After some more research, I think what I might be looking at as one of the better options is KDE Plasma Bigscreen on an old CPU plugged in the HDMI since it's rumored that they are about to roll out a release fairly soon. This way I would have access to a browser (I guess) for streaming apps and also have YouTube with no ads. Other solutions all had some significant drawbacks it seems like or weren't fully implemented.

I think optimal system configuration takes more than a simple one page Google search. It builds upon the successes and failures of what curious people have already tried. anyway.

What I don't understand is what the actual hardware needed to run on a "regular" TV is. Do I need to buy a Raspberry Pi 4, connect via HDMI and cross my fingers that my TV remote will work with whatever open source TV software is out there? I am surprised that I can't find something more like a complete product for sale with software + dongle + remote.

More like horror movie ads show up for my toddler between watching Zoboomafoo and Little Bear, that was the last straw. I know there are other solutions for that particular problem like DNS ad blockers but I am ready to move on to a completely new and less tracky system.

Time to make the move over to linux and use Duplicati with Backblaze or any other bucket. You get the benefit of encrypted backups, have more control over what to back up, and will be notified upon failure.

It's like every new innovation at this point is exacerbating the problem of us choosing short term rewards over long time horizon rewards. The incentive structure simply doesn't support people who want to view things from the bird's eye view. Once you see game theory, you really can't unsee it.

that is correct the parents are meant to pass on morals and parent the child. If the parents fall through, there is the community such as church, neighbors, schools etc. The absolute last resort is government or law enforcement intervention, and this should be considered an extreme situation. But as John Adams noted, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people" -- in other words, all these laws start to rip at the seams when the fabric of society, the people who make up the society no longer have morals. But I appreciate this article in general, we need to fight against mass surveilance at all costs.
