TLDR; CryptPad is a 6 years old FOSS project developed by XWiki SAS, a french company who has been doing open-source for 17 years. It aims to replace proprietary, unencrypted services like Google Docs, etc. It runs directly in the browser and the code is licensed under AGPLv3.

I happen to be somewhat disappointed by Signal recently (crypto payments bundled in app, shady open-source practices…) but to this day I cannot find any viable alternative as a full-featured messaging application (and don’t tell me about Matrix ecosystem). So when these financial contributions features were added I decided to subscribe for 5€ per month. If you value Signal services I encourage you to do the same!

It became slow and unresponsive over the months, eating more and more memory. I'm currently trying the community supported ARM version and it's a relief.

The community already done that: https://github.com/dennisameling/signal-desktop (working on Windows & Apple ARM). Still, I think it's a shame that all the work was done, ready to be merged (needed PRs were open) and Signal devs just shut the door on it.

They aren’t even close to Digital Ocean in terms of quality of service, support, performances or documentation. They are more like OVH, another french provider.

A lot of software limitations of their products aren’t documented, an example: don’t expect to put more than 40k files in one single object storage bucket. It’s written nowhere and when you’ll start encountering strange errors with your apps you’ll have to deal with the support team. First you need to pass the triage level where people have no clue about whatever is technical, then after a few days you will go higher in the chain and finally be redirected at someone in charge of the production who will announce you that kind of limitation.

Disclaimer: I’ve been a customer since the very start of Scaleway (attracted by the low prices), then got dissatisfied a lot and asked my account being deleted last week.

You are completely true about China, and the bipartisan cooperation Switzerland is working on must cease. But alas, it’s not the trend. The Swiss government is even inviting China police investigators to come over and lead their investigations on China nationals directly on Swiss land. The whole situation is a shame, economics are indeed the reason behind all this.
