Great game BTW!

What happens after 20K books? I am at about 13K books, and I haven't run into any issues yet. I make extensive use of virtual libraries in Calibre, and tags for organization.

I have to back up the others: just buy the microfreak, it is awesome. It was my first hardware purchase, and I am so glad I got it. They keep adding functionality via firmware updates, so recently they added sample playback to it, along with granular synthesis. I added a volca drum and a multi effect pedal to my hardware line up, so now I can head out to my local pub and jam out without needing a laptop with me, and the whole setup fits in an old messenger bag.

I found it on there. It seems to include ArXiV.

First attempt it didn't try to respond, just said it didn't know anything about sparrows or coconuts.

I asked it to retry, and got this:

One step closer to a dream I have: To describe scifi objects to Stable Diffusion, use the image to create a 3D object, print that object on my 3D printer. All on my laptop. (Well, I have SD running at home now, will have to see how the code for this runs when it is finally released)

I think the 04 Dec 2021 is Google's termination of the "H" account.

It's funny you mention this, as there is a big thread above that discusses his contribution to learning by reading, and his second point here is "Program. The best type of learning is learning by doing".

I don't understand this viewpoint. This type of data is being misused already. I think it would be a net positive for individuals to get their own data and use it for positive outcomes. It shouldn't be shared with the world at large, but when I've tracked certain info about myself, it has helped me immensely.

I can second this recommendation. Mapy.cz is especially awesome for me as I live in the Czech Republic. It has more updated satellite imagery for the CZ than Google, and shows all the hiking trails quite nicely. And the download function works pretty painlessly.

I think that is kinda normal for lawyers though. In the Czech Republic (I've been here 16 years and work with a lot of lawyers) it's normal for lawyers to be "contractors", very few are salaried.

In fact it's a funny rite of passage for most lawyers: after graduation they have to work for 3 years for a law firm before they are allowed to take the bar exam and become "real" lawyers. During this time they earn a salary. When they finally become "real" lawyers by passing the bar, they get fired. :) And immediately taken back on as contractors.

I prefer the idea behind the steelman technique (as opposed to a strawman argument): state the position of the person you disagree with so well they say "I wish I had put it that way!" then proceed to refute the central argument.

That, is fantastic.

This has been discussed a lot under the term "shadowbanning" in various places.

HN does this too, if enough people downvote a comment it will disappear from the conversation, but not from the posters viewpoint (and if you have showdead on, as a reader it shows up as lighter and lighter shades of grey).

The rational behind it is that if a spammer notices that their post/account has been banned, they can quickly spin up another one.

Apparently this is quite effective against spammers, (or used to be) but of course seems extremely unfair in the case of false negatives.

So when you say dishonest - how would you feel if the fine article was written by someone who said he had wasted 2 months on Medium writing posts that try to trick people into downloading malware before he realised that Medium had shadowbanned his account?

It is a language thing, even for native speakers :) That is why he went to a lot of trouble to define each term in the beginning, and kept referring back to his opening definitions throughout the talk:

Simple = One thing not 'mixed - linked - folded' with anything else. That's why he says it is objective - if you look at something and see it's mixed up with something else, it's not simple (in his terms, now it's complex - eg many things woven together)

Easy = Near to you. Near in as you know it already, or you have it already and so on.

His talk is for the dev pov, but even outside of dev, simple does not mean easy all the time.

For example, (and something I am struggling with right now) it is simple to lose weight - eat less calories than you burn each day. Simple.

But I can attest it is far from easy.

To respond to your first 4 questions:

Q1: Yes and No. From what I've seen (anecdata) an group of people working together ten to generate better ideas than one person could. The No comes from the fact that oftentimes one person came up an idea that they wouldn't have found without the other people.

Q2: Much better. Normally through 2 ways: first, defense of an idea make you have to improve it so that it gets accepted. second if the idea is collaborated upon the multiple feedbacks on forming the idea improves it.

Q3: My first knee jerk reaction to this question was that you need to limit the amount of people involved because communication is key: say 6-9 people. But on further thought, if your communications channels are set up well (forums, slack, IRC etc.), then you can go to the wisdom of the crowds, so maybe scale would work.

Q4: If the R&D lab is set up right, yes, you could get fundamentally better ideas, for various reasons: - facilities, collab, standing on the shoulders of giants (by this I mean building on what others have already built) etc.

Just NO. Artificial Stupidity (AS) will never be able to perform at the level of Actually Seen Stupidity (ASS). No matter how much you try to improve AS, God will always create a better ASS. You will always be limited by priors to create an AS, but ASS will evolve naturally, plus if God ever decides to use science and apply a Directed Acyclic Tangent (DAT) well, DAT ASS would be unbeatable.
