That's a big hope, considering the official response.

Did Ramses Martinez have the authority to pay people who found issues and instead sent tee shirts? Have people been paid in the past? If yes to both, the "no good deed goes unpunished" and "I'm new here so lay off" response is disingenuous. However, if there was no way Martinez could have paid bounties or no history of payouts, the grumpy response to not being showered with cash is unreasonable. (And perhaps Martinez, et al., already knew of this particular vulnerability.)

"Self taught" is an unhelpful distinction. It is the work itself that teaches. Helpful voices found in university programs, books, and boot camp courses may point you toward useful habits, but there are no shortcuts to experience. At day's end, everyone is self taught.

How strange.

Think about MySpace and Facebook. Often the first to market doesn't dominate a few years out. Figure out the problem you are solving and do it to the best of your ability. "Appropriate" your competitors' best ideas if they fit with your solution and ignore their bells and whistles if they don't. Even if you are not successful, there is no shame in failing well. Chalk it up to education and try again.

My coworker insists the email address was never validated and no one else ever logged in from this email address. After registering, the account came up with nearly 100 following and followers, none known by my coworker. The standard new user demo never happened. My coworker then changed the user name, and user profile information as a precaution. The actual owner of the account would likely now be able to login or re-register with their user name, but their followers would be gone.

This style of programming also goes by the name "code quilting". Part of the difficulty with moving this workflow method into the classroom is that it requires schools to redefine "cheating."

The time zone problem is indeed the cold water here. Even when folks are working remotely, it's faster and easier to work with people who have similar office hours. "Remote" could be a time zone over and worth an email. "Remote(India)", however, means project questions sit unanswered because I am asleep. If more information is needed to provide clarification, even a simple matter, normally settled in 60 minutes across roughly aligning time zones, can take 36 hours to work out.

Teaching is a catering gig. You must set out an assortment of foods and hope that the majority of the plate appeals to a palette that isn't your own. Children are finicky eaters. They lack the vocabulary and experience to tell you when a flavor isn't working for them. You have to puzzle out the situation, which oft times looks suspiciously like boredom or defiance, and seamlessly redirect to another dish. In many ways, adults are easier students. Cooking for someone excited about eating is a joy.

Start teaching by teaching. Approach your local [Parks and Rec Department, Adult Ed program, homeschool group, SBA/SCORE office, science museum] about offering a short intro class. Be modest in your proposal but be prepared to exceed the lessons outlined. You just don't know your student base yet. Different programs will bring in different kinds of people. Experience will allow you to dial in your favorite student type as well as your methods and materials before going independent. You may even keep these gigs as a steady source of new private students and cash. Try it out.

(As an aside: Six year olds are still learning basic grammar structures and logic. Many still need physical objects to perform basic math equations. Even those who appear to grasp abstract concepts are often "looking" at objects or example situations in their mind's eye. Programming is a stretch at this age. Isla succeeds because offers immediate and "tangible" feedback and works using a basic adjective-noun structure young children understand. Scratch is a steep step up from Isla. Probably age eight would be the soonest a typical child would enjoy playing with the language without an adult sitting next to them helping.)
