He may have been pulling your leg. We bottle feed the calves formula, because to allow the calves to drink the milk would defeat the purpose of raising dairy cows. Also teat cleanliness and health is huge; suckling causes problems. Incidentally, wild cows actually are a thing in a bunch of far-flung places. I saw them in the Aleutian islands (some genius brought them up there thinking he could get a beef business going and just left them when it of course failed) and they're mean as hell. There's a bunch of feral cattle on the Big Island of Hawaii as well, and TIL there are ~5 million stray cows in India where it illegal to kill them for religious reasons, which creates a massive problem for transport infrastructure, and gave rise to possibly my all-time favorite wikipedia article title:

I routinely take a suburban or regional bus to and from O'Hare. It's way better than driving/parking and a Lyft from the suburbs automatically costs at least 50$, and I don't really give a damn about easy car access since I don't have one anyway. Incidentally, most American airports where I've ever looked do have decent bus service with or without a rail transit system, you just have to look/ask for it.

The idea in medieval Germany is that when farm yields were low, they were looking to reduce the number of mouths to feed and post-childbearing women were deemed sufficiently 'worthless'. It also could be that during these times they were eating moldy grain they otherwise wouldn't, and the mold may have been ergot, with potent psychedelic/hallucinogenic properties (it's LSD, basically).

To reply to your question: the mayor and city council (which is a group of humans, a species which is famously given to disagreement between individual members) of San Francisco have some power to improve the situation, but even they have precious few examples of cities to have attracted and generated tremendous wealth without also having tremendous poverty and depravity, frequently sited literally across the street from said wealth. What US cities have done so humanely?

This was absolutely his choice. Another point you have (unintentionally?) brought up is the dignified resignation option. While it is often a naive, self-serving gesture, we can reasonably imagine that the Defense Secretary publicly resigning over opposition to a war during the public consideration of that war, might have had some effect on whether that war was started. I want to like him too, with his grandfatherly demeanor and genuine funnyness ("My god, were there so many vases?!") but, come on.

SnapOn hasn't been mentioned! 4 billion USD, 12,000 employees (mostly union), 100% US made. They sell direct to consumers now (they used to only service whole plants/shops). Originating in my neck of the woods - Kenosha & northern IL - their tools are held in high regard everywhere I've gone and jobs there are highly sought after. To call Craftsman an 'American' tool company is a stretch(Made in US "with Global Materials"), and from what I can tell, they're only the largest when you add in their sister subsidiaries (deWalt, Stanley, BOSTITCH).

In this usage, salt is anything but lacking. Americans do know what cheddar actually is and indeed make a shitload of it in a wide range of qualities. Tillamook out of Oregon and Cabot out of Vermont are commonly available and pretty good.
It's processed (not aged), high fat, low protein cheese. Invented by James L Kraft (yes, that Kraft) and is the basis of Kraft Mac & Cheese, elsewehere called Kraft dinner. It melts perfectly and is shelf-stable. Fun fact: for a time it was called Government cheese. USDA used to buy surplus milk in glut years to stabilize prices, mass produce this cheese product, and give it out as part of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/'food stamps'). The phrase 'government cheese' became a pseudonym for welfare and uttered by ('compassionate') conservative types to belittle the food insecure, so they rebranded it and voila! Now it's 'merican!
Just speculating, but -enau is a common town name ending in German, a person from that place might be name -enauer (see Adenauer). There is a Gudenau Castle in west Germany. Gudenauer would have been an excellent candidate for Ellis Island-fication
I just spent several weeks in Germany, one of my goals was family history (my father was born in Dusseldorf, his father in Berlin), that whole side is dead now, basically. I had a much easier time in the west (my grandma's birthplace) than in the east, much of which was apparently due to war damage. It also turns out that my naive notion of just walking into the national archives and putting my grimy American fingers all over their paper records was objectionable to the Germans. But at least I made contacts, the archivist basically takes a fee and get back to you in a few months' time.
