I understand that in practice, few cases of voter fraud are detected, and that in practice there are all sorts of mechanisms in place to make sure people aren't taking advantage.

In a vacuum absolutely. But in this country we have a rich history of voter suppression. And requiring IDs is a way to do that in practice (as you mention). So it becomes a matter of balancing what would be the ideal (everyone has an id easily, and we can thus require it for voting) to the reality (requiring it will lead to a magnitude more people wrongly disenfranchised than fraud prevented).

I have been on pixel my last few phones (currently on 6a). While I've done 3p roms on my phones before, I'm not as interested in tinkering with them anymore.

This is the main driver for me in considering a switch to Apple. I almost did the last time I needed to upgrade, but the trade-in offers were good enough that I didn't. It doesn't feel like an upgrade though, I lost the back fingerprint scanner that worked great, but at least I get the security updates for a bit longer.

It really feels like the first gadget I have gotten in a long time that continues to delight. It's the rare gadget that keeps updating the better.

Gadget wise I've been really delighted with the new Playdate console in a way I haven't been by technology in a long time. It's simple but so much of it is designed with care, and the third party game ecosystem is really taking off. I'm a few weeks into the game release schedule, and they are fun, but I'm spending an inordinate amount of time on some of the third party games.

Just because the Federal Gov of the US does this does not mean that the states have to as well.

States can choose to stay on Standard, or go back and forth, but currently they can't choose to stay on DST. I think WA, OR, and CA have all passed legislation that would move them over once the feds allow it.

Is there that much of a difference between owning a car and renting a car or using Zip or having a chauffer (Lyft, Uber, taxis) tote you around? I'd get rid of my car too if I could afford to have Uber haul me everywhere.

It's a difference in frequency of use. In Seattle, a lot of my friends don't have cars, but use Rideshare/rentals when they need it. If you are using it a couple times a week, pretty easy to stay under the cost of car ownership when you factor in insurance/parking/maintenance etc.

1.5-3 Million still feels like a lot, regardless of if it's my parents and their friends or if it is me or my friends.

Taking this comment on good faith, I'm just asking for my own edification. I've lived in Seattle, downtown adjacent, for 10+ years, and really love it, even with COVID, outside of the few weeks where we've had bad smoke. Obviously if half the year is going to be like this, I'm leaving regardless of the salary ramifications, but if we are talking a week or so every couple years, it might be a different story. I moved to Seattle to escape other problematic issues where I used to live, and I suspect the same is true for lots of folks.

$10M may be the monetary value used for these type of calculations, but when you look at our country's yearly budgets, it's clear that each live is valued much lower than $10M. Especially after seeing our response to Covid-19.

Before Covid my office was in Smith Tower in Seattle. My first week I sent a letter through the mail chute on our floor and was delighted when it showed up home a few days later. Smith Tower's are similar to the one shown in the picture of the Roosevelt hotel.

I can't bring myself to dine out because while I'm not as concerned for myself, I feel like the risk has to be pretty high to the waiters/bussers (prolonged interactions with dozens of people each day, and handling used dishes/silverware). I feel better about takeout currently since it cuts down on that.

I like my kindle for so many reasons, especially the screen which doesn't strain my eyes. But this is by far the biggest benefit over reading on my phone or a tablet.
