this.

Sure the things on the list aren't that bad, but if google can get that much just from you browsing the web they could probably get a lot more. And yeah they are transparent by showing what they know about you and it's one click to opt-out but how would someone even find that page in the first place.

Sorry I don't know much about this stuff, but I find some of the things done to the author pretty crazy. The one thing that really stood out for me was sending him back. That is a huge amount of money and time wasted for a ridiculous reason. Why can't you fight for yourself in these situations, you should have some rights because the crap they are doing is just unfair.

Also, what if you have a laptop with all your passwords and stuff, would they just go on ahead and copy your hard drive with you not being able to do anything?
