Unfortunately at this stage of the pandemic, most peoples minds are made up about everything. There's enough refusenics that the virus will find a reservoir to do its mutating thing, so I think no matter what sensible people say its just a moot point.

can some mod do something about this user "dang"? he seems to crapflood every discussion I try to read with these stupid judgemental comments and never contributes to the discussions, doesn't hacker news employ moderators of any sort? I know I'm a new user and don't have enough "karma" or whatever to downvote but this guy is one of the most irritating and useless commenters I've ever seen, and that comes from someone who has used reddit and slashdot for quite a bit.

I don't disagree. I will add that the "system level" is itself legislated by elected officials. Its an interesting thing, like a series of games where the winner gets to redefine rules for the next match in the series. At some point the game can become rigged.

In the USA we're just predisposed to elect bad people, a significant segment of the voting public think electing a game show host is a good move, this sort of voting population will have effects at all levels.

I think there can absolutely be incompetent governments, like say an idiot country that puts a game show host in office.

I think its ok, I'd start with hypotheses and when I can, I would test them, and in the absense of a spare planet and mammalian species as your test tube, the only thing I can think of as a proxy for the proverbial test tube would be what statistics we can find.

I feel sorry for trump and I hope he at least has some fun with this project, I mean its not every day that you get the chance for a term or two in the highest office of the USA and then to be ridiculed for the dumpster fires that resulted has to grate on the guy. Think of it, he's not getting any younger and it has to be pretty clear even to him that he's generally considered to be a failure, especially given his embarrassing behavior post election.

I hope enough folks join up that it becomes a positive experience for him, with his last attempt it was obvious even to him nobody was interested.

I've had plenty of flu shots and never got a VAERS handout but I got a handout for the covid shot, I'm betting VAERS saw lots of use with the covid shot that wasn't common with other vaccines, so that has to influence the numbers.

I guess if you see more coverups than the average person does then you'll probably form different opinions than the average person.

Also, the "freedom marches" include many Q types I'm sure, and if folks think the Q types are reasonable people, well you know...

Glad it was still dark enough to read, I had no idea some lumps of bitcoin are worth less because of a wallet they touched. Thats an incredible flaw, and really a big downside of bitcoin.

chiming in, I had a feeling that the article and the comments here would contain some jewels and both have exceeded expectations.

I love stackoverflow, use it all the time often from generic goggle searches, and I don't even have an account, its just that useful of a site. I suspect I would probably not answer very many questions due to others simply having better answers than me.

so there's an LED that lights when its recording, I wonder how soon folks are going to tape over it or something so they can just go trolling for meme worthy footage without their subjects knowing. I wonder if there is some legal problems with disabling the LED?

I remember building one program that was pretty big and was surprised that no warnings were issued, I seem to think it was postgresql but I'm not sure. I'll have to try another build sometime.

In my rinkydink c programs I try to understand the warnings and fix them, I do recall that they used to build clean but new gcc versions would note new issues that had not been flagged before.

I played with ircii scripting, one time I made a bot (probably copied some script from somewhere) that would op folks with a hardcoded irc usermask list.

I then ran one with just a mode that would op anybody upon joining and then when I'd run into folks who were all into bots, I was like "yeah I have one you can borrow for your channel," and then they'd invite it and op the thing, and then it would start opping everybody who joined and the prior owner of the channel would get all ornery about it.

lol irc was like the crackhouse of the internet to me.

I think as long as people can't recognise theft of publishing rights, it will be difficult to have any sort of sensible conversation about it.

I read something pretty interesting recently that pretty much convinces me that the folks at the top get there by luck rather than merit. Obviously I'm sure that they themselves would disagree but I'm talking about them, not to them.

The US got to the position it is in the 20th century by luck, we discovered a new world with wealth to exploit, took the country from the indigenous, then had a stack of decades with slavery, then took that momentum into the world wars, coming out on top into the boom years when our competitors were saddled with rebuilding ruins.

If we're in decline then its our own undoing, heck we pretty much inherited the best deal in the world and pissed it away.

I love HBO's selections, often I'll see content advertised as available on HBO and its def something I want to watch, so I'll go pick it up somewhere. Very good selections.

I think the most economical way of thinking about it is that we're stuck with a percentage of refuseniks and have to deal with them continuing to spread covid.

I am of a certain population that is more succeptable, and I just accept that there are people who would welcome my death from covid if it would save them from the slightest inconvenience.
