In the standups, you may need to probe to understand what they actually accomplished and whether they are on track to finish the sprint.

Look at positions that ask for prototyping engineers. The goal is to get it working anyway possible. You're not going to bogged down by larger programming concepts, reusability, performance, etc. Try fast growing startups with the culture of shipping fast.

I went from working at a large company to writing software for a startup and had the unlearn a lot of these concepts. Since you don't care for these concepts anyways, you'll probably be a better prototype engineer than I ever was. Also, look at related fields that require scientific programming using tools such as matlab as they also (mostly) focus more on getting the solution working rather than how it works.

What you want to do is ponder over how common functionality around you must work - if you can't come up with a reasonable solution, it's time to google it and learn it. If you can come up with a reasonable solution, google to check if you're correct.

And I would be careful about the "should" vs. "want". Thinking about it that way will just never make you happy because you'll be always wondering about the path you didn't take. I don't know what the answer is but it's just something to be aware of.

Personally, I think about "should"s. Only after that do I think about "wants". Then I start by doing the wants and try to see how it would merge with a should. Because someone once said, "Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

Also, find better recruiters.

Yes absolutely. Managing a manager is hard. Objectives and accountability are easy to get muddled because their tasks are all people based. I am still looking for a practical and resource-efficient way to manage.

Manager jobs are significantly more stressful and harder to train for than individual contributors. And my personal opinion is that good managers are much rarer than individual contributors.

To me, it sounds like a personal assistant that can automatically reply for you to fairly complex emails. We get SO MUCH email, maybe this will actually help us manage all that.
