There's no pride, no joy, just productivity.

This is exactly what bothers me about the present moment. Not that the pride of craftsmanship is everything, but dialing it down to zero with extreme pressure to stay that way is a bit sad.

But we’ve clearly gone through this with other mediums before, perhaps someday people will appreciate hand written code the way we appreciate hand carved wood. Or perhaps we were all wasting time in this weird middle ground in the march of progress. I guess we’ll find out in 5-15 years.

On the one hand, totally reasonable to ask “what does speaking English have to do with building airplanes”.

On the other, the vast majority of technical and scientific literature worldwide is English language based. As is all air traffic control. So, reasonable chance the maintenance manuals are in English.

That said I am with you on disliking the implicit xenophobia in the question.

There’s some real mistakes on the part of your direct manager here. It sounds like they have not been properly managing expectations between you and their boss. Out of curiosity how many direct reports do they have and how long have they been managing?

I would not be surprised to hear you’re reporting to someone who until recently was a just an IC and is still learning how to manage.

It was really poorly worded and confused me too until I saw the dates on the articles linked out.

No one can require you to stay on though, you’ll either have sufficient equity or bonus potential to make up for the lower salary, a salary adjustment, or you’ll just walk for a market salary.

So yeah people totally lose their health care when they lose their job. Typically it runs through the month and then you’re on your own. You can by law keep buying the same plan at full price (employers typically pay between 50-80 and sometimes up to 100% of the premium).

However, when you get sick that rate doesn’t go up, so there’s no incentive from your employers standpoint to fire you when sick. Because of the “losing coverage” part it’s still extra shitty when they double up (cancer plus being fired sounds pretty awful).

Obamacare notably created markets for folks not receiving health insurance through work to purchase it directly (in addition to subsidies for low to middle income folks to do so, and several regulatory changes around other parts of the system), but that basic system wasn’t fundamentally altered and has been more or less how the US has done things since world war 2.

Fun bonus fact, employer based insurance was first offered as a workaround for world war 2 era wage controls.

Isn’t that kind of his conclusion too though? It matters in as much as we’re less likely to see new general purpose public clouds come into play, but he didn’t seem to predict there was no more room for change in the industry, just that were unlikely to see those incumbents toppled from certain foundational positions in the ecosystem.

It’s proof they can actually make money on the thing, which matters because it sounds it’s soemthing people like enough to pay for so as they grow the user base, they’ll grow revenue. However, keep in mind they still didn’t get in to YC after changing it, so it may not have chances things that much.

Fairly straightforward in some languages (Ruby for instance).

Lucy (https://startwithlucy.com) | San Francisco, CA | Full-time | Onsite | Hiring for mobile and web

We're hiring engineers at our headquarters in San Francisco to help build out our product to helping women and men have happier, healthier pregnancies, and smoother transitions into parenthood and back-to-work again.

We've been growing rapidly and raised from top tier VCs. You’ll work on a small, tight-knit team to build out our core products and have a large amount of influence in our technical direction. We are more pragmatic than dogmatic but take pride in our craft as engineers.

Our stack is django / postgres for backend and internal admin tools and react native for our family app. We're looking for generalist full stack engineers who want to build out products quickly.

I'm the hiring manager and can be reached here or matt [at] startwithlucy [dot] com.

Yeah Harvard doesn't use the same numbering systems as most other universities. It's up to the department if I recall and for the case department anything in the sub 100s were intro, 100-200 was for undergrad classes but could be taken for credit by students getting a masters degree and anything over 200 was graduate level (though open to motivated undergrads).

That means 52% of Republicans don't strongly support it, and Trump was elected by a mix of Republicans, independents and even Some Democrats.

Absolutely! There's some folks who aren't going to be persuaded and love what Trumps doing, but there's a large group of people who tried to convince themselves this was just campaign rhetoric, or who just disposed Hillary, or who are conservative Christians and pro life but who do missionary work and help refugees. Collapsing anyone who supported Trump into "deplorables" won't help change their minds next time an election comes up. Convincing them that he's dangerous and doesn't represent their values however very well might.

I think those are the people he wants to ultimately affect, but it's important to remember that attracting and retaining the best talent is one of the main things on the mind of the CEOs of top tech companies. Hearing from employees of prospective employees about the importance of this absolutely will impact their thinking.

Yeah it's interesting how it can go the other way if you're in a solidly conservative district too (I used to live in austin ehich thanks to some ridiculous gerrymandering has very conservative congressional representation). Thanks for calling even if you aren't convinced they'all listen though, I think it's important to try and change minds and that's the place to start.

Fair enough, I do think the quantification argument is sound. I certainly don't mean to discourage anyone from contacting their elected officials, I just want to highlight the fact a lot of us live in areas that are both solidly more progressive and solidly more wealthy than the median county in the us.

How effective is calling local congress members if you live in an area with a strong progressive majority such as the Bay Area. Not that we shouldn't voice our option to our represented officials but I suspect in some ways it's redundant whereas things like raising money for national organizations may be more impactful.
