I really, reallly wish there was an AdBlock software with a proper acceptable ads. Get a few people to inspect websites with lets say 10-20-30$(cheap for any website which actually wants to make money) application fee to cover the cost of the inspection and whitelist that website. OF course give us plain and precise information about what is acceptable with a few levels of control from the user, plus a button to report a website that is actually not doing good. Once you lose your privileges, you pay double/triple or more to apply again.

This is actually what I do for myself, have over 300 sites which i visit semi-occasionally, that have disabled ads because I like those websites and those ads are actually something worth my connection, a nice way to pay out to the website. If AdBlock had done this, I really believe it would have been so much better than as it is right now.

I really did not wanted to blame YC. My mention of them is mostly because they are the biggest incubator, so people who get in should have at least minimum amount of marketing skills. They literally make fool of themselves in front of their main "customers" and apparantly we are still talking about one of the cofounders. You are trying to run companies worth millions and do such stupid mistakes, it is just beyond understanding for me.

Can anyone please explain to me why a YC company is making such a terrible name for themselves at a website which is literally FULL with people, who they should aim at building positive image with. I am pretty sure that over 70% of their users have at least a username in this community. I hardly have ever seen a worse way to respond to a marketing crisis.

edit: Now the answer of the co-founder(you can find it below) is way better and it should have been the first reaction to this post. Hopefully there can be a happy result to both sides.

Something like a wysiwig editor. I didn't tried markdown, but it didn't look like supporting it. Small change was pretty easy to make but I didn't play with bigger changes or dropping something more heavy.

I guess we will see when the demo is back online or you can install it somewhere to try it out. It looked pretty good.

Android? And also your About page is not working. Otherways seems like a nice idea, it really depends on the type and quality of the content which is provided :)

I am not sure about Live JS, but I have used Anchor CMS / http://anchorcms.com / and I have been pretty happy with it, with a few exceptions. It is small and lightweight, can easily be self-hosted and has a nice selection of themes/ http://anchorthemes.com / and you can easily make your own design. It powers my own personal blog and visiting anchorshowcase.com will show you some more blogs powered by it.

The thing about it that I don't like that much are : 1. Really weak plugin ecosystem. If you want something specific, you will probably have to make it yourself, as the CMS doesn't even have a plugin support, you have to edit things in the code. 2. Written in PHP. I know Python, not PHP so making changes for me is especially hard so anything complex for me is a no no. 3. It has been in development for a bit and the development has slowed while they are trying to build the 1.0 version.

Big phones --> Smaller Phones --> Smaller Phones --> We have the technology to show NSFW content on the phones --> The screens start to become bigger and bigger.

One of my goals for the next few years in my life is building a proper personal knowledge system, combined with everything that is needed for something like that to work. Mostly online, but there might be access from desktop/mobile apps. Included system like Anki. Wiki-like website for everyone with good tagging/linking between each posts. You can then make each piece of content accessible for everyone, behind a password or just accessible for you. Additional features like daily journal, todos, short/long range goals, asking you for permission to open all your content to the public if something happens to you/or you decide to not pay(small monthly charge for hosting and maintenance), of course if you want you are free to not allow that.

I feel a lot of people on HN have great and organized knowledge system and open sourcing the system with the knowledge/the knowledge part is important/ would be great. Of course it will take some time and effort, but I would love to have access to such system of some users like patio11 for example and gladly will pay money for something like that.

P.S Feel free to copy the idea, I am pretty sure that it is not unique anyways, though I am not aware of something that has done a good job in this area. Think of it like an open source knowledge system with a hosted version.

He is not demanding. He is pleading/asking politely. "Please". It is totally up to you whether you want to do what he asks for you.

Granted, I agree with you to a point and I don't see any reason you are downvoted/beside the obvious "don't be so negative" point, though I will upvote you, I feel this conversation is important/. At the same time it is extremely easy for you to use these articles/posts even in your CV and in building in your brand. Of course, you might not need that, but there are still a lot of uses including showing them to your future kids or thinking about how your writing changed someones live.

Leave that, there are specific content, which I have no issues being behind a paywall. You might put it behind a paywall/e-book/, show me that your content is useful to me, I will pay you in a heartbeat. Of course this is something that will take even more time.

To your point above spending time with new things or friends/family/working, I don't think that the author wanted you to stop doing them. Again he is asking you politely, do that if you have free time AND you are willing to help some complete strangers online. It is not something everyone would want to do and this is completely okey.

The issue with Excel is that it is extremely easy to use and is widely popular, especially for new companies as it is available to anyone with an Office plan, which is available on almost any Windows computer with very few exceptions. So when it comes to that a new business will rarely use something more complex and more expensive in the short term, they just prefer to use the Microsoft Office programs.

This is something I have mey a lot, including in the hotel/restaurant niche, where I work. All of them use it exactly because it is easy and is insanely powerful even for newbies. On the other hand at a certain point they start to learn about the negatives of it and an application that will do what they did in Excel in a proper way, is very easy sell.

I understand your point. My pricing is entirely based of what I learned about the sphere in a hour that most of the cheap writers charge half a cent/cent per word, which would make around 5$ per such article and multiplied that by a big number/10x sounded good/.

I am curious though, what an article written using this outlined process will cost? How much would you charge about that? I am pretty sure that I won't be able to afford you though as anything above 100$ per article will put my startup back in red, which is a scary prospect for now.

My definiton of content is pretty simple, actually. 5 blog posts per month, which are posted on our website in the Article Sections/pretty similiar as a blog, but my customers perfer having it like that/. Also I need like 5 additional pieces like these ones for guest posts/articles in magazines/newsletter.

My goal with the articles is to keep building a brand and potentially attract new clients.

Right now these 10 pieces take over 40 hours from me, research/write and collobration with an editor as English is my third language. This is insanely huge amount of time, which I have to do instead of working on the product.

I offer web sites and different web/desktop systems for hotels and restaurants and I have reached 2,000$ monthly revenue/most of it is profit/. This includes web sites, booking systems, some legal documents, specific SMS services. Also I partner with a marketing company, so there are additional commisions, which is what I use to pay the bills, so everything that I make through the main startup gets into a fund, that I want to use to grow the product.

I am looking for good content with useful information, that could attract clients. Posts that will be published in high traffic blogs or magazines. I tried with 40-50$ for 750-850 words in oDesk, but didn't work out that great as I received only offers from people, who were clearly not native English speakers.

Is it worth hiring people, where English is the second language/it actually is my third language/ and get a editor, who would polish the content for me. This is what I used to do for the last 4-5 months.

I like writing, I really do. But I reached a point, when I am not sure it is worth doing that, instead I could focus at sales/programming, which is what I do right now.

This is pretty much what I am looking for, though I am afraid of hiring in the big marketplaces like oDesk, afraid of not having any way to make sure these are good writers with a good knowledge in the niche that I work.

I tried once in oDesk and was flooded with offers for half a cent per word despite my budget, which was way higher. This could work on a certain level/like front page, AdWords, FB Ads/, though I don't really know how can I trick my customer to write a blog post for me or an article that will be published in a magazine/blog.

This is how I worked till now, but it doesn't seem feasible to keep doing as I feel my time and attention will be more useful building additional features/fixing bugs, aka programming /which is the thing I prefer to do anyways/.

Once we add Software/Maintenance/R&D/The Infrastructure/Brand + a healthy profit margin it makes all the sense in the world :)

I get my ass of my chair and go out. Get a friend or just solo and go to someplace new, preferably on the open. Don't believe other developers the sun outside won't kill you.

I live in a city and just a one hour car ride there are countless of different awesome places to visit, old fortresses, 1000 meters mountain peaks, spa centers and many more. I haven't managed to visit them all and I have been trying and I am pretty sure that there are great places that would give you the inspiration you seems to need.

Your business is still there, it will wait for you. Don't forget you founded that company and you own it, not the other way around!

His points are mostly true, at least for some people, but I think we should go deeper than that. There are people who hate reading tech books and prefer to get the information in concise/shorter way through internet/SO. I am one of them, I have tried reading different software engineering books(widely recommended ones), but I just can't get into them. And yet I can easily digest an article about specific issue I have, try it out and if it works the article goes into my Pocket so I can check it again in the future, if something similar happens.

But give me a good fantasy novel, I will devour it. Wheel Of time (13 x 700 pages) was completed in 3 months. Chronicles of Amber? Done. ~60 books of Pratchett, a lot of them multiple times? Done. Tolkien? Done. There were countless of times, where I couldn't sleep before finishing a book, staying up to 4-5 am, when I usually go to sleep around 23-24:00. That's why I feel it is really hard to start a book, when you don't know what type of books you like. Some people enjoy fantasy/sci-fi/romance/action/prose and many more. Maybe something non-fiction? And I feel that schools should somehow help students discover their favourite authors and their favourite ganres.

The Night Watch by Sir Terry Pratchett. I have always liked his Discworld series, though two books had a bigger place in my heart : The Small Gods and The Night Watch. The first book was given to me as a young teenager, looking through his way to live and I am pretty sure that it took a huge part of my religious beliefs later(not exactly atheism, but agnosticism mostly).

But The Night Watch... It's a book, that I have rereaded over ten times in the last 3 years and will continue reading it. It is a time travel story, where the main commander of police forces goes back in time and has to be a part of a revolution. I mean, I can talk about it for ages, but I really don't want to spoil it, so go ahead check it out(although to fully grasp the ideas of the book you should read the first few books of the Watch series, but believe me all of them are worth it).

Something else that I loved to read when I was younger(12-14) was Winnetou, but my tries to check it again once I get into my 20s wasn't successfull, so maybe it was just a phase.

Chronicles of Amber is another great fantasy series which I would love to recommend, although the series wasn't finished and is left in a pretty huge cliffhanger, but yet the 10(shortish) books are all awesome and the world, that Zelazny has built is easily one of the best built world in fantasy scene.

Lenovo ThinkPad R61, 2 GB RAM, 1.7 duo-core, 80 GB HDD Windows 7 Laptop. It is still my second machine(or third, after my desktop/phone) and it is perfect for everything, including some python programming and writing/surfing. The keyboard quality of the machine is just insanely great, combined with the trackpoint.

I got it for 1300 BGN, which right now would be 650EUR and I bought it 8 years ago :) The only thing I have changed is the hinges once(cost me 20EUR). It has been the best investment for me and hopefully my desktop will be surpass it someday :)

Is there any way you can change it to link to a website, where we can see a preview, for example, and download it from there? Automatic download without any explaination is a really bad user experience.

The most important thing of these Chromebooks, at least for me, is the quality of the touchpad and keyboard, as if I ever get one they will be used mainly for typing stuff/chatting. There is a reason why I still us an almost decade-old Lenovo Thinkpad R61 as a reserve machine and something that I can use outside/on the go. Granted it is a big heavy but for me, it's worth it.

So, is there a chromebook, that can offer me a good quality of keyboard/touchpad?

Sadly I don't think there is one with a trackpoint, which would pretty much make these the perfect notebook for my use-case.

About that, I had the absolutely same issue, but I was hosting WordPress.

The first thing I was doing after setting a droplet was changing the password to something that was easier for me to remember, something along the line of 'qweasdzxc' but a bit harder combination. This was huge mistake on my part.

Apparantly my password was being bruteforced and once they get root access the DDOS attacks were being performed. What I did was delete the first droplet, starting a new one and just changing the default password by adding a few numbers after it. Then I went ahead and installed fail2ban(https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-prot...) + some iptables configurations thats are shown in that link. It practicly makes bruteforcing your droplet close to impossible(at least I think so). If you need any assistence you can contact me through my profile e-mail and I would gladly help you. Remember though you will need a clean droplet, because your system was already compromised and there are holes in it, then simply installing fail2ban will not be enough.
