I noticed the change because I wanted to persist Docker-related data between container instantiations on IncusOS. I couldn't understand why the custom volume I had mounted on /var/lib/docker didn't contain the downloaded images.

To keep both /var/lib/{containerd,docker} in sync, I use a single ZFS dataset ("custom filesystem volume" in Incus parlance) and mount subpaths inside the container:

incus storage volume create local docker-data
incus config device add docker docker disk pool=local source=docker-data/docker path=/var/lib/docker
incus config device add docker containerd disk pool=local source=docker-data/containerd path=/var/lib/containerd
There are other ways to achieve the same of course.

As a French national, I am surprised to discover we are topping the charts according to this analysis.

Does anybody know why that might be the case? What's the story of IPv6 deployment in France?

Funny how that kind of posts is now called "DevOps", while 10 years ago it was simply called "system administration" ;-)

Besides I fail to see any DevOps tenets in it, quite the opposite: a shell script at the bottom is little in the way of reliable automation.

To me this post reads more like someone relatively new to server management wanted to share their gathered tips and tricks, i.e. me 10 years ago when I started my self-hosting journey :-D

Yes, it would be a great idea to update the wording as there is no way to derive that from the current one.

Even being sympathetic, my thought reading this was "probably bad code quality/rotten core despite the great feature set".

You can have a "History/Background/Origin" section where you put exactly what you wrote in your comment and it will be fine.

This notwithstanding, thank you very much for developing this app! I will look into deploying it on my server, it will be of great help to people around me who often need manipulating PDFs but are not super technical!

That sounds a lot like a corrupted ISO/install media! I suggest verifying the checksums and trying a different USB drive.

Workaround: mount | grep -v snap

which you can record in an alias for easy access.

Not great, but you implement it once and are done with it.

A never mentioned but crucial issue with Cloudflare is that you are required to use their nameservers; you cannot change to use third party NS without transferring out.

Sources:

- https://developers.cloudflare.com/registrar/get-started/tran...:

All domains using Cloudflare Registrar must use Cloudflare DNS on a full setup. This also means that you cannot change to another DNS provider while using Cloudflare Registrar.

- https://blog.cloudflare.com/a-step-by-step-guide-to-transfer...:

We built our registrar specifically for customers who want to use other Cloudflare products. This means domains registered with Cloudflare can only use our nameservers. If your domain requires non-Cloudflare nameservers then we’re not the right registrar for you.

Another option I haven't seen mentioned yet is Spaceship.

I've moved four domains to them over the last few months away from Gandi, and am globally very satisfied.

It is a Namecheap spinoff to allow them to "cut the cruft" and restart fresh without having to deal with technical debt.

It has a few rough edges (the interface is not the clearest because it uses a different paradigm which takes some getting used to) and it doesn't support all the features of more established players (the biggest ones for me being the lack of an API and the absence of a raw/advanced zone editor), but they are consistently cheaper than Porkbun (for how long we'll see, but for now I've renewed my domains to their max to benefit from the current prices) and also have quick, efficient support via chat.

They have some enjoyably modern features, such as a DNS propagation map so you can follow in real time the propagation of your records' modifications to their servers across the globe.

All in all I'd say it's a great registrar for individuals and small ventures for whom price comes first, but the lack of an API will probably turn away more technical or demanding customers (which are probably already better served by the likes of Cloudflare). Of course, as others have alluded to you can also just use them as a registrar and define other nameservers.

Please, please pretty please, can we stop with the automatic switching to dark mode if the system uses a dark theme? Chrome UI elements and webpages serve fundamentally different purposes, and have wildly different readability needs!

At a minimum, please provide a way to switch between mode so that we can have some design granularity back.

Thanks!

Agreed.

I rarely post anything, but I checked to see if this one had been shared already as I think it is a truly well made mini documentary likely to interest many here. I'm amazed at the resources that were thrown at this project, as both narration and photography are quite breathtaking.

I'm also glad they didn't end on a moralist note/call to action (e.g. to send funds to alleviate this or that issue that cropped up during their research, like the road situation). It makes the whole thing feel even more genuine, the tale of an unadulterated curiosity that resulted in an epic quest. Thanks Vox

Buddhism did not evolve from Hinduism, nor even from its predecessor Brahmanism (calling the place it came from India is a also a bit of a stretch, but to a lesser degree):

* it may have actually been reacting first to Zoroastrianism and its idea that the absolute Truth and Lie can be known: https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691176321/gr...

* even if not, then it was either a reaction against Brahmanism (https://ahandfulofleaves.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/how-bud... (PDF)), or at the very least an independent development: https://www.academia.edu/63732680/Early_Buddhism_and_its_Rel...

We come to the conclusion that early Buddhism as a whole has developed independently from Brahmanism, with selective influences from Brahmanism and non-Vedic spiritual movements, altering and utilizing these influences for its own growth against its religious competition.

I'm an addict 4 years ago

I find it surprising not seeing this more prominently mentioned in the thread so I'll leave it here: GET HELP.

Seriously, what's the next step after acknowledging you have a disease (addiction being a well documented one)? GETTING HELP to treat it.

You just established your default-mode mind isn't amenable to your wellbeing: how do you see it helping to correct itself without any outside input?

As of this week, I just tipped back into sanity after 8 months being dysfunctional, another lapse into full avoidant coping mechanisms. It was certainly not the first time of my life, but I still got it wrong: I waited too long before reaching for help. As soon as I did the tide started stabilizing, and then it reversed. It took a couple of months (and leveraged the previously acquired experience) but it is obvious to me I'm back out of it now. Sleep, screen time, inner discourse... All indicators are in the green again.

Procrastination, addictions are symptoms hinting at other root causes. Believing that you can implement measures to keep it in check goes right against the very essence of the issue (as the article perfectly illustrates), and shows you don't have the correct grasp of the situation yet. You're leaving too much to chance, and I can tell you this is absolutely inefficient.

It is not the time to be picky and stick to one single truth® either: use a policy mix. The only required part is having someone TRAINED and EXPERIMENTED in dealing with your issue supervising your efforts. Someone you see in a regular fashion, each encounter creating another rung of the ladder that will get you out of this pit. Being in this kind of interaction tremendously helps with building the inner strength that up till now was lacking. They are your source of courage and support, the dam/dyke against which you fears, doubts and uncertainties will crash and subside. So make sure you feel you can trust them and stay clear from overly intrusive ones. But don't be too scared and just go to that first appointment.

Beyond that, anything goes, ritual/habitual practices especially (building up strength over time thanks to repetition). As long as you have that one external support providing strength and continuity to your efforts, you are bound to succeed. It will take some time, but the burden will get progressively lighter and the results more stable.

In the therapeutic frameworks department, I can strongly recommend EMDR, CBT and IFS (Internal Family System). If you can find someone in your area (or remote, you can actually self-administrate EMDR under the guidance of someone!) trained in one or several of those techniques that you get on well with, you're golden. This will most likely be the most efficient time-wise, but to a certain degree most things help, so start looking up directories of practitioners or local support group.

Take care everyone.

I was under the impression that they only requested an ID and a mean of payment, but after verification you are right, a proof of residency is also required for postpaid plans.

If you know someone in France, you may ask them to make a "solemn declaration" that you live at their address; then you only need provide their own proof of residency (people living with their parents routinely do so).

Tourist and prepaid SIM cards are still exempted and, depending on your case, can prove quite interesting.

I'll nention it for completeness sake: another possible solution, albeit a bit cumbersome, would be to get a regular contract-free plan but suspend it for the period you don't need it.

A cursory search indicates that both Orange and Bouygues (as well as their contract-free offshoots, Sosh and B&YOU respectively) still offer this as a paid option at 5€ and 7€ per month respectively.

This means you could get the plan appropriate for your needs, then suspend it (for at most 6 month per year it seems) and only reactivate it when you need it.

However since this procedure requires getting in touch with customer service, it should be reserved for people well versed in French :-)

For your specific use case, I'd say give Lebara mobile a shot.[0]

SIM card is free, you can top it up with a prepaid amount or do a one-month plan without renewing it, and I just checked their T&Cs relating to roaming and they are actually quite generous[1][2].

Besides, their website is (for the most part) translated in English due to their target demographic, so no need for full French fluency here!

Some good info in English on the French telco landscape can be found at [3].

Edit: missing word

Reading this thread, I am reminded of how cheap telco prices are in France: e.g. in 2020, fibre internet plans averaged between €26 and €28.35 (USD 28-30 at current rates) per month.[0]

Mobile plans are also on the cheap side, to the point of being competitive with many third world countries (for example, I wasn't that impressed with prices in Thailand in 2020 for comparable plans, only a 1-2€ difference with what I had at home).

This is getting to the point that I find myself often suggesting fellows from border countries open a line in France, just so that they can enjoy the "European roaming data envelope" that comes with most plans (i.e. several gigabytes are free to use from anywhere in Europe, and you can make calls and texts to other EU countries when abroad...) after realizing how expensive and suckish mobile plans are in their country (Belgium in this instance).

Many commenters here have already noted the strong connection between this study findings and common Buddhist-/mindfullness-based meditation instructions.

To me it was the concept of interoception which produced the stronger callback to Buddhist themes, in this case to the notion of "sixth inner sense" commonly referred to in Pali Buddhist scriptures:

In Buddhism, "mind" denotes an internal sense organ which interacts with sense objects that include sense impressions, feelings, perceptions and volition.[0]

I have always found this sixth sense organ a welcome –and even necessary– addition to the regular Western list of senses, as without it it is impossible to account for the bountiful nature of our inner experiences (and our perception of them, which evidently foregoes the five other physical senses). I am really glad to see we have a somewhat established (if not very well-known) comparative concept to use in the scientific framework of understanding.

The "distraction-free" bit reminded me of a similar tool I used a couple of years ago, Ghostwriter [0]. Differences between the two AFAICT:

- use of Pandoc as a converter is only optional in Ghostwriter, and I don't know how well it is integrated

- semi-official MacOS support: Ghostwriter requires you to build the app from source (maybe its authors didn't want to notarize the app?) and it has a few quirks apparently[1].

- more features for the more mature Ghostwriter.

In any case good to see more choices in this space, cross-platform Markdown word processors with Pandoc support were a rare occurrences a couple of years ago!

You should absolutely *avoid* using this vaccine _unless_ you have been previously (and provably) infected by one of the strains of dengue. Unless you want to actually *increase* your risk of doing a hemorrhagic form. Seriously don't do it, people have died over it.

If by best you mean "most efficient space/quality ratio while maintaining correct performance and compatibility", then I'd argue HEVC/H.265 for video and Opus for audio are strong contenders for the current "best". They provide nice upgrades in efficiency compared with their predecessors, are still generally compatible (while nowhere near AVC/H.264 and MP3/AAC, their decoding is available on major platforms with increasing hardware support for HEVC), and their most used encoders (x265 and opusenc) have sane defaults and CLI.

However, that strongly depends on your use case: where are the files going to be played (which hardware/software, how old, which OS, what battery requirements...)? What are the media to be encoded/decoded like (screencapture, Blu-Ray, voice or acoustic concert...)?

AVC/H.264 is still the king of compatibility and speed/performance, albeit at a lower quality or higher file size. MP3/AAC, depending on the encoder and parameters used, still do a good job and are faster (better optimized) than Opus.

VP9 (video) is kind of niche and complex to use properly, although it is well supported due to its use YouTube. AV1 and its proprietary counterpart are not there yet, although I have a few files encoded (by others) with it and they play mostly fine, but it's on recent hardware/software and it can still be pretty iffy (like e.g. fast forwarding). But the promise is huge!

Re: containers, don't bother with AVI unless on a veeery old stack; go with MKV whenever you can (most flexible) or MP4 when you cannot (most compatible? Especially with proprietary vendors à la Apple).

So you know, like with cipher suites and other things I'd say you have two sets, the "modern" one with HEVC+Opus encapsulated in MKV, or the "compatible" one with AVC+AAC in MP4. I always go with the first one because my requirements allow it and I prefer the space/quality efficiency over anything else, but depending on the use case you may have to resort to the compatible set.
