Ive set my my oven to 125 - 175 degrees, then turn it off and put my phone, watch and even a PC in there to dry them out and dehumidify them for up to an hour. I then wait a day and then put them back to power. I’ve restored all non water proof devices this way so long as the battery doesn’t swell it seems to always work.

I almost never run the code locally unless I see something questionable and can’t reason about what it will do because I’m unfamiliar with something in it. For that, I tend to use a REPL for just the snippet of questionable code.

If you rely completely on third party vendors and don’t understand and know their TOS then you only have yourself to blame.

But calling Amazon a monopoly of the cloud is ridiculous. They could use A litany of other providers. Oracle, 1to1, Microsoft, linode, digital ocean, vulture. The list is almost endless.

Diversity of hosting is key to uptime and scaling.

Also, with a little bit of work, they could deploy open stack on their own servers in a matter of hours to days if they weren’t complete noobs.

For me, I just spent the last week trying the latest Distros.

I ended up with Linux Mint Cinnamon for one major reason. The rest all had weird issues with my Graphics on my ThinkPad P52 with has a Nvidia Q2000 Pro Mobile.

They all used the native Nvidia driver, but for some reason Linux Mint Cinnamon is the only one that works correctly with my Thunderbolt dock and two monitor setup.

As for usability, I found them all mostly the same though I did like the MATE's customizability a little more.

I'll give you my personal experience.

I miss using my Mac day-to-day since I started using Linux day-to-day at work. I still have a MacBook Pro, but I barely use it any more as I've tried to limit the amount of time on a computer outside of working hours.

I use Linux Mint with Cinnamon and for the most part, there is a lot of similarity. I use Guake for my drop down terminal like I have with iTerm2 and I use Chrome as my browser just because I've never bothered to transfer my stuff to Firefox.

But I do miss Safari. I truly find it better and faster. I use Bitwarden for password management and it works for both.

But for the most part, they are the same experiences. The true miss is the hardware, the battery life and the keyboard comfort of the MacBook.

I'm on my MacBook now and I get 8 plus hours on a single charge, I can type comfortable on a couch for hours and the trackpad just works perfectly so I never yearn for a mouse.

For work I have a ThinkPad P52 and the Linux support is lacking. Poor Power management allows me to get maybe 3-4 hours of battery, the trackpad sucks and needs a hack to work after kernel 5.4.26 for some reason, sound works but not well and the Nvidia driver sucks (official) glitches all over the place and waking from sleep requires a log out and log in to fix artifacts.

But in all honestly, I'm not sure what I would miss of linux if I only had a MacBook again. There just isn't anything I can do on Linux that I can't do on Mac, but there is plenty I can't do with Linux that I can with a Mac, simple things like airdrop and copy-paste sync with my iPhone, text messages on my laptop. I'm sure if I had an android I might regain some of those things, but it's just all so seamless on Mac OOTB.

I use docker and an Ubuntu image when I need linux to test things. Brew gives me access to almost every linux app I can think of and there is just a better amount of top quality paid and free app on the Mac in comparison to Linux.

Anyway, not sure any of that helps, but that's my 2 cents.

I agree. The Internet has become boring and yet I constantly am on things like HN hoping to find the diamond in the rough. Something that’s interesting.

Used to be, everyday there was at least 5 or more interesting stories that just got me excited about something new to try or learn.

Now, I’ve become so complacent with relying on sources like HN that I can’t find things on my own anymore.

Google does suck now. It’s mostly marketing.

Websites like Lifehacker used have fun information, now it just “hey buy this deal” shit.

Reddit sucks. I don’t find that fun at all, I miss digg.com but that sucks now too.

The Internet used to be full of fun things like diggnation. Even MySpace was better than Facebook.

I think everyone should watch it. I think there can be a lot of good done on a platform like Facebook, if it's goal wasn't to get you hooked. If it had real moderation of content.

The proliferation of fake and misleading information has clearly caused a lot of harm to the United States and I'm sure other countries as well.

I’m not sure what your talking about alt-` switches between app windows. The windows switcher is dreadful, it clumps all your windows in sorted and you can’t easily swap back and forth between two apps. On macOS, command tabbing nicely flips back and forth between the last used window. Windows never seems to make it easy to switch in my opinion.

This is awesome. I’ve been wishing for something like this on Windows!!
