For those on k8s: quick reminder, unless you're in development mode your image pull policy should be IfNotPresent so you have at least some measure of caching to protect you from further degradation of service.

Beyond this, I'm updating things to use GCR so that if this bleeds into tomorrow my team's development timeline isn't impacted any further.

I've conducted many interviews hiring for a growing tech company pulling from a large pool of new hires (4 major universities) as well as a metro with software pedigree.

With younger developers (or fresh grads) its about their propensity to learn rather than anything they've learned to do before, chances of a fresh grad having previously worked on something that would move the needle in 3 months are slim.

Reviewing their profile: prior internships and/or limited work experience offer are openers for how they might operate in a workplace, how they crack open problems and how well they handle the 'I don't know how to do this scenarios' (of which there will be many).

I refuse to whiteboard, so for the technical aspect, probe the keywords mentioned in order to ascertain what they were really accountable for and what is simply fluff, paying close attention to how they articulate their work and its impact at the company.

The rewards of a well-mentored junior developer are tremendous, though very time consuming at the onset, so make sure whomever you pick is a good fit that you'll be happy to work with.

A blessed day, prior to this, json_decode would simply return null on error.

Hover states are no longer viable for interaction affordance because they do not exist on mobile.

I still include, however I always try and make interaction immediately apparent.

With the rise of single page applications there is immense demand for the rigor and form that seasoned back-end developers can bring to front-end teams.

Immense state trees, webworkers, asynchronous changes, tiered caching, pre-emptive fetching, modularization, optimistic rendering, validation, behavioral analytics, testing and more.

This is all without even getting started on actual presentational aspects.

The pace of the ecosystem in recent years and the immense amount of legacy code (10 years+) that doesn't scale to growing teams/projects is a problem everywhere you look.

The good news is companies looking to bring their front-end up to date are facing the same foreboding sense you have that comes with the unfamiliar.

Fragmentation is coalescing around major frameworks and fringe features from a few years ago are standards today.

It's not too late, understanding the tooling is critical (end-to-end IDE through to the browser and beyond) and will provide you with a solid basis. Follow this up by reading the APIs of major frameworks then pick one (any one, it doesn't matter) and build something with it.

I've used macrofab.com with great success.

Their end-to-end webapp is phenomenal and a great break when you finish a design for a client and the premium is just worth getting off your back.

This is a nifty tool that if anything helps the uninitiated visualize how all the parts fit together.

I live in Montreal where conditions for outdoor growing aren't favourable and the grow lights indoors bother me when they're out in the open.

So I'm using the spacebucket approach (with LEDs) to create contained spaces to grow strawberries and cherry tomatoes year round.

Yield isn't spectacular but its fun and trumps anything store bought. I have an upcoming design for microgreens using stacking 2-gal buckets.
