i've tried heroku a few times, always found it kinda painful to learn and felt helpless when things go wrong..

not sure if its because i'm used to building own servers (which might be inefficient)

maybe heroku is better for people with less sys admin skills? or it might just be way better now (i haven't tried in over a year).

now i use rackspace/ec2/linode for rails.

yes did consider code reviews.

our thought on this would be mainly for people to check outsourced work is not way out of line.

in a 30-60 minute review you can't get too deep, but you can give a general opinion of the overall quality of the code and whether or not the developers are way out of line.

it might be more a sanity check for non-tech website owners.

as a side point, there should be a point where you can comment that "things look good", but i agree the designer should have to comment on why they look good..

we're working out designer guidelines now :)

really appreciate the feedback, and i agree.. the feedback needs to skew towards "useful things you can do to improve your site, preferably the easiest things to do"

TBH: they were the first two reviews we got done and that is what the designers came up with.. we wanted to soft launch and improve rather than wait for the 'perfect sample'

we've since run about 10 more (actually getting a bunch of websites to review from HN) and the reviews are getting better so we'll be replacing those samples soon...

one thing that we've seen from these reviews is that there are some great projects out there that need website help - sometimes i think people lose site of the fact that even a small startup can look as big as Apple if they have a decent website.

(also note i'm a dev not designer - we started this idea because i've needed it countless times on projects i've been working on)

well it is a euphemism but it is also jail.

working 9-5 earning a decent salary is something that can hold you up.. - opportunity cost to try something new or take a risk is so much higher

i've previously had $50k locked for over a year (and thought i'd NEVER get it back). I then vowed never to use them again...

but buying stuff with paypal is just SOO easy.. its 3 clicks... so much easier than getting a credit card out.

a small amount of inflation (2-3%) is generally seen as good and the target of reserve banks around the world... you think they have this target because inflation is BAD?

inflation encourages investment (better invest to beat inflation)

deflation is bad unless you already have a lot of money. it discourages investment (why invest? i can just sit here and the value of my money goes up)

you can call inflation bad, but it is still better than the alternatives.

For those people doubting the future of MSFT, here is my take:

MSFT is both a tech company and a utility.

It has growth potential (phones, surface, search, xbox) but it is also completely essential for global business (servers, AD, SQL Server, Exchange, Sharepoint).

In that sense it is a utility. If you took out all the MSFT software in the world everything basically stops. Your electricity probably doesn't work, you probably can't get on a train to get to work and if you manage to get to work you can't login to anything.

People say "but my company has BYOD!" that might be true, but MSFT is still the infrastructure it is running on. You can bring your AAPL car but you're still driving on an MSFT road.

just because you're not an 'expert' doesn't mean you shouldn't try...

you gotta try to get better at it.
