Because most of the time you can't monetize it enough to be able to escape your day job.

So at the end of the day, it's just beer money, and just creates more headaches (legal, taxes etc.)

RethinkDB's query language is infinitely better (among many things).

Same here, the x1 carbon is linux friendly and has a great keyboard. I don't have a retina display, but I don't need that to write code.

I've been using GitLab instead of GitHub recently for all my new projects and honestly there's nothing worse than GitHub and a few things are better - like having protected branches and master by default in it -, private respositories etc.

That being said, what both GitHub and GitLab are missing is actually becoming a "social network" or maybe more an active network. There are tons of interesting projects that pops up every day, that I would be interested in knowing about, contributing, but there's basically no way to learn about them.

Another nice thing is free roaming in many countries abroad.

Hey CoreOS, quick question for my own curiosity. You have released/are releasing tons of cool stuff, I'm just wondering what you plans are to maintain them? How much to you expect the community to update them? Is your team growing as fast as you release software?

It was mostly a lack of docs. Most of the documentation assumes citusDB, and how to get things work without citusDB is left out.

I tried pg_shard a few months ago and after a few hours, I gave up. I somehow remember that partitioning MySQL was easier, and that's not a compliment.

For the same reason as why you shouldn't have a service that locates where sex offenders/ex inmates, this service shouldn't exist. So many things can go wrong with something like this...

I like how CoreOs folks take each painful thing to do, and come up with a simple to use solution. This should save people (and me) quite some time.

This is a really cool project. Have you tried to get funds from a university? I don't see why no universities would be interested in that.

Anyway, I hope things will get financially better for you.

I had a hard time before to understand their catch phrase/what they were doing. Improving privacy and control is really what they provide, making the Open Source web apps viable is more for marketing purposes. That somehow doesn't resonate well with me (I had to go one of their meetup to get a better picture of what they are doing).

That being said, they really do something cool if you spend some time looking at it. They tackle security issues with a good approach IMO.

I kind of think that Gitter is a joke and I'm not convinced they can do better than Slack. I mean their Android app has the balls to ask you to write your GitHub credentials.

Maybe Asana/plain IRC is a better solution.

If this was true, Debian would have not build/release this version of Chromium. The author is living in the past or in another dimension. Some projects are complex, and it's hard/impossible to read/understand everything for a single human being.

You are then ushered into a room with the programmer's worst nightmare - a blank whiteboard.

It may be the case for a few, but some people (including me) feel pretty comfortable with a white board. There's nothing hard in using a whiteboard. It's just a big sheet of paper...

Then if people think that they will never have to use a whiteboard to explain the design of their system to someone, maybe it's because they just "design" simple system.

I open one window per project, and use a good windows manager (awesome wm ^_^) and it works like a charm.

But then people don't want to use a tiling windows management because it's too hard to learn...
