These guidelines are rarely followed anymore. I've been seeing/feeling negativity over here for a long enough time now. Don't know when, but I'll surely quit HN soon. It's like a habit that I have to get out of.

Except that Kindle isn't any of those. Neither fast, nor smooth. But that's a kool-aid you've been drinking for too long. And even believe that books should not come on the web and have their own native experience.
Also: hate,hate,hate page-flip animations - either they slow down the page transition, or they're there to obscure a too-slow page transition; either way they get in the way of the experience very quickly

Page-flips are an important experience of books, even iBooks has it! And I like it that way. I just checked on this one that transitions are close to 60fps. Agree with you on zoom-in part though, but then I'm reading it on my iPad so I don't need zooming so much.
They're possible because of the web, but they're also unnecessary because of the web.
I'm afraid that is not your decision to make. It is absolutely necessary and does good for the children to move beyond stuck up books that are locked in time and technology of 15 years ago.

No. For a neanderthal leadership it doesn't take months to recreate code. It usually takes forever.
Goldman Sachs and many such large corporation, including the US Government, are led by a bunch of dinosaurs. People who do not understand what code is.
What they understand instead is bullying, setting an example like some sort of public execution, owning people to the point of slavery etc. They know what it means to prosecute and destroy lives of individuals. And enjoy parties and drinks on the side in the evenings.
And this is just one example of that tyrannical trait.
I have this weird feeling that there has been some bad force working up against Firefox ever since they declared their all out war against user tracking (was anti ad-bearers).
I could be wrong but there are signs and absurd behavior like umpteen number of resignations at the top, Firefox Apps been published with strange love from private players like telefonica/others etc.

Choose whatever takes you to MVP the quickest. Avoid the #beliebers in the echochamber[like this one!]. Choose something that you're familiar with, and probably aren't immersed deep enough yet. So that there is still ground to cover. Usually there is always much to learn.
Focus must be on the MVP and not on the quality of the framework or the hipness of stack. Those things are unimportant until you're ready to hire. Once a bit more stable then play around. Contribute into the system. Push it forward. Avoid stagnation. Have beer. :)
I just feel helpless about this country. I go to these shopping malls and night clubs and see droves of people unconcerned or even aware about the apathy that this country has been fostering. We're no longer a role model of a democracy we enshrined in our pitch last century. Sometimes I feel we're no less bad than North Korea, except for the ton of money floating around that lets a section of people off the hook. Or political power.

No, it is not. Playback would get stuck, sound would go away for no rhyme or reason and what not. Better experience? - no - quite the opposite.
I got rid [1] of the native nuisance completely. And the experience of search, comment and history on native was simply terrible. Much lesser control on ad-blocking too, and really the ads on YT are sometimes seriously irritating.

In fact among the various options available for an off-planet settlement, I find an enclosed pressurized habitat on the Moon the most plausible one. At least our orbit around the Sun doesn't change when it comes to our Moon. And we have some experience visiting it too.
FWIW, it's not about saving the species or terraforming at this stage. It's about setting up more space-stations first - which in my opinion would become transit/rescue points for longer hauls and hops at some point in time. A station on Moon sounds like a better proposition than throwing buzzwords like terraforming or considering ourselves capable enough to prevent extinction level event on Earth at this stage. Even the dumbest startup ideas have to go step by step.
Have you also tested it inside of an iframe?
As far as I know support on Safari wasn't quite there yet. Last when I checked, and that was almost two months ago, Flex broke down pretty badly on iOS Safari, both on iPad and iPhone.

It's far more ridiculous to threaten and abuse our abject criminal system to reign in (that is if we assume the theft and not OSS happened) a talented employee who decided to jump the boat and join competition. Make no mistake, the people (wish their names were commonplace!) spearheading the legal pursuit on behalf of Goldman Sachs are evil - of the Hollywood/MPAA kind. Be wary of joining such Corporations, especially if you're a creative developer.

I guess it will be damn interesting to see how this pans out for Flipkart. FWIS, Flipkart is very unhappy that it wasn't allowed to control (yes control!) the market over web with its Airtel Zero plans. Read more about Net Neutrality [1] events in India lately.
Amazon India is certainly a serious threat to them. On a closed platform (like that of Android which is major in India) they probably have a lot more control and tracking (as someone mentioned it above). I guess it would make a lot of sense for FK to tap the naivete of Indian market and pull them all away from the web.

I'm a relatively older entrepreneur too, fall right on the right side of the median. Recently I had been been thinking of applying to YC. But couldn't convince myself for it, and my age was one of the reasons.
Kindle or on iPad Safari? I don't know about people in your vicinity but kids in my area are off Kindle completely. This is anecdotal evidence obviously.
The experience of reading books with lifeless text/images sounds like a retrogressive proposition to me. I think e-books will have to move up the tool chain, enter browser with alternative reading experiences.

I second your opinion on this one. More serious was the fact that Nandan Nilekani was far too keen on getting to the seat of prime minister/enter politics and much less interested in the outcome of the project. Broken karma, criminal wastage of taxpayers' money and a ton of vapor.
I don't use a single native app for news. Not even aggregators like Flipboard who wrap it up with fancy animations. For me and my friends it's web all the way.

Now this could be an early sign of a bubble in the making. Here's why:
1. The bay believes that solofounders are a bad deal - mostly - because starting a company is a lot of work. And so it is - a lot of work!
2. Now here we have a handful of _startups_ that confess there's isn't enough work to keep everyone in the nimble team up on toes for even forty hours a week! This contradicts with 1.
Sure it means team happiness and all that. Fine.
3. For each _startup_ that has confessed situation at 2. there should be at least 'X' times the number of start_ups who do not accept this reality. I don't know what that number 'X' would be but let's take it 10.

Lately I'd been bothered by poor quality experience and sometimes even spam requests on Skype. Hangouts was never my thing and Firefox Hello seems like a breath of fresh air just at the right time. Keep it up!
Besides I think iPad was something that Jobs envisioned when he was alive. He wanted, seriously wanted, to disrupt the education space with it. That's an important reason why he did not want porn to be easily available on the device [1] and why they had a large book-sized screen and not a mini to start with [2]. I think Jobs had a razor sharp focus back then.
After his demise, from what it seems, Tim Cook never felt for the iPad the same way as Jobs did. Tim is far more profit-centered than Jobs, and Apple's performance numbers lately speak for it. Unlike Steve, Tim Cook doesn't seem like a visionary either. He doesn't appear to have that urge of bringing change into the world.
He isn't of the type who has ability to bring that element of movement into his products. I could be wrong but it seems so. For example, he is unable to see the difference between the idea of revolutionizing education space and the idea of letting out a fashion accessory that competes well with swiss watches!
I mean you get the point, right?

Typically I'd expect memory intensive webGL processes to crash the browser (only), but here this threejs demo took down the whole operating system with it. Tried it on both iPhone and iPad Air with updated iOS 8.1.2.

This may be just my anguish but from where I stand and see things these tyrannical problems of our Government will only exacerbate, not subside. There is no reason for them to stop. Not until our citizenry becomes as powerful, empowered and weaponized as is the Government today.

But what's troubling here is the sensational heading[1] that CNN/reporter has chosen to bait traffic to this page. Turning it into some sort of a match between the two.
Is there not a legal action that could be taken against CNN for such poor quality reporting?
