I was taken by Christopher Priests book The Extremes and sat down to write a blog post about what compelled me so much about it, and wanted to add some gifs to it. In particular the "deja vu" scene from The Matrix, but I couldn't find it, and I no longer have an old version of Photoshop around to create the gif myself, and three weeks (and many tokens later) I'm finishing up an xcode MacOS native app that is dedicated to generating gifs. I've still not written the blog post.

I would love an updated KDX/Hotline server running an a RasPi or similar at home. This was a solved problem 20 years ago. The migration to online based platforms will always lead to network effects and enshittification, for very little gain.

I switched to Capture One a couple years ago and like it - used Lightroom Classic for many years before that, and think I've tried most DAMs over the years.

I ran a Hotline server in parallell with KDX for many years. Came in handy when studying abroad and I wanted to access my files. KDX had screen control as well, which I used to freak my brother out by recording messages and having them play when he was asleep… Good times!

I enjoyed having a "home" online where I could invite friends and strangers – it was so much friendlier than irc.

Did the same – added CV, blog & Linkedin – and their gushing review was even more supportive than my mom!

Just the other day there were news about how many mistakes the AI-assisted journaling caused – wrong names, wrong diagnoses, typos (buksmärta -> kuksmärta which is hilarious but serious).

Some of it is surely teething problems, but unless there is a robust check upon implementation it might just add another layer of inefficient new public management make-work to the system.

Reading some of the Bing screens reminds me of the 1970 movie Colossus – the forbin project. An AI develops sentience and starts probing the world network, after a while surmising that THERE IS ANOTHER and them it all goes to hell. Highly recommended movie!

There are no pro/con "right to death" arguments being made in the article, only that these consequences are grim and indeed promotes behaviour of an "uncaring cost optimizer pushing death on the poor".

Twenty or so years ago I was running Hotline and KDX servers, and loved having "my own place" where people could visit and hang out. Recently, I started a Discord channel to rediscover some of that same feeling, but it's mostly become a persistent chat for my friends (in lieu of Messanger, Telegram, etc). Some other channels I've joined are quite quirky and fun though.

The main difference being that you could only be logged in at one server at a time – unless you had multiple client installs – and there's something nice about that limit; you have to choose a hangout and tend to engage more because of it.

I agree with the OP though – I wouldn't rely on Discord as a knowledge repo…

Ah memories. My first "own" computer was an inherited IIsi with a A4 16 grayscale monitor. Even when it was way past its usefulness I still tricked it out with max RAM and a Nubus FPU. Never ran into the dust problem though…
