Course Hero | Redwood City, CA | ONSITE | VISA | Full-time

Course Hero is changing education by building a global community of students, the largest digital library of study materials, and innovative machine learning technology to support both learning and teaching.

We are a top-250 traffic site that practices continuous deployment.

Our engineering teams release code every day to millions of people, so we're looking for people who can embrace challenges, build new features, and iterate quickly. Our projects are big - many terabytes of data and millions of users around the world - but our team is small, so you’ll see projects from start to finish and work closely with product managers and designers to ensure successful results.

We're hiring for many roles:

* Staff Engineer, Front-end (React, MVC, etc.)

* Senior Engineer, Search (Elasticsearch, ML, etc.)

* Senior Engineer, Back-end (PHP, Symfony, Microservices, etc.)

* Senior Machine Learning Engineer (TensorFlow, etc.)

* Principal Data Engineer

And many more!

Contrary to what many people think, few of us have managers who can consistently and successfully lay out the optimal career path and help us achieve it. I'd say there are three main reasons:

1. It's really hard to do.

2. Few people have themselves been trained on management.

3. Faced with 1 and 2, people focus on their own, more familiar personal deliverables.

Therefore, if you want things to change, you'll probably have to make some specific suggestions. And to do that, you should do some homework. I highly recommend starting with Managing Humans by Michael Lopp (http://www.amazon.com/Managing-Humans-Humorous-Software-Engi...) or maybe The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz (http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Thing-About-Things-Building/dp/00...). Spend an hour or two with each book and you'll have a better idea what can be done, and why.

What you're finding is that working as both a full-time manager and full-time engineer is very difficult, borderline impossible. Eventually, you'll have to choose. An increasing number of small companies are starting to understand this reality, and allow their top people to grow into either technical leadership or management leadership roles. Expecting both, simultaneously, is not realistic.

Like any other set of knowledge, the real skill lies on knowing when and how to apply it. When asked to describe our process, I summarize it as "minimalist Scrum." To us, that means using some aspects of Scrum (small team sizes, prioritized work backlogs, and daily standups) and ignoring others (anything with the word "sprint" in it, pre-planned release cycles, and velocity estimation/tracking). Our culture is more built around continuous deployment.

We've found the process that works well for us, and I encourage everyone to be thoughtful and consider many approaches as they try to do the same.

I love seeing quantitative attempts to study social dynamics, even if it's tricky to extrapolate them to other environments. There definitely seems to be a growing research consensus that people with emotional intelligence--sensitive to others, good at team-building--are more important than previously thought, especially relative to, say, technical skill.

One thing I'm very curious about, with respect to this study's findings, is the relationship with similarly-convincing research about the important of private offices and minimizing distractions. The two aren't totally exclusive, of course, but there is at least some tension:

For example, we now know that 35% of the variation in a team’s performance can be accounted for simply by the number of face-to-face exchanges among team members. We know as well that the “right” number of exchanges in a team is as many as dozens per working hour, but that going beyond that ideal number decreases performance.

That style of interaction does sound a lot easier to facilitate in an open-plan office.

My experience at Startup School was a true epiphany, though not in the way most people would expect.

After hearing founder stories directly from people like Brian Chesky and Andrew Mason, and hearing what they tried and went through in the years before anyone heard of their "overnight" success, I finally understood that I'm truly not like them. Selling cereal to keep things running on a shoestring budget? I would have given up by then, as would have many rational people.

The experience helped me appreciate that the role I love, and have thrived in ever since, is in a small startup (but post-money) where the challenges are growth, innovation, and building a strong foundation for the future, both in terms of technology and people.

I highly recommend attending Startup School.

only in the early years of YC did we require an answer right away.

I think the post would be stronger if it acknowledged this fact.

I think it's wise to consider a startup job independent of any possible financial windfall. Even if there's no exit, will you be glad to have worked there? Will you develop skills and be exposed to opportunities that you're looking for?

In some ways, this suggests startups are a better choice for people who have worked long enough to know what they're trying to accomplish at the next stage of their career. (I don't doubt that some college grads know this already.)

Andy Rachleff has great advice on people looking to start a career in startups: Don't make a brand-new startup your first job--rather, look for a mid-sized, growing company, where you'll learn some valuable skills and set yourself up for better opportunities in the future.

https://blog.wealthfront.com/hot-mid-size-silicon-valley-com...

The list is getting a bit out of date, and he's writing for business students, but I think the advice is very sound for engineers as well. If I could do it over again, I would have tried to find a similar path.

I'd say the best way to have a great career is to choose a job where you get to be with other people you really like, respect, and can learn from. This network is how you'll find the best new opportunities in the future, and where you'll be able to recruit people into whatever you're working on.

Optimize for having the best coworkers (and manager) you can find. You can never start too soon.

Is there any published research on what CS majors or people working as software engineers in their 20s are doing at age 30, 40, 50, 60?

As many has observed, the numbers don't make sense for everyone to be a manager or CTO.

I definitely sense anxiety when people talk about their future - "I know I don't want to still be coding in 10 years" - but I wonder if that's partly an incomplete picture of what others are doing.

Since the title is linkbait-y, I'll share that after reading it, I think the article boils down to these two quotes:

"The bottom line is that although there are holes in our knowledge, there is no concrete evidence of any chemical risks of sunscreen at typical doses."

"In the case of melanoma, the more dangerous form of skin cancer, there’s no data that tells us whether sunscreen works."
