In my experience, CM directions in general are incomplete. Not that steps are (always) missing or the like, but sometimes they'll use an acronym or vague instruction that is simply a full-stop to someone that is new to it and just wants to try it.

Android mods like this are great ideas, but this and the other super popular mods could really use a person that takes the role of technical or documentation editor.

No seriously . . . A few years ago, i guess 06, all my jacked-in friends were making the move from myspace to facebook, and people i knew that were less jacked-in were registering. Everyone was on me like 5th grade cigarette smokers "dude it's cool, everyones doin it" but i never got around to regging. Never cared that much.

Today, those same people hate facebook. They're bored of it and they've finally had it. They've discovered that it's a time sink, the connectivity is largely worthless as well as hard to keep up with, and the negative publicity certainly doesn't help.

All of a sudden, the people that were calling me antisocial a couple years ago are now calling me prescient . . . that I somehow saw the whole thing coming. The truth? I just didn't care. Still don't. I've got about 8-10 people that I really care about in the world and i'd just as soon go over to their house and look at their dog for real. My son, otoh, has adopted a friend-removal doctrine... "When i get a notification for your birthday, if i wouldn't care enuf to actually call you and say 'happy birthday', then i'm removing you." Solid.

Anyway, I can't answer the question, but I can give an answer: It was cool at first, but now it's just too much of the same thing. all the features and crap that have been added, from what i've seen and heard, have cluttered up the interface. by contrast, when gmail adds features, they barely touch the core of the app and add things that make it easier to use the core of the app. Facebook could learn a thing or 2 about that.

Google = Diversify and Focus. A billion different apps that do one thing. cool. Facebook = Focus on diversity. One app that does a billion different things? not cool.

you forgot to say that you weren't intending to use it to replace your use of html, but for replacing your use of bbcode-likes.

his underlying point, and he as much as said it, is that bbcode IS successful because it WAS successful.

when it was born, it was convenient because it looked and acted like html while limiting the users ability fuck things up. at the same time it didn't go confusing the machine that was going to process it. it was clearly never designed for anything but bridging that gap... some 15+ years ago.

Flickr produces bbcode embeds, but imgur produces like 8 different embeds. existing adoption is not the sole mark of success for anything digital. facebook anyone?

the wysiwyg editors make it easier to generate "human usable code that limits fucking up". It matters because users can still fuck things up but for some reason they need to be able to read it.

THAT is why this type of thing should be used (on the developer level) as a replacement. It's easy to read, it's easy to grasp, it's consistent and it's no more difficult to parse (for erlang or haskell or php) at the server level than bbcode.

Is this training you're to attend or lead? It kinda sounds like traiining you're giving, but I'm not sure.

Even so, what I'm hearing is that a plan was made for you that did not include you in the decision-making process; that given a choice, you would have just said "how about a different w'end?" and everything would ahve been copacetic.

It's probably beyond time, but I would suggest talking to your boss, or the scheduler (whoever that may be) and see if you could work something out. You may be surprised.

Possible solution? Hack googles IT, change their preference of areas of the city to mine. Any takers? I've got a shiny Susan B. Anthony dollar for ya.

The word "debt" has a couple of unstated meanings to most people. These are things that nobody says out loud because it's not really coherent to the individual but everyone pretty much has the same corner reserved in their head specifically for the weight that true debt carries... if that makes sense.

I think people see "debt" as temporary but at the same time an ever-present, albeit low-level, responsibility. that it deserves a constant trickle of attention.

This is the wrong attitude to have towards technical debt. The avoidance of down-the-line refactoring anything should be as high of a priority as customer service. Keeping code clean, organized and documented allows the developer to deal with bugs and new features quickly. An ounce of prevention, right?

* If users are clamoring for a feature, they will wait another week for it to be built properly. (A well built feature will easily make up for impatient customers by not generating bugs or other problems) * A lot of us have this niggling "gottamovegottamovenotgoodenuf" vibe all the time. But just because you FEEL like you're losing ground doesn't mean you are. And if you ARE losing ground, it's too late for that one thing that's behind schedule to save you anyway... meaning that your problems are likely elsewhere.

not much of a Tweeterer, but lookin at the screens I'll say that you've probably hit on something. Gtalk is designed that way because it works.

VolScroll, tho . . . not sure about it. on my Gal S2, the vol buttons are really out of the way. I'll bet that the only time i'd use them with this app would be when i only could use one hand. even then, it's just as easy to hold with hand and thumb scroll...

And when's the only time you'd need 1-handed scrolling? Behind the wheel of the car. Neat idea, to be sure... just not sure if it's practical.

and "high quality" doesn't necessarily mean "successful". There's plenty of good apps (and cars and restaurants) that never make a dime, and plenty of absolute shit that can't seem to die fast enough.

You said "privacy and security" but for a personal email, there's a much bigger problem... spam.

It's been a couple years since i tried it, but I used <name>.tld for email like you're considering. I never received more than a few emails a day, but it was greatly outnumbered by spam. probably 100:1. gmail and Google Apps mail is the tits with spam. false positives (or negatives) are very rare on the order of 1 every month or 2... probanly 1:1000 emails.

If you use Google Apps for email, it syncs right in with android devices and is subject to the same security (good or bad) of gmail. Even if you're an experienced sysadmin (irrelevant of os) it will take an order of magnitude more time to setup and maintain the infrastructure than if you just use google.
