This is a great idea. There's a lot of possibilities in tools/services which allow creators to monetize easily. Do you think there is an opportunity to allow sharing outside of Instagram? I.e licensing photos for use in articles, blogs, etc? Or is part of the advantage here that Instagram is a walled garden of sorts, where it's more difficult to steal a user's image?

Yeah, I wrote something that stores data to Flickr last summer: https://github.com/namwen/hoardr . I kind of had a reason but it was more for the enjoyment of getting it to work.

When I was younger, one of my dad's best friends was a hacker / electrical engineer who worked primarily with Moogs. He would service Moogs for very well known musicians if they were in the area, but was more well known for his modifications. I remember one story my dad would tell about some new keyboard they released, and within a few days he had modified it to makes hundreds more sounds than it was already capable of. Cool guy.

Not a freshman but a transfer student. I'm absolutely taking it again as soon as possible. In the meantime I'm going to keep attending the lectures for no credit and learn on my own through Khan Academy. I'm actually confident I can complete the course fine, but I was distracted with other things when the course started and missed some important grades. Thanks for the advice.

This is the exact reason I dropped Calc this semester. My math background already sucks and I fucked up early and fell behind fast. Makes more sense to not fail and learn on my own before trying again.

Yeah, I've visited websites for years that I felt were very well designed in regards to being open and having a nice amount of whitespace. Seeing the same site on someone else's computer is a bit heartbreaking.

I had an idea for something similar awhile back. I love learning about places I haven't been before and I especially enjoy looking at those places on a map.

I'm sure you could manage to put something together with Google Images. Perhaps you could even do something with the images Google has tied in with areas on Google Maps.

Yeah, I'm dumbfounded in more ways than one. Here we have a group of young guys supposedly selling a mysterious powder with no ingredients under the name Soylent of all things. Then I come to the comments and virtually no one has questioned this product as even being real and is instead arguing over whether it's a viable business / safe.

I have to agree with you. I only post my "Art" photography on flickr and all the people I follow do the same. Seeing this huge mashup of all the varying styles and works together is really terrible. It's just not a nice way of presenting photography.

It's pretty incredible. I can't imagine many 22 year olds turning down one hundred million, let alone one billion.

I'm really surprised to see this comment on Hacker News of all places. I would imagine the commenters here would embrace with open arms a period where thy can stop working and really do the things they want. Really do anything. All of those projects you've been kicking around. Do that. Its' really not far off from what you said about working part time for the challenge, but instead you're working for yourself.

Yeah that hits home. I build Wordpress websites daily and also manage a number of them which are years old and I had no hand in making. Pressing that update button on some of these sites really is like russian roulette.

Wasn't this mostly stopped in NY when the Exchange set up a server building and allowed firms equal access? They had been buying up the real estate around the exchange for amounts much high than the property's value and it was becoming a bit of a problem. Now they are all in the same building and everyone has the exact same amount of cable running from their server to the exchange.

Those example are really unrelated though. One is a law against unfairly ruling out potential employees, the other is about what to charge a driver who has a statistically higher chance of being in an accident. I agree that the insurance companies should take into account a driver's other assets(?) besides age, but it probably shouldn't be law.
