well still better than both ruining the planet and health with animal based processed food.

For B12? You do know that animals don’t produce B12, but microorganisms (that can be found in soil and untreated water) and that farmed animals eat B12 supplemented food?
So no, people don’t need meat. Not for B12, or for proteins or for iron or for anything else.
Do people want to eat meat? That’s a different story.
thanks for replying. and I like the quote :-)
how frustrating it is for you to do what you do and know what you know? I only know the “common” knowledge about climate change and it makes me angry every time I think about what we know and where we’re still heading.
and majority of that agriculture land is for animal agriculture (which is probably obvious to everyone by now)
Have no idea why you get downvoted, but I did notice few times now how HN crowd doesn’t know much about veganism or appreciates people who think animal agriculture is cruel.
Ah yeah, and also terribly destructive:
funny enough, was asking my self the same question yesterday after 5-minute googling didn’t get me anywhere. I see a recommendation mentioned below, but as I also saw, hard to find something where you can control signal to noise ratio
“help endure climate change”, while beef and eating meat is one of the major contributors to climate change … This is wrong on so many levels.
Zero harm is a myth for most things. But harm involved in producing cow’s milk (to animals, to environment) and plant based milk is HUGELY different.
It sounds to me you want to make everything relative so that the conclusion is “everything involves some harm, so I might just eat me some steaks and drink some cow milk, it won’t matter”. But it matters greatly. So let’s not do that.
I’m not looking for any high ground, I’m looking for decent ground. There’s no way you can compare the cruelty involved in producing cow milk to that of producing oat milk for example. It’s not in the same universe.
once I switched there’s no way I’m ever going back to cow’s milk. Why? Health, much greater taste variety, no cruelty involved to make it, environmental benefits.
“and justice for all”
not again. I can’t go through 641st “nuclear vs solar/wind” thread on HN about :)
Isn’t this an objective data driven problem and we can decide what’s better for short / medium / long term?
I have to say I didn’t notice anyone saying anything positive or dismissing about the climate change on HN lately, it seems we generally agree that the problem is very real. Although it seems that when it comes to solutions - lots of discussions and disagreement there.
but why?
thank you!
is there somewhere a summary of “basic science” problems that need to be solved to make fusion feasible? And - would throwing more money at the problem?
I tried that (accept and move on), but when you have kids...I find it impossible. I can’t accept that fate for them. How do you reason about that?
can’t they solve that problem with a bit of robotics and AI (i.e. unmanned defences)?
still, I see no serious action being taken to tackle the climate crisis. Current governments are just putting some dates by which we’ll stop doing x or y, but in really almost nothing concrete is done to stop the worst scenarios.
this is super positive of course, but I wonder - will it matter if we achieve it, but don’t stop the destruction of the environment caused by animal agriculture and fishing?
ok so science is not there yet and it’s not a “money” problem.
Really? For me switching process was long, but now that I’m vegan, I can’t tell you how much I enjoy the food I eat. Also, there was never an easier time to switch, so many substitutes (if you need them), so many great vegan restaurants (at least where I live). Again, variety of food, options, the flavours..just have to discover new things.
Btw, I was hardcore meat eater most of my life, but then things changed, I realized what I’m eating, what impact it has on my health, on the environment and it just started feeling wrong.
I’ve heard and read about all these initiatives that you and few others mentioned in your replies. However, (as per original question) I’m surprised we’re not investing much more resources into these. Again, super naive me - we put a lot of money and resources into finding the vaccine for covid and it quickly paid out, I think if we did the same for fusion energy we would also see big leaps in smaller period of time.
Or is fusion energy really not just a matter of how much cash we throw at the problem? I don’t buy that.
Fusion energy and regenerative agriculture. Maybe I’m naive, but I see those 2 being unbelievable transformative for the world, significantly improving quality of life and preventing all those really bad climate change scenarios that seem almost inevitable at this point.
