Well, you should send this ‘yeah, I can bring my personal laptop while my machine gets set up - when will my company issued device be available?’ Oh and yeah, bring a comically old laptop running an obscure Linux distro. DSL would be best.

I'm a full-stack product engineer who's been coding since 2017, and uses all the latest in AI-tooling to accelerate my output. You can find my Github at https://github.com/mikhael28 to see some of my open-source work & personal projects. My portfolio website has my resume, and some visual examples of the personal projects mentioned as well as my emerging blog at https://michaelnightingale.dev

Something I built last month in February: https://10xcardgame.com - a multiplayer card game for software engineers, inspired by Magic the Gathering, to help engineers bone up on their DSA knowledge. Full streaming netcode & WebRTC-enabled chatrooms self-hosted on my Rasberry Pi, where my OpenClaw agent hangs out as well.

Crazy to hear how much spam & straight up liars are applying nowadays. Not being able to pass a technical interview is one thing, but sending a fake resume and then expecting to not be exposed as a fraud is just crazy, sociopath behavior.

Maybe a startup could work on this problem - HN has two moderators, I’m not sure it’s realistic to ask them to track more than what they already do. How would they even track and verify such hearsay anyway?

Fantastic! A great proof of concept on Linux - lots of AAA gaming is already possible on Mac with Crossover and/or Parallels or VMWare Personal, which is free! While I have a Steam Deck, gaming on Mac works for me - I refuse to play Baldurs Gate 3 on a controller.

Yeah, huge mistake. I see way too many people casually addicted to wasting their money and burning it for no good reason. I enjoy playing fantasy football, but gambling on it is a sad use of your hard earned money that will only impoverish people and keep them working for the man.

I made a non-serious, sarcastic and parodious comment in a serious thread. My bad guys!

I just think non-competes are bad for employees though - if someone sells trade secrets, that can be somewhat obvious, and can be pursued legally without non-competes. It just creates an environment that keeps people down at the benefit of the powerful.

lol I was trying to be sarcastic, came off as bitter?

I’m not even looking for a job, I’m traveling the world and living my best life. I think my comment was more about how non-competes encourage toxic ideas of what loyalty you, as a free agent, are supposed to offer people who are fundamentally just paying you some money while they don’t reciprocate. Not that I’ve had this experience myself, just something I’ve seen others go through. I’ve had nothing but great employers for the most part.

As long as Zuck keeps releasing open-source models, the moat will continue to disappear from these companies. Only expensive, corporate processing tiers will exist and everyone will run stuff locally. Not a lot of money to be made from local processing.

It’s insane behavior like this that is why we didn’t discover electricity for five thousand years of civilization. Scammers ruthlessly exploiting people, and people uncritically accepting the exploitation. Then, one day, the truth is revealed, but it’s too late.

Online Dating 2 years ago

Why hasn’t anyone thought about making dating apps seasonal? The problem with all dating apps, is that after a certain point they become a cesspool of the dissatisfied customers who never paired off.

Does anyone remember when Tinder first came out? It was lit. 12 months later, it was not. The season passed. It became a familiar place, with baggage, where all the cool people left.

Solution: make a seasonal dating app that starts in March, and continues until August/September a.k.a cuffing season. Then, close it down until the next year. Each year, or season, it can have a different theme. You purchase a subscription for the whole season, a half year membership.

It starts all over again next year, with a different theme. This keeps the experience fresh, and viral for new people to join. Solves the reverse network effect problem, by creating a new, temporary network effect. It also harnesses natural human seasonal mating cycles in an intuitive way, while keeping everything fresh. The six month break in development allows for new UI and ‘fresh’ experience, like a Fortnite season.

I’m not going to lie, this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Why should anyone take spiritual advice from something that literally has no soul? It’s like taking advice on how to shoot a basketball from someone with no hands.

Sounds demonic. 0/10, would not recommend.

Eye color is a trivial phenotypical variation that has nothing to do with anything. Like programming languages.

A woman’s biology, by nature of being physically weaker, is a relevant distinction in the context of violence, where physical strength is relevant.

I suppose if someone says ‘In America, the average black family has 25% of the wealth of a white family’ faulty logic might say ‘why leave out the fact that the average white family has 50% of the wealth of an Asian family?’

So, what - the plight of the average white family is the same as the average black family? No, it’s not - so it’s reasonable to discuss that plight in a separate context.

It is in China. They don’t have an organic drip drip of failure. It’s all closely coordinated - it would be weirder if they have one or two fail, then next week 4, then 5 the week after.

It would be a huge surprise to see a major correction.

Well, that's a very nuanced and mature view of things, but for most people culture war means 'they different than me - no like!'. Very tribal, usually built around team blue vs team red. Cliches, stereotypes and tropes.

I think the concept you have expressed is simply the struggle for individual rights writ large. The struggle for a man to move through society by his rules, instead of being controlled by his parents, government or religion. Which, until the last few hundred years in certain parts of the world, has not been remotely possible.
