Yes, that is exactly what I do too. When I just started I treated code reviews as a way to show my knowledge and feel superior, which reflected the environment I was in. Once I moved to a new job with a jelled team and a positive sharing environment I noticed the use of questions in CR, and now it is my default mode.

TBH, early adopters have no problem giving their email for these kind of stuff. Even weirder is your conclusion that if you give someone your email he can spam your contacts, which he obviously can't.

I agree with everything, but there is that small point that if you don't want to be associated with people you worked with, it does fall into the "shady" category, at least somewhat. I'm sure you have a great reason, and that's why social constructs are much more complicated then whatever LinkedIn's system does and probably will ever do.

And to gf - I'm glad you agree on missing out on people, because some of the best people I know don't have an up-to-date profile, and I'd hate for them to work with people who update their profile too often :)

But SPAM is Google's problem and they are devoting a lot of resources to stopping it. Not to say it is exclusively Google's problem or Google's only/biggest problem.

Some people use Python as JS or PHP, why not also make it behave like that?

In reality, even if this is satire (which I believe it is) I'm sure if enough people will know about it, at least one of them will use it seriously.

Some places are more cunning. I've read reports of countries looking for stamps from the Taba border pass (a border between Israel and Egypt) and not letting someone in base on that (since if he passed through Taba he was either from Israel or going to Israel, even if the Israeli stamp was not in his passport).

First of all I agree with gf - the site does a horrendous job in explaining what it is. Add screenshot, actual content. People aren't looking for "simple", "familiar", etc. We're looking for what problem does this solve me with my contacts.

And oh I've got a few. First is that I contact people in different ways - phone, email, gtalk. I want it all unified in their card (Google does a meh job with this with their "linking" feature, but still misses obvious doubles). Not only that but I want a unified history - not a call log, not a message log. I want to see when I last contacted the person, not how.

Secondly - reminders. People need to be contacted sometimes. I need to call my mom later today, email a future client in a few hours etc. Not only that but as a good son I want to call my mom every day, unless she already called me. This is easy to check and to implement and I have no idea how it not standard. There is an Israeli android app called "Assistive" which kinda helps with this but not really enough. It basically sets reminders for missed calls. This needs to be taken further.

Just these two features will practically revolutionize the way I communicate with people, but I can keep on going on other things I want. You've chosen to do contact syncing which is a nice feature my phone already has for free.

Hi taganwald, I'm the one who outright called you a hypocrite. I hope you don't take it personally, that's just what I feel reading this. I'm a programmer because that's what I like doing, not because I think that this is the best way I can contribute to the world.

To be honest, even your last line doesn't impress me much. I've been told smoking is bad and I never smoked. I've also been told to go to university and work in a stable job. Not all advice from older people is applicable to everyone. I will not regret not being a doctor (or whatever you are advising) because I am happy and the world needs more happy people :)

So you think he is talking to that department at Google full of MDs? :)

Just to make sure I got the point across - the above joke was meant to say that people working in Google usually are also not sufficiently educated or academically positioned to pursue cures for diabetes. Being a programmer is not some aptitude test that means you can do anything. I'm a great programmer but I can barely watch House MD without cringing at the sight of innards or blood.

Is the author of this is currently working on curing diabetes? I think the chances are small he is. What I'm trying to say is that he is a hypocrite.

I was witness to the sending of a request for candidates with 3 years of Android experience to HR at 2011 at Intel. They just insisted that two or one isn't enough.

First Android phones were release at 2008.

In other news - I thank god I never were in as bad as interviews as some of you. My worst experience was the interviewer giving up and starting to ask me personal and professional stuff about another candidate to the same position. I guess I did a good job because the other candidate got it, company shutdown withing a year.

It's funny that you mention Babylon - I've talked to one of the devs who was in the core of developing their "toolbar" and it is essentially malware which hooks anything and everything possible in Windows and tries its best not to give up when being uninstalled.

Things like it and Conduit (another toolbar/malware company) are probably the biggest "botnets" out there, all "legal".

This is awesome. I really want to play with some AI lib and all of the ones I tried have way too many problems compiling on Windows. pip install them fails too. I don't want to spend time compiling libraries.

This one just worked. This is the Python way.

I plsy way too many computer games, and I got stuck too. It is really non-trivial to design a self explaining game, and they definitely failed. Unfortunately. The idea itself is pretty nice and all.

You might be right about my moral and ideological grounds, but who are you to say effectiveness is what matters?

Effectiveness without morality and ideology is just Sociopathism. To quote an old saying "The trains always ran on time during the Nazi regime".

I have a sublist of that, that I built over the last ~year of hacking on web projects. One of my biggest to dos in each project is automate stuff like validating. I still haven't really found a good way so I either go to w3c and check everything once in a while or I just don't. Usually I just don't.

This to me is like a checklist of things to automate. Is there any "build" system for the web?

I remember a time where "donation" wasn't a synonym to "pay for a job I did for free". The teachers offer their valuable time and knowledge, they shouldn't ask for "donation", they should ask for rightful pay for their time and the amount of value they create their students.

I'm sure that Starcraft 2 is still a commercial success. It might not have made as much as WoW yet, but as expansions come out it will definitely is going to make a lot of money. I'm sure they'll also experiment with different monetization models like they are with Diablo 3.

  1. Multiplication (2 * 4 = 8)

  2. Power of (2**4 = 16)

  3. *args and **kargs in functions definitions and function calls.

  4. Imports (import * from blah).
Did I miss anything?

You asked for a study. I gave you one. I guess that any study worth its time has criticisms and some that don't. Evolution is also criticized. I'm not comparing or equating them, just reminding you a criticism doesn't mean something is not right. Now I did read that wiki section and it is pretty short for such a "controversial" study.

First let me just say that my opinion is that I don't think there is anyone on this earth who knows for sure exactly what red meat does to humans and whether it is good or bad. I choose to believe the study for now.

Now I can start rationalizing why, and reputing Denise's reputings. Unfortunately I don't have time for this. I wish I could spend all my time talking about red meat (I don't) but I can't.

As a side note/joke - Denise is 25. I'm 25. I don't recommend anyone take any health advice from 25 year olds :)
