Most large Stripe clients split traffic. It doesn't make sense to have Stripe be a single point of failure if you're processing enough volume.

Doing even 10 on-site interviews is incredibly draining, especially if you're actually contributing at your full time job.

It's definitely not worth an engineer's time to resolve random customer issues, especially as Stripe has grown from ~500 people to ~7000 people.

Gone are the days where all the engineers were intimately familiar with every product and could offer you their tribal knowledge to resolve your silly issue.

Stripe is now a big corp. and there is no incentive for engineers to waste time on HN resolving customer feedback. There are proper channels that are better equipped to do so, namely the "clueless customer support agents" you speak of.

If your issue is truly some bug in the backend and not user error (which it usually is) it may eventually get surfaced to engineering.

SF rents have fallen significantly only in "undesirable" areas which are mostly offices and high rises where rents were exorbitant anyway.

My friend's shoebox apartment was $3300/mo which he renewed for another 13 months for $2200/mo with 2 months rent free.

You completely ignored all the other costs of owning a car: insurance, parking, maintenance.

You would also fail your driver's test in SF if you don't check for bikers when making a right turn. However, this isn't the case if you do your test elsewhere. SF has pretty good bike infrastructure and awareness.

I think the CoL-adjusted salary is pretty close, or actually better in Toronto.

This is a common misconception, and is promoted by a lot of tech companies in Toronto. It actually frustrates me whenever someone says that the compensation in the bay vs Toronto is the same after adjusting for CoL.

It's really not. You will end up with more absolute savings by working in the bay area, than you will in Toronto in a similar living situation.

As a Toronto native, who now lives in Silicon Valley (part of the brain drain from Waterloo), there is a reason why everyone leaves Toronto/Canada - the salaries are simply laughable when compared to the bay area.

The only reason you would stay in Toronto for a job in tech is if you wanted to stay close to family, or your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse.

Or, you just hate money and being at the center of the tech industry...
