I would also not suggest using the exact company name/URL in the email address used to sign up. One time I couldn't log in to my password manager service and after a _lot_ of back and forth it turned out that after some years my email was somehow scraped from their DB for using their domain name in my email... So now I always go with something obscure but still traceable back to the service it was used for.

Not if you let your email hoster spam filtering though? I've been doing that for ages and never had an issue with spam.

Couldn't you just setup a domain with an email hosting provider and then turn on catch-all for that domain? For me I can just use any email @my-domain and it will be forwarded to my actual email address.

I feel like I can one-up you on this. Here in Switzerland, the day after some popular shows in the US have ended (for example Breaking Bad, or a GoT season finale), some daily newspapers print two page spreads with all the spoilers from "last night's" episode - despite the fact that 100% of their readers are legally unable to watch that episode for probably another couple of months.

And even those that do follow the show through non-legal channels probably haven't downloaded the episode yet, since it has aired in the middle of the night for us.

Where I live (Zurich, Switzerland) it's not uncommon for shops/restaurants to open up their toilets to non-guests during busy events downtown, for a small charge. Most people don't mind paying a few bucks to use a clean toilet instead of the mobile ones provided by the city for free, which usually start smelling really bad only after a couple of hours.

I doubt I would use an app just for that though...

The main thing that's kept me from making a deposit with one of these services is the fact that I have to hand over a complete proof of my identity. Seeing how many of these services seem to get hacked lately I'd be too worried about somebody stealing my documents and a hacker getting ahold of these personal documents that could easily be used to impersonate me...

But on the other hand I also understand that these services have to be very careful so they don't get abused themselves.

I'm sure smart people could've come up with hundreds of ways to get around this new law if it would've been accepted. It would've probably turned into a cat-and-mouse game where the lawmakers would have to keep catching up to new loop holes found by corporations. This is most likely the reason this initiative failed. Most of the people I talked to here in Switzerland that voted against it said they like the idea in theory but it would be pointless to commission the government with trying to limit salaries.

Seeing how Switzerland isn't a member of the EU, I'd say don't get your hopes up anytime soon...

But they key to becoming a non-beginner are the first two bits, not the third. It's developing that filter experts have which separates relevant information from irrelevant information. Lots of beginners use Google in a backwards sort of way, having been trained to "look for the solution." It's not about memorization, then, it's about this compression algorithm we call "being an expert."

I think this goes pretty much for everything that you do using Google, not just programming. I do some on-site user support on the side, fixing end user PC problems. Most people watching me over my shoulders are usually shocked to see that I have to Google the solutions for most problems.

Once the shock wears off, they are actually fascinated by how I seem to be able to instantly filter between relevant and non-relevant content and search results. Some even tell me that they've Googled for hours for a problem that people who have this "filter" ability can probably find a solution for in under a minute...

Also interested, of course depending on the stack and if your project is "fun" enough. ;) Mail in profile...

I also didn't get it at first, but I am not a native English speaker. I think it's a play on the phrase "Enhance your penis" that is typical for spam emails trying to sell dubious medication.

Does anybody have another reading suggestion about growth hacking?

My small-ish personal website gets hammered everyday by bots trying to access obscure config files and installer scripts from various CMS I have never even heard about.

I think the chance of successfully obtaining DB credentials using this method is fairly high even without those "backup files" mentioned in the link.

I'd assume there are many people out there who can set up a simple CMS themself but ignore/don't understand how to properly remove the various "installer" and "configurator" scripts once they're done...

Looks cool, but the demo right at the top of the "examples" page has two things that IMHO aren't as "UX aware" as described on the landing page:

- The "website" field requires the http:// part of the address - After typing three letters into the "message" fieldarea, an error pops up and tells me the message needs to be at least 20 characters long, while I'm still typing away

I realize this could be tweaked by the user but the demo shouldn't have such logical flaws for a script that's described as "Super #UX focused". ;)

OS X has CMD+W which also can be used almost everywhere, including Sublime Text, to close a tab.

BUT it seems that this doesn't always work. I just tested with a newly created file and for some reason there was no warning, it just reloaded the file.

This also bothers me. It gets even worse when using a linter plugin. Sometimes when I open a complex file (for example a huge minified JS library), the whole editor will just crash because of the linter plugin. :/

No matter the reason, mixing different languages to name stuff in code and write comments in is bad practice in my opinion... Looking at the site's source they seem to be using both English and French. :/
