I used 2 step verification for my gmail. Our cell phone operator cannot receive international sms (I know, that sucks), so I used my home phone, so every time I logged in to my gmail I received a call from google voice robot to tell me the pin number. It sounded perfect at first, but when I started to actually use it, I noticed everytime I needed to login to gmail, I wasn't home. I'd call my parents so they could say me the pin or use the backup codes that google provided me with. That was so uncomfortable I had to turn it off.

I can't help thinking about Google Wave :)

But when pressing some UI element gets you to other apps like browser, facebook etc, that Android back button behavior is what makes my life easier.

My internet connection is pretty bad. The thing is, whole country is in the same shit. Guess what, google plus doesn't even load in here. I mean, facebook(even through proxy since its blocked by govt) and others are loading perfectly, maybe with some delay, but g+ is not functioning at all. All google services are suffocating with js/ajax/whothehellknowwhat stuff, that making it almost impossible to use them if you are not at some lightning speed connection. Uhh, so pissed off!

Snakes have bad impact on birds as well. Maybe not adults, but the eggs. I believe there is always a bigger fish in the ocean, everything is just a matter of equilibrium and its rules of self-control. Humans and rats probably are the only species that ignore those rules.

Not exactly their niche. They might hunt for insects, but it won't be enough in terms of energy acquired. So probably they will reduce in population until rats' population will restore back.

And its good to keep rats busy. They won't wander as freely as they do now and hence eat less insects.

There are always big predators at top of the biological food-energy chain. They are few in numbers. Anyways, I believe populations of cats and rats will fluctuate. Increase in cats will cause decrease in rats and then subsequent decrease in cats. Like phase difference between sine and cosine wave graphs.

I believe introducing some small wild cat population would be a right thing to do, tho I would like to hear opinions of experts.

They should import cats. Thats how they got rid from enormous rat population after Leningrad (current St.Petersburg, Russia) blockade during the WW2. That would be a natural way of annihilating rat population(passive killing).

I agree with you. Here in Turkmenistan mp3 market is taken almost entirely by iPod. In contrast, pc market is almost entirely (99.9%) windows. I can't show you official statistics, but I am sure the deviation from my estimations is insignificant.

People love windows in here, they are very eager to try new versions of windows (Majority of them don't even know that something else exists). Many companies with annual revenue above 1$mln usd use Excell as a primary work station. Nobody heard about Silverlight, MS Courier tablet (even me) and other "failed" MS products. Microsoft is regarded as a safe-bet. Thats what keeps many people from buying macbooks.

Thats said, I believe that majority of the world (those who don't follow tech news) think of Microsoft as they think of Windows- stable, reliable, familiar, indispensable product (company in case of Microsoft itself).

I agree with you! Working with children I realized how amazingly fast they are able to pick up anything you teach them. I wish I had someone to teach me coding at age of 8 or something. Its just amazing seeing kids do stuff in a weeks I myself could only do after months or years of learning programming

I ususally use lynda.com resources. I also have problems with teaching something beyond html/css, but usually with enough repetitions and assignments students finally "get it". Brightest students of mine are the ones who really interested in programming. So, in order to make it interesting, I tell them about what sites like Google and Facebook are programmed like, how their best video games work, how they can make a "simple" version of their facebook like social site. They seem to get motivated by those talks of mine :)

I always think of this. Not because I have kids, but because I teach children coding(web development). I have 2 groups, 13-14 years olds and 15-16 years olds. The younger group learns everything twice as faster. I plan to teach my kinds basic logic, maths, chess and after coding starting from age 4.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. I do agree with you, and maybe what I was trying to say and what you are saying are different things.

I couldn't find the exact citation from the book, but I will try to write down what I remember.

Colvin explains that with an example of Tiger Woods. He says that Tiger never subconsciously hit the ball. When he starts the movement of the arm to hit the ball and someone from the background screams, he can stop his arm halfway, and then after he is no longer distracted, he hits again.

Normally, when a mediocre player starts moving his arm in order to hit the ball, he no longer able to stop halfway through the action of arm swinging. And usually he would miss, because of concentration loss. He addresses that kind of behavior due to automation of some actions. He says that after some action has gotten automated, person performing it has almost no control over it. He also gives example of the professional car drivers and average drivers. Average driver will not be able to control the dangerous situation on the road due to the fact that his actions are almost automated. While professional drivers are able to see the situation much earlier, and steer and break more efficiently, because they are in better control of situation due to less automation of driving action (Less habit more conscious control).

Edit: Regarding programming, I noticed, the more code I write subconsciously, the more stupid bugs I get. Sometimes I write mysql_real_escape_string() instead of mysql_fetch_array() and then wonder whats gone wrong. I even look at the line with this bug for several minutes, until I stop, look away for a bit, and try to switch from autopilot to manual mode. After I fire up my real brain, I spot the bug in seconds, and have a stupid smile for a half second or so :)

On the other hand, in the "Talent is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin it says, that any task thats gotten automated (on subconscious level) is not getting you better or even bringing you one step down.

Simply putting, if you are coding without stretching yourself, if you don't put much thought in it and do it almost subconsciously you are not learning anything.

He suggest to avoid acquiring habits for the things you want get better at. He supports his words with real life examples. I could relate it to myself, and found his techniques useful in my life. Overall it is a nice read.
