This is unfortunate. Yes the company maximized their IPO take. But at the end of the day the ones who got screwed were the retail investors who bought into the media hype. This will hurt tech IPOs in general.

I should explain further. I started out with Dropbox and am almost at the limit. I don't have disposable income (startup founder). So I started looking for alternatives - that's when I discovered Skydrive.

PS. Have you tried Zumodrive - it's almost exactly like Dropbox.

This assumes that SV has only web and software startups. Certain kinds of companies (biotech, telecom, etc.) do need VC, and these companies are built to IPO. That won't change.

Yes, if you want to do a web 2.0 startup, then the valley is the place to be. No doubt!

Although I then think of Flickr, Plenty of Fish, Club Penguin, etc. and realize that this is not necessarily true.

How many VC-backed companies actually do well enough for the founders to get rich? Not that many - you're better off bootstrapping and then flipping the co. for a $ amount that is in the few million. And I think the Valley is the worst place to bootstrap due to the high cost of living.

And don't get me started on the high cost of getting health insurance. You're better off in Toronto.

Money changes everything; People, relationships, principles, slogans, etc. to name a few.
