I get your point that in modern society, you can invest in an ETF in a few clicks, but in a way, owning your own infrastructure is simpler. Transform the sun into energy reserves with parts you can buy, understand, and install yourself from wholesalers.

A power company is opaque, carries overhead, and requires complexity to serve at an institutional level. ETFs have a similar complexity/abstraction to their customers.

I transferred my number from Mint Mobile to Visible 8 months ago or so. I tried to at least. They initiated the number transfer before accepting payment from me. Their iOS app was bugged and their web app had no way to pay. I engaged support and they escalated to engineering. Still had no phone number or cell access for 3 days, with an upcoming trip planned. Ended up getting them to transfer it to US Mobile which has been fine. Probably works a lot of the time but it’s a shitshow.

shoutout AUR, I’m trying arch for the first time (Omarchy) and wasn’t planning on using the AUR, but realized how useful it is when 3 of the tools I wanted to try were distributed differently. AUR made it insanely easy… (namely had issues with Obsidian and Google Antigravity)

PII isn’t limited to SSNs. By your logic, First name can’t be PII, and last name with no accompanying info wouldn’t be PII. Different types of data have different risk profiles. When multiple records about an individual are collected the risk grows exponentially. Location is absolutely PII when combined with other risky data, like license plate.

What % of the time do you think the die-hard gamers live a healthy lifestyle? I’m thinking it’s higher than my knee jerk reaction, like 40-50%, but an important consideration. Of course people define “healthy” differently too, but obesity and mental health crises have objectively grown and correlate with rising technology use.

+1, I have a c4ai docker container + brave search MCP (2000 queries/mo free!) running on my laptop so I can ask claude code to do research similar to GPT deep research, but I config to ignore robots.txt since it's a one-off instance collecting data on my personal behalf, not a service (At least that's how I justify it)

Even so, Homebrew Cask has long decided it will not be an active gatekeeper (macOS already has one) and users are expected to know about the software they are installing. This means we will not always remove casks that link to these apps, in part because there is no clear line between useful app, potentially unwanted program, and the different shades of malware—what is useful to one user may be seen as malicious by another.

So there might be pull requests, but Brew's official stance is that they do not actively moderate casks for malware. I guess there's something built into the MacOS packaging step that help mitigate the risk, but I don't know much about it outside playing w/ app development in XCode.

Agreed that it's a bit funny given the context and no community-managed package manager should be 100% trusted.

That said, I think rg is pretty well known to linux daily-drivers and they just wanted to share something quickly for powerusers who want to check their workspaces quickly. Probably better to just instruct n00bs to use grep than install a whole cli tool for searching

Come to think of it, I wonder if a 2-phase attack could be planned by an attacker in the future: Inject malware into a package, flood guidance with instructions to install another popular tool that you also recently compromised... lol

Good point. Has me thinking: In any field, over time, there's R&D for it to become more effective. How this progression might apply to marketing:

1. Printed ads, newspapers, billboards, magazines -- You can explain your product and show a picture of what it looks like to demonstrate the value to customers

2. Television ads, black and white -- We can demonstrate the value to customers so well!

3. Wait a minute, if we put music in the TV ads, the songs get stuck in peoples' heads, this is good for our brand

4. Color TV Ads -- We have all the previous benefits but can get more attention with color!

5. We can target regional TV ads in different parts of the country!

6. Oh, we can target any ad based on demographics on social media? This will be effective

7. Ok, now we want to keep targeting ads, but we're gonna A/B test multiple versions of the ads in real time to maximize effectiveness

8. Ok, I need to maximize effectiveness of this ad, let me generate an AI mockup of the product I'm selling to create an illusion of the lifestyle my brand represents

My point is, marketing has been optimized over time and will continue to optimize for profit in the future, and the result has been a divergence in the actual goal of marketing: We've gone from "Demonstrate the value of our product" to "Create an illusion of our lifestyle".

Creator here. This was inspired by a trivia game called Fallacy Quiz, but I kept thinking about how narcissists construct arguments to be circular, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. The gimmick of this game is that you can't really "beat" it, because the main way to beat a narcissist in real life is to disengage.

The game presents 20 random scenarios from different manipulation tactic categories (DARVO, gaslighting, strawman arguments, etc.). No matter which response you choose - logical, emotional, gray rock, or boundary-setting - your stress level increases and the manipulator escalates predictably.

Coded in vanilla JS as a single HTML file with Claude Code and elbow grease. Hosted on S3/CloudFront. Has sounds, basic animations, and gives you a breakdown of how you answered. Also links to DV resources across multiple English-speaking countries.
